Luz Jr, Geraldo E.;Melo, Ana C. R.;Lima, Stevie H.;Araujo, Antnio S.;Fernandes Jr., Valter J.;
Química Nova , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-40422010000800005
Abstract: la-incorporated sba-15 mesopourous molecular sieves (lasba-15) were directly synthesized with aim to convert ethanol to ethylene. the samples were characterized by xrd, xrf, nitrogen sorption and acidity, by thermodesorption of n-buthylamine. the results have indicated that all the samples have showed high ordered mesostructure with a large average pore size, and that the lanthanum incorporation has caused an increase in the acidity of the sba-15. the lasba-15 samples have improved, with low deactivation rate, the conversion of the ethanol to water, ether, acetaldehyde and ethylene. in addition, they have increased the ethylene selectivity.
A comunidade cívica em Walter e Putnam
Fernandes, Antnio Sérgio Araújo;
Lua Nova: Revista de Cultura e Política , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-64452000000300006
Abstract: the article contrasts two conceptions of civic community: michael walzer's and robert putnam's. it is argued that walzer's republicanism remains heavily influenced by civic humanism and its view of social unity as founded on a specific conception of the good life (that is, the life of the active and virtuous citizen). in contrast, putnam's empirical researches on "social capital" derive inspiration from tocqueville's more pluralistic and liberal conception of republicanism.

Abstract: four feeding schedule were investigated for broiler breeders: at 6:30 am; 50% feeding at 6:30 am and 50% at 3:30 pm (dual); at 11:00 am, and at 3:30 pm. arbor acres breeders were randomly assigned to 48 boxes, with 12 replicates of 27 females and three males each. the nutritional levels and management procedures were those recommended for strain. the variables studied were: total egg production, nest, clean and broken egg production, in six collections (6:30 am, 9:00 am, 11:00 am, 1:30 pm, 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm); egg weight and egg specific gravity, grouped in three collections (9:00 am, 1:30 pm and 5:30 pm). analysis of variance was used. means were compared using student t test for traits and collection and polynomial regression analysis for age. the collection and feeding schedule effects were significant for all traits, except for broken eggs, in which feeding schedule was not significant. the maximum egg production was obtained at 9:00 am for feeding schedule at 6:30 am (22.78 ± 0.36%) and dual (20.26 ± 0.33%), and at 1:30 pm for feeding schedule at 11:00 am (20.35 ± 0.39%) and at 3:30 pm (19.25 ± 0.38%). female broiler breeders under the dual and at 3:30 pm feeding schedule showed egg weight of 71.0 ± 0.3 g, which was at least equal to the other feeding schedule in any collection. the egg specific gravity for feeding schedule at 11:00 am (1.0788 ± 2) and 3:30 pm (1.0799 ± 2) were higher than the other feeding schedule. eggs from older female broiler breeders and eggs collected in the first hours of the day were heavier and had thinner eggshell than those from younger females and eggs collected later in the day. the dual feeding schedule could be an alternative to feeding schedule at 6:30.

Comparative and Functional Genomics , 2005, DOI: 10.1002/cfg.473
Abstract: The cadherin superfamily is a diverse and multifunctional group of proteins with extensive representation across genomes of phylogenetically distant species that is involved in cell–cell communication and adhesion. The mosquito Anopheles gambiae is an emerging model organism for the study of innate immunity and host–pathogen interactions, where the malaria parasite induces a profound rearrangement of the actin cytoskeleton at critical stages of infection. We have used bioinformatics tools to retrieve present sequence knowledge about the complete repertoire of cadherins in A. gambiae and compared it to that of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. In A. gambiae, we have identified 43 genes coding for cadherin extracellular domains that were re-annotated to 38 genes and represent an expansion of this gene family in comparison to other invertebrate organisms. The majority of Drosophila cadherins show a 1 : 1 Anopheles orthologue, but we have observed a remarkable expansion in some groups in A. gambiae, such as N-cadherins, that were recently shown to have a role in the olfactory system of the fruit fly. In vivo dsRNA silencing of overrepresented genes in A. gambiae and other genes showing expression at critical tissues for parasite infection will likely advance our understanding of the problems of host preference and host𕢓pathogen interactions in this mosquito species.

