Abstract: winter dysentery (wd) is a seasonal infectious disease described worldwide that causes a marked decrease in milk production in dairy cows. in the northern hemisphere, where the disease is classically recognized, bovine coronavirus (bcov) has been assigned as a major etiologic agent of the disease. nonetheless, in the southern hemisphere, an in-deep etiological survey on wd cases had not been carried out. this study aimed to survey for bcov by nested-rt-pcr, rotavirus by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (page) and elisa, bacteria by classical bacteriological methods and pcr for virulence factors and parasites by sugar flotation test on fecal samples of 21 cows from a farm during an outbreak of wd in s?o paulo state, southeastern brazil. bcov was detected in all 21 samples, while rotavirus was detected in two symptomatic cows. escherichia coli, yersinia intermedia, providencia rustigianii proteus penneri, klebsiella terrigena and enterobacter aglomerans were detected in samples from both asymptomatic and healthy cows in different associations. the study of e. coli virulence factors revealed that the strains isolated were all apathogenic. cysts of eimeria sp. and eggs of strongyloidea were detected at low numbers in four of the symptomatic cows, with one co-infestation. these results suggest bcov as the main etiologic agent of the cases of wd in brazil, a conclusion that, with the clinical and epidemiological patterns of the disease studied herein, match those already described elsewhere. these findings give basis to the development of preventive measures and contribute to the understanding of the etiology of wd.
Diagnóstico diferencial de la tortura en restos esqueletizados: presentación de tres casos
Cuadernos de Medicina Forense , 2008, DOI: 10.4321/S1135-76062008000300009
Abstract: while the diagnosis of torture has been primarily concentrated in the examination of living victims and cadavers, little or no work has been undertaken in skeletonised remains. this paper discusses the role of non-accidental toracic trauma as an indicator of inflicted lesions with the aim of incapacitating but not killing certain victims of human rights violations. in order to illustrate differential diagnosis of injuries attributable to "torture" as well as other mechanisms three cases are presented in which could be attributed to torture and one is an exclusion of that scenario and is more consistent with a road traffic accident.

Check list of the mammals of Tussen-die-Riviere Provincial Nature Reserve, Free State Province, South Africa
J.P. Watson
Koedoe : African Protected Area Conservation and Science , 2006, DOI: 10.4102/koedoe.v49i1.108
Abstract: Tussen-die-Riviere Nature Reserve falls within the Eastern Mixed Nama-Karoo Biome. The surface area is approximately 23 000 ha and it is located in a summer rainfall region. Sixty six different mammal species were recorded for the reserve over the past 13 years which constitutes 65 % of the indigenous mammals recorded for the Free State Province. The highest number of species for the rodents and insectivores were recorded in riverine habitat but the highest abundance were recorded in rocky habitat and was constituted by only one species, Aethomys namaquensis.

Moderne (finansi le) slawerny
J.P. Fouché
Koers : Bulletin for Christian Scholarship , 2009, DOI: 10.4102/koers.v74i1&2.120
Abstract: Modern (financial) slavery There is probably no single person who has not been affected by the current international financial crisis. In order to understand what has happened, the reasons for the credit – and extended financial crisis are analysed and related to slavery. This article provides an international perspective, but also gives the South African perspective. From the article, it seems that the same factors that motivated people to apply slavery, today also motivate large corporations and individuals to keep hostage a large number of people in a spiral of increased consumerism. The consumer spending is financed by paying people more for their spare time and people taking up more credit. From the relentless way in which credit is being advertised, it seems that there is very little respect or care for the well-being of those trapped in debt. The prospects of ending the financial slavery are discussed and some recommendations are made regarding dealing with debt. The article closes with a call on the church to enter into the debate.
’n Voorstel vir ’n tipologie van die geloofwetenskapdebat

Koers : Bulletin for Christian Scholarship , 2004, DOI: 10.4102/koers.v69i3.310
Abstract: A suggested typology of the faith-science debate In this article a typology of the faith-science debate is proposed by identifying four possible points of entry into the debate. The ontological, epistemological, hermeneutical and ethical angles of the debate are then consecutively discussed. The ontological angle focuses on the assumptions of reality as inherent in the approaches of faith and science respectively. The epistemological angle is concerned with the differences and similarities in the methods followed by faith and science to obtain knowledge of what exists. The hermeneutical angle in turn deals with the strategies that faith and science employ to interpret experience. The ethical angle focuses on ethical issues characteristic of faith and science, as well as ethical judgements on various issues, respectively from the fields of faith and science. With regard to the four mentioned points of entry into the debate, a possible reductionist as well as a possible non-reductionist position is identified and discussed.
