Buzar, Anne Giselle R;Oliveira, Valter R;Boiteux, Leonardo S;
Horticultura Brasileira , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-05362007000400007
Abstract: the genetic diversity of 64 tropical and subtropical onion accessions (allium cepa l.) belonging to the embrapa hortali?as collection was estimated using 23 morphological, agronomic, and biochemical descriptors. methods of multivariate statistical analysis (mahalanobis' d2 distances, tocher's cluster analysis and nearest-neighbor method) were employed in order to obtain the average genetic distances among accessions and to perform the clustering. the onion germplasm displayed a relatively large genetic base. cultivars ex 3000 and régia were the two most similar accessions. the highest mean genetic distance was observed between cultivars val 14 and beta cristal. the tocher's optimization method revealed the formation of 13 groups, whereas the nearest-neighbor method revealed the formation of 12 groups (cutting point of 43% of dissimilarity. the majority of the accessions belonging to grano and granex cultivars (agronomically classified as short-day and early-maturing types) clustered together in the same group. the white bulb accessions for processing (beta cristal; dehydrator # 8; dehydrator # 6; primero and white creole), with the exception of tampico white, displayed a small genetic divergence. the accessions tx 24, baia periforme super precoce, ex 3001, excel, red creole, h 688, franciscana ipa 10 and roxa ipa 3 displayed a large genetic divergence. the descriptors total sugar content, bulb length, number of days from planting to harvesting (i.e. plant cycle), percentage of bulbs with transversal diameter between 70 and 90 mm, and average bulb weight were responsible for 58% of the genetic variability present among accessions. studies of divergence among accessions are important to choose divergent parentals but complementary genetic materials would allow the development of useful segregating populations with wide genetic basis for tropical onion breeding programs.

Abstract: the synthesis of onion (allium cepa) hybrids relies upon the use of two genetic-cytoplasmic male-sterility systems, cms-s and cms-t, in association to the normal male-fertile (n) cytoplasm. however, the molecular phenotyping of male-sterility-inducing and normal cytoplasms of many onion accessions adapted for cultivation under tropical conditions is not available. some of these accessions were reported as presenting tolerance to diseases and adaptation to tropical and subtropical regions. therefore, these accessions are potential sources of parental lines for the brazilian onion hybrid breeding programs. in the present work, polymerase chain reaction (pcr) assays were conducted using mitochondria-derived markers in order to characterize the cytoplasm type present in different morpho-agronomic onion types cultivated in brazil. the s cytoplasm appeared to be the most frequent one among the 66 evaluated accessions with a frequency of 56%. the t male-sterility-inducing cytoplasm was observed in 25.8% of the accessions. of the samples, 18.2% displayed exclusively the cytoplasm n. this information could be useful to guide the onion breeding programs in the selection of parental lines aiming to develop hybrid cultivars adapted to tropical and subtropical areas of the world.

Brazilian Journal of Physical Therapy , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-35552010005000013
Abstract: introduction: patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (copd) report dyspnea when performing activities of daily living (adls) with elevated upper limbs. to elucidate the determinants of dyspnea, it is important to study the changes in the respiratory pattern of these patients and the electromyographic activity of their accessory muscles of respiration during adls. in the literature, there are no reports of a normative parameter, therefore it is necessary to study how these variables behave in healthy subjects. objectives: to verify, in healthy subjects, the existence of changes in the respiratory pattern and activation of the sternocleidomastoid (scm) muscle during an adl with unsupported arm elevation. methods: thirteen male subjects, 60.57 (±6.42) years old, with normal spirometry values for age and sex, were evaluated using surface electromyography (emg) and respiratory inductive plethysmography (rip) collected at rest and during the activity of combing their hair with elevated and unsupported upper limbs. the data distribution was assessed using shapiro-wilk's test. anova was used to compare the phases, and when the difference was significant (p<0.05), tukey's test was applied. results: the rip during the adl showed a significant increase in tidal volume, minute ventilation, respiratory frequency and mean inspiratory flow. thoracoabdominal asynchrony was identified in percentage of asynchrony in inspiration, expiration, and phase angle (p<0.05). the emg showed an increase in smc muscle recruitment (p<0.05). conclusions: healthy subjects increased their scm muscle activation and changed their breathing pattern when performing the adl with unsupported arm elevation, resulting in thoracoabdominal asynchrony.

Revista Brasileira de Educa??o Médica , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-55022008000100014
Abstract: the learning process has fosterd intense debate since ancient times among the different proposed theories david ausubel cognitivist conceptual frame of has found relevance during the xxth century through to the xxirst. it assumes that learning mechanisms are more efficient in such situations when the student is able to aggregate and incorporate significance to new contents, by means of linking then to previous knowledge, thus avoiding that the knowledge be stored by way of inept associations in the cognitive structure. the scope of medical education demands the changes necessary for the formation of a professional able to know how to learn; meaningful learning allows the genuine contextualization of knowledge needed by the medical practice, therefore permitting effective learning and practice in a complex interdisciplinary context. in conformity with the above exposed, the present article aims to present the theorie of significant learning, discussing elements of the integration of this concept into the medical education.

Marcomini, Luís Antonio Gorla;Sobral, Régia Maria Gondim Ramos;Seixas, Giselle Oliveira;Sousa, Sidney Júlio de Faria e;
Revista Brasileira de Oftalmologia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-72802011000600020
Abstract: corneal transplantation is singular because it is habitually performed on persons with visual deficiency but with preserved life expectancy, mobility and social life. a graft not well succeeded may cause real blindness and permanent misery due to pain and discomfort. one of the fundamental determinants of the success of corneal transplantation is the use of corneas of good quality. the selection of these corneas is based on three rules: innocuousness, transparency and vitality. each one of these concepts is considered in detail in this work.
A desconstru??o do conceito de dislexia: conflito entre verdades
Massi, Giselle;Santana, Ana Paula de Oliveira;
Paidéia (Ribeir?o Preto) , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-863X2011000300013
Abstract: this paper discusses the deconstruction of the concept of dyslexia, constructed around two axes: the health sciences, which present organic factors as causes of dyslexia (brain functioning, genetic factors, cognitive difficulties) and human sciences, which link causes to social factors (literacy, singularities, educational factors) whose implications result in children’s difficulties. there is, in one of the axes, the construction of pathology, and in the other, its deconstruction through concepts such as diversity, and social and cultural differences. this discussion is relevant because professionals working in these fields become either “accomplices” or “critics” of one of these interpretations of reality.