Abreu, Rone Antnio Alves de;Speranzini, Manlio B.;Fernandes, Luís C.;Matos, Delcio;
Acta Cirurgica Brasileira , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-86502006000500002
Abstract: purpose: to verify prospectively the practicability of performing loop colostomy closure under local anesthesia and sedation. methods: in this study, 21 patients underwent this operation. lidocaine 2% and bupivacaine 0.5% were utilized. pain was evaluated during the operation, on the first postoperative day and at hospital discharge. intraoperative events, postoperative complications and the acceptability of this procedure were analyzed. results: the mean duration of the operation was 133 minutes (range: 85 to 290 minutes). the mean postoperative hospitalization was four days (range: one to twelve days). no patients died. complications occurred in two patients (9.4%): abdominal wall hematoma and operative wound infection. with regard to pain severity, scores of less than or equal to three were indicated in the intraoperative evaluation by 80% of the patients (17/21) and on the first postoperative day by 85% (18/21). at hospital discharge, 95.2% of the patients (20/21) said they were in favor of the local anesthesia technique. conclusion: loop colostomy closure under local anesthesia and sedation is feasible, safe and acceptable to patients.

Revista Brasileira de Ciências Farmacêuticas , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-93322004000300010
Abstract: ointments containing paromomycin (pa) have been used for topical treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis. although influence of the vehicle on skin permeation is crucial for optimization of formulations containing pa, this aspect has not been investigated experimentally. in this study, we have evaluated the influence of the formulation type [oil-in-water (o/w), water-in-oil-in-water (w/o/w) emulsions and ointment] on in vitro release and skin permeation of pa and experiments were carried out on cellulose acetate membrane and skin biopsies from hairless mice, respectively. pa release from o/w emulsion (51.7% ± 0.9 of dose applied) was faster than that observed for w/o/w emulsion (3.0% ± 0.5). pa absorption from o/w emulsion (87.1% ± 3.9) through stripped skin was 5 to 6 times higher than that observed for w/o/w multiple emulsion (14.7% ± 0.5) and ointment (16.6% ± 0.1). pa permeation through intact (normal) skin was negligible for all tested formulations. skin uptake from o/w emulsion (0.9% ± 0.1) was greater than that observed for w/o/w multiple emulsion (0.3% ± 0.1) and ointment (0.1% ± 0.1). these results suggest that a hydrophilic vehicle (o/w emulsion) could be an interesting alternative to improve topical delivery of pa.

Bhering, Maria Carmen;Dias, Denise Cunha Fernandes S.;Tokuhisa, Dai;Dias, Luiz Antnio dos Santos;
Revista Brasileira de Sementes , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-31222004000100019
Abstract: the objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of the controlled deterioration test for the evaluation of melon seed vigor. four seed lots of the golden mine hybrid with two moisture content levels (20 and 24%) were submitted to controlled deterioration, at 45o c, for 24 and 48 hours. the results were related to germination, first count, cool germination, seedling emergence and seedling length tests. it was concluded that the controlled deterioration test was efficient to determine different vigor levels of melon seeds. the controlled deterioration test, performed at 45o c for 48 hours, with seeds at 24% moisture content, was the most efficient to indicate seed vigor levels.

Revista do Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgi?es , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-69912001000100014
Abstract: traumatic diaphragmatic hernia is defined as a laceration of the diaphragm with an abdominal viscera herniation into the thorax. it is usually asymptomatic, with the exception of the cases with obstruction, strangulation, necrosis or perforation of the herniaded viscera. it is classified as acute, latent or chronic, in accordance with the evolutive period. at the latent phase, symptoms are indefinite and the radiological signals, which are suggestive of thoracic affections, are frequent and can induce a diagnosis error, leading to inadequate treatment.this article presents a case of chronic traumatic diaphragmatic hernia which was complicated by a gastricpleuralcutaneous fistula, due to an inadequate thoracic drainage. considering that this is a chronic affection with an unquestionable surgical indication, due to the complications risk, it is essential to have a detailed diagnostic investigation, which aims at both avoiding an intempestive or inadequate therapeutics behaviour and reducing the affection morbimortality. recently, the videolaparoscopic approach has proved to be more precise when compared to the other diagnostic methods, by direct visualization of the diaphragmatic laceration, allowing its correction by an immediate suture.
