There are many reports on the relationship between household pets, sensitization to the pet, and sensitization to other allergens, often with conflicting results. Pet ownership is not random, and household pets are associated with exposures other than pet allergens. We will review some of the evidence regarding the effects of household pets on infant immune responses, focusing on data from birth cohort studies. It remains unclear precisely why some children develop specific sensitizations to pets whilst others do not in the face of equivalent exposures, but it is likely to be due to gene-environment interactions. Further long-term follow-up of children in whom neonatal and infant immune responses have been measured is necessary to understand how these events occur and how they relate to subsequent disease.

What work has to be done to implement collaborative care for depression? Process evaluation of a trial utilizing the Normalization Process Model

Abstract: Application of the NPM to qualitative data collected in both focus groups and one-to-one interviews before and after an exploratory randomised controlled trial of a collaborative model of care for depression.Findings are presented as they relate to the four factors of the NPM (interactional workability, relational integration, skill-set workability, and contextual integration) and a number of necessary tasks are identified. Using the model, it was possible to observe that predictions about necessary work to implement collaborative care that could be made from analysis of the pre-trial data relating to the four different factors of the NPM were indeed borne out in the post-trial data. However, additional insights were gained from the post-trial interview participants who, unlike those interviewed before the trial, had direct experience of a novel intervention. The professional freedom enjoyed by more senior mental health workers may work both for and against normalisation of collaborative care as those who wish to adopt new ways of working have the freedom to change their practice but are not obliged to do so.The NPM provides a useful structure for both guiding and analysing the process by which an intervention is optimized for testing in a larger scale trial or for subsequent full-scale implementation.There is now a considerable evidence base for collaborative care as a 'technology' in the broadest sense for improving quality of care depression in the community [1,2], but an acknowledged gap between demonstrated efficacy of this novel intervention in randomised controlled trials and implementation in everyday practice [3]. Abstract: This study examined the spatial and temporal characteristics of brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis and brown trout Salmo trutta redds in two sites from two creeks in the Black Hills of South Dakota, USA. Spawning began in both streams in early October and continued through mid-November. Significant spatial clustering was only observed on both Rapid Creek sites, where-as random redd development was observed in both of the sites on Box Elder Creek. Based on visual observations, brown trout redds were more abundant in Rapid Creek, where-as brook trout redds were more abundant in Box Elder Creek. Differences in redd clustering could be due to species-specific, geological, or hydrological differences between the creeks
Non-Consumptive Activities on a Public Hunting and Fishing Area  [PDF]

Abstract: The activities of all 1513 individuals who visited a public hunting and fishing area near Spearfish, South Dakota, USA, were recorded from May 16 to August 16, 2006. Over the entire period, slightly less than 60% of the visitors were engaged in fishing, and they accounted for nearly 80% of the total visitation time. Over 40% of the visitors were primarily there for non-consumptive (not hunting or fishing) reasons, including touring (sight-seeing), dog training and exercising, and swimming. Less than 1% of the visitors were there for photography. The percentage of visitors fishing decreased from a high of over 65% in the first 31-day period to less than 50% in the third 31-day period, with nearly all of the non-consumptive activities showing a reverse trend. The percentage of visitors swimming or conducting dog activities doubled from the first to third periods. The percentage of time that visitors spent fishing decreased over time, while the time spent on non-consumptive activities increased. However, the increase in non-consumptive activity time was not necessarily in proportion to the increase in the number of visitors involved with non-consumptive activities. By the final period, more visitors were at the area for touring, dogs, and swimming, than for fishing, but fishing still accounted for most of the visitation time. These results indicate an abundance of non-consumptive activities on a public area purchased and maintained with revenue from consumptive hunting and fishing activities, creating the opportunity for user conflicts and potentially threatening the user-pay model of natural resource conservation.

Abstract:
This research aims to examine the existence and nature of complex business-social relationships in the Chinese context (Guanxi) and evaluate how these relationships influence the behaviors of managers in State-owned Chinese engineering firms. Research on Guanxi is comprehensive though little work investigates internal influences and how internal relationships may mirror or replicate external Guanxi. This study uses a snowball sample of 66 senior managers across the key functional disciplines in typical large Chinese firms and explores how often strategic level problems in the firm are solved through relationships outside, inside or between the companies. Do Guanxi networks penetrate the organization itself and are there relationships that are unique to internal networks? The research finds that problem solving at strategic levels are often through internal and external networks, rather than internal management structures, but also that different problems complexities typically demonstrate unique problem-solving networks. The research identifies three different forms that these relationships take: Internal, inter-firm and hybrid relationship modes. Implications for this work suggest problem solving in Chinese firms is enhanced through cooperation and mutual respect, and likely to be inhibited by traditional Western approaches to management.
A polymorphism in gasdermin B (GSDMB) gene is associated with severe asthma exacerbations in childhood: A population-based birth cohort study

