Abstract:
Report on the conference on 'Men, Women, and Medicine: A New View of the Biology of Sex/Gender Differences and Aging' held in Berlin, 24–26th February 2006
Antje Kampf
Philosophy, Ethics, and Humanities in Medicine , 2006, DOI: 10.1186/1747-5341-1-11
Abstract: This three-day conference, the first world-wide symposium on the topic of gender-specific medicine, attracted a wide range of distinguished researchers and clinicians. The focus of the Conference was to report on the latest research on sex and/or gender difference and its impact on physiological function, treatment procedure and patient outcomes. The presentations ranged beyond the topic of reproduction – the most obvious field of sex difference – to encompass the entire human organism, with the scheduled 92 papers and 98 poster presentations covering diverse medical sub-specialities. Individual papers can be accessed as abstracts in the journal Gender & Medicine, 3, Supplement A, 2006, or on the website [1]. This report focuses on three issues that emerged during the Conference: gender mainstreaming, concepts of sex and gender difference, and men's health. The concept of gender mainstreaming was originally established by OSAGI in 1997, and was later also adopted by the WHO. Gender mainstreaming calls for equitable attention to male and female examples in clinical research, treatment, education, and indeed the whole health care system. It aims to ensure recognition and understanding of gender in social policy processes, and thereby counteract gender inequality [2]. Gender mainstreaming has been widely discussed, particularly by experts in health policy, and the literature is considerable. For a critical overview of the concept and implementation of gender mainstreaming, see, for example [3]. The purpose of gender-specific medicine is to achieve these goals – in addition to real benefits to patient care. Yet gender-specific medicine is still used as a euphemism for women's health alone, and the distinct concepts of sex and gender are often not accepted as scientific categories in medical research and practice, despite their substantial relevance [4]. Nevertheless, the array of newly-emerging research, and the range of the papers presented at this conference, indicates
Imaging in cochlear implant patients []
Aschendorff, Antje
GMS Current Topics in Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery , 2012, DOI: 10.3205/cto000080
Abstract: [english] Imaging procedures are a mainstream tool in the daily ENT workflow. Cochlear Implant patients are representing a special population with specific demands for imaging. There are different imaging techniques available for pre-operative evaluation, surgery and postoperative controls with different indications and consequences. High-resolution computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are mainly used in the evaluation process. New procedures, as digital volume tomography, are increasingly used intra- and postoperatively. Especially the intracochlear positioning in malformations of the inner ear, eventually added with radiological assisted navigation, can be considered a standard of modern cochlear implant surgery. In addition, digital volume tomography may serve as a quality control tool focusing on the evaluation of the intracochlear electrode position. The range of applications, indications and current results are illustrated.

Sprach(wissenschaft)liche Kulturen. Pl doyer für eine linguistische Partizipation an einem konstruktivistisch begründeten, kulturwissenschaftlichen Projekt transdisziplin rer Forschung am Beispiel der Interkulturellen Kommunikation
Hornscheidt, Antje
Linguistik Online , 2003,
Abstract: In my article I take a constructivist perspective as a starting point. Giving some introductory remarks on the role of language and the constitution of meaning within a constructivist framework, the article discusses the role and relevance of Critical Discourse Analysis and Cognitive Linguistics within this frame for cultural studies. It is argued that a transdisciplinary approach is most valuable for a research taking the importance of linguistic processes for cultural analysis into account. Following especially Fauconnier (1999) and Verschueren (1999), the importance of a pragmatic and cognitive-linguistic approach to language is underlined. To exemplify the consequences that a transdisciplinary approach could have, the article focuses on the way intercultural communication has been conceptualized within linguistics so far. The critical analysis of traditional research on and conceptualization of intercultural communication shows, how a constructivist perspective can widen the scope of linguistic research.

Der westliche Blick auf den Orient The Western Gaze on the Orient
Antje Schrupp
querelles-net , 2007,
In the face of current debates on the subject of Islam, Christina von Braun and Bettina Mathes point to the centuries-old history of interpreting the orient from the western perspective. The material-rich volume sketches the historical and geographical diversity of the phenomenon of “Islam,” showing how the western world has long taken for granted their projection of an image of the occidental orient and how these images persist, even where they might be least expected.
Rezeptionsgeschichte jugendbewegter Frauen zwischen Antifeminismus und Emanzipation Reception History of Women in Youth Movements Between Antifeminism and Emancipation
Antje Harms
querelles-net , 2007,
In her MA thesis, published in 2006, Christiana Kliemannel follows the traces of women and girls in youth movements between the years of 1912 and 2003. While doing so, she examines the historical context in which these women found themselves according to which key concepts and gender constructs were used to criticize the youth movement.
