Management of acute viral encephalitis in Brazil
Domingues, Renan Barros;Teixeira, Antnio Lúcio;
Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-86702009000600009
Abstract: the appropriate management of acute viral encephalitis is a challenge. clinical picture includes general symptoms and a wide range of neurological signs. etiological diagnosis cannot be performed only by clinical means and depends on neuroimaging studies and cerebrospinal fluid molecular analyses. it is recommended since some of these viruses are treatable and that the prognoses of these infections depend on the prompt administration of antiviral and/or immunomodulatory drugs. the management of acute viral encephalitis in brazil has some peculiarities. first, the etiological distribution of the viral encephalitis may differ from what is found in other countries. some viruses, such as dengue virus, are more common in brazil than in developed countries while others, like west nile virus, are not found here. second, there are some regions in brazil where neuroimaging and laboratorial methods are not available, and a clinical-based decision is the only therapeutic approach. as most of the guidelines in the literature are based on complimentary methods, it is relevant to establish an alternative approach compatible with the brazilian health system reality. the goal of this study was to review the recent advances in the field of the acute viral encephalitis, to discuss the diagnosis and the treatment of the main etiologies of acute viral encephalitis found in brazil, and to propose a viable guideline for the evaluation of the suspected acute viral encephalitis cases in the emergence room in brazil.
Apatia na doen?a de Alzheimer
Teixeira-Jr, Antnio Lúcio;Caramelli, Paulo;
Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-44462006005000002
Abstract: apathy is the most common neuropsychiatry syndrome in alzheimer's disease affecting 30-60% of patients. it can be defined as a loss of motivation and manifests in affect, cognition and behavioral changes, determining blunted emotional response, lack of insight and social retraction, respectively. in this paper, the clinical features and the therapeutic perspectives of apathy are presented. there is considerable overlap between apathy and depression in alzheimer's disease, but both are considered discrete syndromes. pharmacological interventions for apathy include psychostimulants, such as methylphenidate, dopaminergic agents and cholinesterase inhibitors, but the results are controversial and there is no established treatment.
Parti??o de recursos florais de espécies de Sida Linnaeus e Malvastrum coromandelianum (Linnaeus) Garcke (Malvaceae) entre Cephalurgus anomalus Moure & Oliveira (Hymenoptera, Andrenidae, Panurginae) e Melissoptila cnecomala (Moure) (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Eucerini)

Revista Brasileira de Zoologia , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-81752000000300016
Abstract: the flowering pattern and the visiting bee species on sida spp. and malvastrum coromandelianum (l.) garcke were studied in a restricted area at the campus of the universidade federal de vi?osa, minas gerais, brazil. there were differences among plant species but not among individuals in relation to the flowering time along the day and the time at which the flowers were visited by bees. melissoptila cnecomala (moure, 1944) and cephalurgus anomalus moure & oliveira, 1962 were the most frequent visitors. both species foraged on flowers for nectar and pollen. c. anomalus visited mainly plants with anthesis in the morning and m. cnecomala plants with anthesis in the afternoon. this fact sugests that those species of bees may be showing contrasting foraging strategies and can share the floral resources of sida and malvastrum. the males of c. anomalus mate on flowers of sida and exhibit a behavior known as rendevouz pollination.
Aspectos da biologia de Euplusia violacea (Blanchard) (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Euglossini)
Peruquetti, Rui Carlos;Campos, Lúcio Antnio de Oliveira;
Revista Brasileira de Zoologia , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-81751997000100009
Abstract: nests of orchid bee euplusia violacea (blanchard, 1840) colleted in trap-nests and in the wood of a construction in vi?osa, minas gerais (20o45'30"s, 42o52'05"w), brazil, were studied under laboratory condictions. some aspects of the biology of these bees were observed, such as sex-ratio, development time, iongevity and others. some aspects of the behavior of e. violada were also studied.
Efeitos da fragmenta??o florestal sobre vespas e abelhas solitárias em uma área da Amaz?nia Central
Morato, Elder F.;Campos, Lúcio Antnio de O.;
Revista Brasileira de Zoologia , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-81752000000200014
Abstract: the effects of forest fragmentation on tree-hole nesting solitary wasps and bees were investigated at a site 90 km north of manaus, brazil. wasp and bee faunas were monitored in continuous terra firme forest, forest fragments of 1, 10 and 100 ha, natural gaps in continuous forest and deforested areas. these habitats were studied in terms of abundance, richness, diversity and similarity. the wasps and bees were monitored monthly during june 1988 through june 1990 by means of a trap-nests technique. a total of 1529 nests of wasps of 24 species and 405 nests of bees of 14 species were collected. the number of species of wasps and bees varied little among the habitats. the genus trypoxylon latreille, 1796 (sphecidae) accounted for 79% of wasp nests and centris fabricius, 1804 (anthophoridae) for 56% of bee nests. wasps showed an overall preference for cleared areas and fragments of 1 ha, whereas bees showed an overall preference for continuous forest and natural gaps. nevertheless, some species of wasps showed a preference for nesting in continuous forest and some bees a preference for deforested areas. species found in deforested areas also nested in small size forest fragments. this shows that species occurring predominantly in cleared áreas can also colonize small forest fragments. the diversity of wasps and bees was greater in continuous forest. the composition of wasp and bee faunas of continuous forest was different from that of altered habitats. the similarity between the natural gaps and cleared areas was the smallest. the data suggest that the forest adapted bees are more sensitive to habitai fragmentation than the corresponding species of wasps. it is concluded that the preexisting cavity nesting solitary wasp and bee communities were altered by the forest fragmentation. however, it appears that at least in part, the natural variation in continuous forest could be responsible for the resulte obtained from this study.

Abstract: the article discusses the historical, scientific and literary aspects of malaria, with an emphasis on images of the disease in the work of the writer jo?o guimar?es rosa. the main reference for this study is the short story "sarapalha," which is featured in the book entitled sagarana. the author's medical training together with his experiences in the hinterlands of the country is the subject matter for the work, with stories of the harsh reality of life in the outback. a highlight of the story is the narrative of malaria in the language of the outback, though with absolute medical and scientific precision.
Nitrogênio e potássio via fertirriga??o e aduba??o convencional-estado nutricional das bananeiras e produ??o de frutos
Teixeira, Luiz Antnio Junqueira;Natale, William;Martins, Antnio Lúcio Mello;
Revista Brasileira de Fruticultura , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-29452007000100032
Abstract: a field experiment was carried out in pindorama (sao paulo state, brazil) with the objective of investigating the effects of n and k application through fertirrigation and conventional fertilization on banana plants during two crop cycles. plant growth, nutrition status and fruit production were evaluated. the fertilization caused a reduction in the productive cycle. fertilizers applied by fertirrigation or conventional fertilization changed the n and k leaf content. the fruit production varied in function of the treatment in the two cultivated cycles. fruit production (t ha 1 year 1) obtained with application of 80% of n and k doses by fertirrigation was comparable to fruit production with 100% of fertilizer rate applied by conventional fertlization.
