Accumulation of Gel Particles in the Sea-Surface Microlayer during an Experimental Study with the Diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii  [PDF]

International Journal of Geosciences (IJG) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ijg.2013.41013

Since the early 80’s, the sea-surface microlayer (SML) has been hypothesized as being a gelatinous film. Recent studies have confirmed this characteristic, which confers properties that mediate mass and energy fluxes between ocean and atmosphere, including the emission of primary organic aerosols from marine systems. We investigated SML thickness and composition in five replicate indoor experiments between September and December 2010. During each experiment, the SML and underlying seawater were sampled from four seawater tanks: one served as control, and three were inoculated with Thalassiosira weissflogii grown in chemostats at 180, 380 and 780 ppm pCO2. We examined organic material enrichment factors in each tank, paying particular attention to gel particles accumulation such as polysaccharidic Transparent Exopolymer Particles (TEP) and the proteinaceous Coomassie Stainable Particles (CSP). While previous studies have observed carbohydrates and TEP enrichment in the microlayer, little is yet known about proteinaceous gel particles in the SML. Our experiments show that CSP dominate the gelatinous composition of the SML. We believe that the enrichment in CSP points to the importance of bacterial activity in the microlayer. Bacteria may play a pivotal role in mediating processes at the air-sea interface thanks to their exudates and protein content that can be released through cell disruption.

Tears on the screen: Bodily emotionalism in Reality-Tv
Observatorio (OBS*) , 2011,
Abstract: our contemporary culture is in many aspects obsessed with emotions and authenticity. the media figures as a key locus in this development. however, the function and display of emotions vary depending on media type and genre. the article studies the construction of bodily emotionalism in reality-tv where corporeal signs such as tears confirm the display of emotional authenticity. it argues that authenticity appears to be synonymous with foremost the exposure of so called primary emotions, which are considered expressions for more direct and less controlled impulses. the specific value placed on tears in our culture is discussed in relation to televisions emotional script, the authentic claims of the genre and as a cultural longing after transparency where the ′truth′ resides within the body.
Brief Report on the Extended Linear Sigma Model
Habersetzer, Anja
High Energy Physics - Phenomenology , 2013,
Abstract: We present a chiral effective model which exhibits all the known symmetry features of the QCD Lagrangian. The extended Linear Sigma Model (eLSM) includes (pseudo-)scalar and (axial-) vector mesons, glueballs, and baryons. It has proven to be a useful tool to understand the nature of the low-energy resonances. It can be used to describe the masses and decay widths of the known low-energy mesons and to disentangle the complicated picture of resonances in the low-energy range. We can answer some of the open questions in the low-energy region, e.g. the resonance (f_0(1500)) is a predominantly glueball state and the resonance (f_0(1370)) is most likely the chiral partner of the pion. We could also find that the resonance (N(1650)) is favoured as the chiral partner of the nucleon (N(939)). In addition the temperature dependence of the chiral condensate and the glueball condensate can be used to study the phase diagram at nonzero temperatures and densities. At nonzero density we achieve nuclear matter saturation.

Characterization of Xylanase from Streptomyces spp. Strain C1-3
HAYATI Journal of Biosciences , 2007,
Abstract: Xylan is the major constituent of hemi cellulose. Several enzymes are needed to hydrolyse xylan completely, including xylanase. Currently, there is an increasing use of this enzyme. This study was carried out to characterize the xylanase from Streptomyces spp. strain C1-3. Results showed that the xylanase displayed its highest activity at pH 3 and 90 oC and was stable up to 10 hours at this conditions. Its activity increased after the addition of Cu2+, Fe2+, and Co2+ under concentration of 1 and 5 mM, respectively. The activity however, decreased after the addition of Mg2+, Ca2+ at 1 mM and Zn2+ at 5 mM. After a test with five kinds of xylan (i.e. from Birchwood, Beechwood, Arabinoxylan, Oat spelt and CMC), the xylanase of Streptomyces spp. C1-3 showed its preferences to Birchwood- and Arabino-xylan. The results showed that the xylanase of Streptomyces spp. C1-3 was characterized as a thermostable acid xylanase.

Abstract: In ihrer Studie betrachtet Barbara STAUBER das Handeln junger M nner und Frauen im Rahmen der Jugendkultur "Techno". URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0801187 In her study Barbara STAUBER asks how young women and men present themselves within the context of "Techno". By using "topic-centered" interviews—as a variation of WITZEL's method of problem-centered interviews—STAUBER examines how belonging to the "Techno" youth culture influences young people in performing and generating their selves. This study integrates two theoretical perspectives. First, it focuses on structural conditions within the context of becoming an adult, such as education, living arrangements, life styles, and relationships with parents, peers, and romantic partners. Within these contexts STAUBER analyses different forms of personal freedom, dependencies, and hierarchical conflicts within the structural environment. However, the study only contains those issues of growing up which are associated with the young people's connection to "Techno". The second focus is on individuals' actions and performances, and STAUBER comprehensibly integrates GIDDENS' concept of "virtual structures" into the theoretical and empirical parts of her study.

URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs0703117 Students' lives are more and more influenced by the media (e.g. television and the Internet). These influences often extend to the learning strategies they use in school. To explore these influences further, the author used a method developed for the task to collect "subtexts" (comments students make to themselves during regular classroom lessons). These "subtexts" were collected during lessons in a 6th grade classroom and were subsequently analyzed using the documentary method (BOHNSACK, 2003). It was found that some of the collected "subtexts" were modeled on media prototypes, with these prototypes eventually influencing the learning strategies employed by the students. This relationship is explored.

URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs040322 In the reviewed anthology, experts from science and practice present the state-of-the-art of basic topics in the field of new media in education. In doing so, they point out the potentials as well as the limits of new media and discuss vital questions concerning their impact and effectiveness in an educational setting. Across the twenty-three contributions the topic is addressed from several research fields—e.g. educational studies, psychology, media studies and information technology—and thereby seen from different but complementary perspectives. URN: urn:nbn:de:0114-fqs020368 In this revised dissertation Roland BADER concentrates on outer-school media pedagogic and interactional concepts of learning. Learning and social psychological concepts, for example activity theory, are described, as well as learning communities. Having described the theoretical background, BADER gives a detailed summary of a study of pedagogical education. Here he explains how to train pedagogues. Bader emphasizes the structure of learning communities and reveals the limits of these communities. The coherence of communication in groups with regard to exchange of experience can be seen as one result.