Abstract: Rationale. Markers on chromosome 17q12 have been associated withchildhood asthma in genome-wide association studies. Objective.We investigated the association of a single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP) in GSDMB (rs7216389) on 17q12 with asthma presence andseverity in a population-based birth cohort study. Methods. Childrenwere followed from birth to age 8 years. Data on parentally-reportedsymptoms were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire at age 1, 3, 5 and 8 years. Atopy was assessed by skin testing at age 3, 5 and 8 years. Information on asthma/wheeze hospital admissions and severe asthma exacerbations was collected from child’s primary care medical record. Data were analyzed as a recessive genetic model, with T-allele homozygotes as the risk group. Results. Compared to C allele carriers, T-allele homozygotes of rs7216389 were significantly more likely to: wheeze at age 3, 5 and 8 years; have persistent wheeze (OR 1.69, 95% CI 1.05-2.71, p=0.03); have frequent episodes of wheezing and be on asthma medication. In a multiple logistic regression model adjusted for gender, atopic sensitisation and maternal smoking, T allele homozygotes were significantly more likely to be hospitalized (aOR 2.20 [1.22-3.99], p=0.0009) with Cox regression hazard ratio for T-allele homozygotes of 1.94 [1.13-3.33], p=0.016. Results of Cox regression analysis investigating the eff ect of genotype on the age of first severe exacerbation of asthma indicated an overall hazard ratio of severe asthma exacerbation among T-allele homozygotes of 1.53 [1.04-2.27], p=0.03. Conclusions. Th is is the fi rst population-based birth cohort study to confirm that the risk of childhood wheeze and severe asthma/wheeze exacerbations is increased among rs7216389 TT homozygotes.
Use of a Public Fishing Area Determined by Vehicle Counters with Verification by Trail Cameras  [PDF]

Abstract:
This study was performed in order to determine visitation at remote areas that would be unaffordable due to logistic reasons. Four TrafxTM vehicle counters, each programmed with different settings, were placed along the lone access road to remotely sense the daily use activities and count accuracy at the New Underwood Lake Public Water Access Area. Use was corroborated during daylight hours with game cameras. Data was stratified between weekdays/weekends due to differences between the two periods. Two counter settings, threshold and delay, were best when set at a value of 8, but a value of 16 for delay provided almost equal results. Overall, there were 38 counts of use per day for a total of 2318 over the 61 day period. This study demonstrated how vehicle counters, in combination with game cameras for verification, can aid managers for determining use in remote access areas. Future work may lead to identifying details for producing a surrogate to traditional angler use surveys.
Adenocarcinoma in a retrorectal cytstic hamartoma: A case report and literature review

Abstract: Retrorectal cystic hamartomas are rare congenital lesions derived from the vestigial portion of the embryonic hindgut. These lesions present in a vague manner and so mimic the presentation of more common mass lesions in the pelvic region. They most frequently afflict middle-aged women, causing vague pelvic pains, discomfort with defaecation or sitting, and altered bowel function. Malignant transformation within these lesions is extremely rare. We describe a case of adenocarcinoma within a retrorectal cystic hamartoma, initially manifesting in a 54-year-old woman and recurring over a 5-year period. A computed tomography (CT) scan and pathology reports are included in the study, and findings at operations are discussed. We also include a comprehensive review of the literature. The contribution of Stanis aw D u yński to flysch sedimentology: A ‘Western’ perspective.

Abstract: : In his ground-breaking research on the sedimentary structures of turbidites, Stanis aw D u yński demonstrated and took to new levels of accomplishment the defining attributes of the Kraków School of flysch sedimentology established by Marian Ksi kiewicz at the Jagiellonian University. These attributes included a meticulous approach to fieldwork, the ability to recognize the scalar and vector relationships of diverse sedi- mentary features, a working knowledge of several languages, a capacity to describe systematically structures that had previously received scant attention in the world literature of geology, and innovation in the transfer of scientific knowledge. D u yński also added elements that were distinctively his own: a highly inventive approach to the replication of turbidite sedimentary structures in laboratory flumes, an openness to new ideas, boundless enthusiasm for his chosen field, and an exuberantly outgoing personality. In spite of worldwide recognition for his numerous and wide-ranging achievements in geology, he viewed himself first and foremost as one of the senior students of Marian Ksi kiewicz. In this role, D u yński utilised every opportunity to present with great insight and objectivity the work of the Kraków School, enthusiastically shared his extensive knowledge of sedimentology with experienced colleagues and new acquaintances alike and, in particular, gave generous encouragement to young researchers.
