Abstract: the relationships between environmental exposure to risk agents and health conditions have been studied with the aid of remote sensing imagery, a tool particularly useful in the study of vegetation cover. this study aims to evaluate the influence of environmental variables on the spatial distribution of the abundance of lutzomyia longipalpis and the reported canine and human visceral leishmaniasis (vl) cases at an urban area of campo grande, state of mato grosso do sul. the sandfly captures were performed in 13 residences that were selected by raffle considering four residences or collection station for buffer. these buffers were generated from the central house with about 50, 100 and 200 m from it in an endemic area of vl. the abundance of sandflies and human and canine cases were georreferenced using the gis software pci geomatica. the normalized difference vegetation index (ndvi) and percentage of land covered by vegetation were the environmental variables extracted from a remote sensing ikonos-2 image. the average ndvi was considered as the complexity of habitat and the standard deviation as the heterogeneity of habitat. one thousand three hundred sixty-seven specimens were collected during the catch. we found a significant positive linear correlation between the abundance of sandflies and the percentage of vegetation cover and average ndvi. however, there was no significant association between habitat heterogeneity and the abundance of these flies.

Abstract: the experiment was carried in commercial vineyard of cultivar ruby, located in the region northwest of s?o paulo state. had as objective, evaluating the effect of ethephon, applied before the pruning the production, in the percentage of defoliation, time of accomplishment of the pruning, shooting of the branches, production of the grapevine, tempt to reduce costs improving the productivity and the quality. it was concluded that the 7500 ppm the ethephon application, 20 days before the pruning, it was the treatment provide larger percentage of it defoliates, smaller time of accomplishment of the pruning, larger percentage of sprouted bud and larger production.

Abstract: this study aimed to describe phlebitis, infiltration and extravasation events in newborn infants hospitalized at the neonatal intensive care unit of a public maternity in rio de janeiro, brazil. a quantitative and descriptive study was carried out, involving 36 newborns under intravenous therapy and indicated for the removal of the peripheral intravenous device. fifty puncture sites were assessed immediately after the peripheral catheter removal, resulting in an average 1.40 punctures per infant. complications were responsible for 48% of catheter removals before discharge from treatment, predominantly infiltration (79.2%), followed by phlebitis (16.7%) and extravasation (4.2%). to avoid aggravations and enhance the security of newborns submitted to intravenous therapy, the nursing team should periodically assess the peripheral venous access and gain knowledge on interventions needed when signs of complications are detected.
Experimental american trypanomiasis in rats: sympathetic denervation, parasitism and inflammatory process
Machado, Concei??o R. S.;Ribeiro, Antonio L. P.;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 1989, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02761989000400013
Abstract: tissue parasitism, inflammatory process (histologic methods) and sympathetic denervation (glyoxylic acid-induced histofluorescence for demonstration of catecholamines) were studied in the heart (atrium and verntricle) and the submandibular gland of rats infected with the y strain of trypanosoma cruzi. in the heart paralleling intense parasitism and inflammatory process, the sympathetic denervation started at day 6 of infection and at the end of the acute phase (day 20) practically no varicose nerve terminals were found in both myocardium and vessels. in the submandibular gland, in spite of the rarity of anastigote pseudocysts and the scarcity of inflammatory foci, slight to moderate (days 13-15 of infection) or moderate to severe denervation (day 20) was found. at day 120 of infection both organs exhibited normal pattern of sympathetic innervation and only the heart showed some inflammatory foci and rare psudocysts (ventricle). our data suggest the involvement of circulating factors in the sympathetic denervation phenomena but indicate that local inflammatory process is, at least, an aggravating factor.

Bejarano frente a la política comercial agropecuaria Bejarano's thoughts on commercial agricultural policy
This article analyzes the development of Jesus A. Bejarano's thoughts on the commercial agricultural policy. For this purpose, the author examines Bejarano's writings at the beginnings of the opening up of agriculture in the very early nineties, the papers he produced during the middle of the decade, and the influence he may have had on SAC's thinking. This work shows that although Bejarano strongly departed from the simplistic opinion of those who believe that the restructuring of agriculture is best left solely to market forces, nevertheless he did not favor a radical protectionist policy. On the contrary, he supported a transitional, gradual, long-term policy that would generate efficiency and competitiveness, and he was little inclined in encouraging income policies favoring specific agricultural groups.
