Flujos migratorios hacia Europa: actualidad y perspectivas
Cabré, Anna,Domingo, Andreu
Arbor : Ciencia, Pensamiento y Cultura , 2002,
Fatty acid-binding protein 4 impairs the insulin-dependent nitric oxide pathway in vascular endothelial cells

Abstract: In human umbilical vascular endothelial cells (HUVECs), we measured the effects of FABP4 on the insulin-mediated endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) expression and activation and on NO production. We also explored the impact of exogenous FABP4 on the insulin-signalling pathway (insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS1) and Akt).We found that eNOS expression and activation and NO production are significantly inhibited by exogenous FABP4 in HUVECs. FABP4 induced an alteration of the insulin-mediated eNOS pathway by inhibiting IRS1 and Akt activation. These results suggest that FABP4 induces endothelial dysfunction by inhibiting the activation of the insulin-signalling pathway resulting in decreased eNOS activation and NO production. These findings provide a mechanistic linkage between FABP4 and impaired endothelial function in diabetes, which leads to an increased cardiovascular risk. The adipose fatty acid-binding protein (FABP), also known as FABP4 and aP2, is one of the best characterised intracellular lipid transport proteins [1]. It belongs to the superfamily of low-molecular-weight intracellular lipid-binding proteins and plays a central regulatory role in energy metabolism and inflammation [2,3]. FABP4 is highly expressed in mature adipocytes and accounts for approximately 6?% of their soluble protein. FABP4 is also found circulating in the plasma. In the last several years, much effort has been focused on uncovering the role of FABP4. However, neither the secretory pathways nor the functions of circulating FABP4 are known. We and other authors have shown that FABP4 levels are increased in obesity, metabolic syndrome (MS), type 2 diabetes (T2D), and familial combined hyperlipidaemia or lipodystrophy syndromes, and these levels are also closely correlated with adverse lipid profiles and insulin resistance [4-10]. In these studies, serum FABP4 predicted the development of MS and atherosclerosis [11,12].A recent study showed that although serum levels of both adipocy
Emergency hospital services utilization in Lleida (Spain): A cross-sectional study of immigrant and Spanish-born populations

BMC Health Services Research , 2008, DOI: 10.1186/1472-6963-8-81
Abstract: Cross-sectional study of all the 96,916 EHS visits by patients 15 to 64 years old, attended during the years 2004 and 2005 in a public teaching hospital. Demographic data, diagnoses of the EHS visits, frequency of hospital admissions, mortality and diagnoses at hospital discharge were obtained. Utilization rates were estimated by group of origin. Poisson regression was used to estimate the rate ratios of being visited in the EHS with respect to the Spanish-born population.Immigrants from low-income countries use EHS services more than the Spanish-born population. Differences in utilization patterns are particularly marked for Maghrebi men and women and sub-Saharan women. Immigrant males are at lower risk of being admitted to the hospital, as compared with Spanish-born males. On the other hand, immigrant women are at higher risk of being admitted. After excluding the visits with gynecologic and obstetric diagnoses, women from sub-Saharan Africa and the Maghreb are still at a higher risk of being admitted than their Spanish-born counterparts. In Lleida (Spain), immigrants use more EHS than the Spanish born population. Future research should indicate whether the same pattern is found in other areas of Spain and whether EHS use is attributable to health needs, barriers to access to the primary care services or similarities in the way immigrants access health care in their countries of origin. The number of immigrants in Spain in the last decade has increased dramatically. In 1996 the immigrant population represented 1.4% of the resident Spanish population, and in 2006 it represented 10.8% [1]. In 2003, more than 2/3 of the immigrant population had been living in Spain for less than 5 years [2]. At this point there are few studies that have evaluated the impact of this migratory phenomenon on our country's health care system and, in particular, on the use of emergency hospital services (EHS).In Spain, there is a National Health System (NHS), financed mainly by taxes, which
Astrophysical Tests of Modified Gravity: A Screening Map of the Nearby Universe

Physics , 2012, DOI: 10.1088/1475-7516/2012/07/034
Abstract: Astrophysical tests of modified modified gravity theories in the nearby universe have been emphasized recently by Hui, Nicolis and Stubbs (2009) and Jain and VanderPlas (2011). A key element of such tests is the screening mechanism whereby general relativity is restored in massive halos or high density environments like the Milky Way. In chameleon theories of gravity, including all f(R) models, field dwarf galaxies may be unscreened and therefore feel an extra force, as opposed to screened galaxies. The first step to study differences between screened and unscreened galaxies is to create a 3D screening map. We use N-body simulations to test and calibrate simple approximations to determine the level of screening in galaxy catalogs. Sources of systematic errors in the screening map due to observational inaccuracies are modeled and their contamination is estimated. We then apply our methods to create a map out to 200 Mpc in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey footprint using data from the Sloan survey and other sources. In two companion papers this map will be used to carry out new tests of gravity using distance indicators and the disks of dwarf galaxies. We also make our screening map publicly available.
Who are Cerverí's Worst Enemies?
Miriam Cabré
Glossator : Practice and Theory of the Commentary , 2011,
Abstract: This reading proposes a new interpretation of a poem by Catalan troubadour Cerverí de Girona (fl. 1259-85), an interpretation that departs from the accepted, literal solution to this poem (looking for "enemies" Cerverì descries among the political or familial figures surrounding the poet) to show, via an intertextual reading, that these "enemies" are only metaphorical. Cerverì is the proud successor of two centuries of troubadour tradition at the Aragonese court of Pere the Great, facing the influx of fashionable Angevin trends, especially the dance-songs imported from the court of Pere of Arragon's enemy Charles of Anjou. Like Sordello's Ensehnamen, Cerverì's poem 'Una re dey a Deu grazir’ serves as a focal point to refract his present and past career: polemical when his patron was young, more stately now that Cerverí is the public voice of a king. It is a comparison with the Portuguese trovador Johan Soarez Coelho (active at the court of Alfonso III of Portugal until 1279) that conclusively proves the "identity" of Cerveri's "enemies": his own eyes that have betrayed him. The two poets would have interacted at the Toledo court of Alfonso X of Castile in 1269.
Una imatge val per mil paraules
Jaume Cabré
DIGITHUM , 1999,
I van dir: "Què fem avui?"
