Carcinoma cell identification via optical microscopy and shape feature analysis  [PDF]

Abstract: Optical microscopy is commonly used for cancer cell detection. Focusing on carcinoma cell identification via optical microscopy, a proof-of-concept study was performed at Laboratory of Design, Optimization and Modeling (LCOMS) to determine the grade of cancer cells. This paper focuses on three types of abnormal cells; namely, Benign Hyperplasia (BH), Intraepithelial Neoplasia (IN), which is a precursor state for cancer, and Carcinoma (Ca), which corresponds to abnormal tissue proliferation cancer. These types of cells were used to assess the efficiency of using shape features to identify carcinoma cells. A comparative study based on performance indicator concludes that three features, Area, Xor-Convex, and Solidity, were found to be effective in identifying the Carcinoma grade of cancer cells.

Abstract: a bagasse dryer designed by estación experimental agroindustrial obispo colombres was attached to a conventional bagasse boiler (boiler no. 5) in a sugar mill in mexico for evaluation. measurement tests and material and energy balances for the boiler operating with and without the dryer were made. when supplied only with wet bagasse, boiler no. 5, with a nominal production of 60 t/h of steam and a maximum working pressure of 29 bar, could generate no more than 33 t/h of steam at 19 bar and 269 oc, with an energy yield of 60.4% and an index of 1.6 kg steam/ kg of bagasse . when the dryer was attached, 28.6 tons of bagasse was dried from 50.2% moisture to 30.4%. approximately 72% of that pre-dried bagasse, mixed with wet bagasse, was fed into the boiler, which then produced 58.4 t/h of steam, i.e. 77% more than without the dryer. the energy efficiency of the boiler-dryer system was 73.6% and the index was 2.0 kg steam/ kg of bagasse, i.e. 21.8%, 25% higher values than those for the original boiler. this increase in steam production allowed putting boiler no. 6 out of service. boiler no. 6 produced about 20 t/h of steam with similar efficiency to that of boiler no. 5 without the dryer. these improvements resulted in energy savings of about 18%, as compared with the energy consumed by the two boilers (no. 5 and no. 6) when the dryer was not working. energy saved amounted to 45.4 mj/h, which is equivalent to 1103 l/h of fuel oil. this represents savings of usd 1.5 million per season.

Abstract: a deterministic mathematical method for processing experimental data, applied to a steam generator-air heater system in stationary state which operates with one or two fuels simultaneously, was developed to determine the thermal of the system, as well as fuel combustion and heat exchanger efficiency. the methodology is based on the resolution of matter and energy balances for each of the system components. this methodology can be applied to steam generators using bagasse, natural gas or both (as a blend) as fuels. examples of thermal efficiency calculations, using data from several experimental tests on steam generators where each type of fuel processing occurs, are presented. the resolution of matter and energy balances in a boiler fired by bagasse gave a thermal efficiency of 53.2% and a rate of 1.38 kg of steam/ kg of bagasse. for a boiler fired by natural gas, a thermal efficiency of 76.7% and an index of 9.8 kg of steam/ nm3 of natural gas, were obtained. for a boiler fired simultaneously by bagasse and natural gas, a yield of 68.3% and an index of 1.87 kg of steam/ kg of equivalent bagasse were recorded. to validate this methodology, these values were contrasted with the efficiency values obtained in accordance with the american society of mechanical engineers (asme) code.

Abstract: previously heated secondary air injection is evaluated as an alternative to increase thermal efficiency of bagasse steam boilers. aspects regarding the combustion process and the factors affecting it are also described. tests were made in a bagasse boiler of a sugar mill. thermal efficiency of the bagasse boiler with cold secondary air injection was determined by solving mass and energy balances. a new thermal efficiency for the case in which all secondary air is pre-heated with hot gases was determined afterwards. finally, a technical-economic analysis was made to evaluate the yield of this technology, taking into account bagasse saving and its equivalent in natural gas. for the analyzed case, the results showed: an increase in the thermal efficiency of the boiler (1,62 points); a higher steam production index (2,27%); a reduction in bagasse consumption (2,45%); an acceptable payback period of the investment (114 days of the harvest season).

Abstract: Se desarrolló un método matemático determinístico de procesamiento de registros experimentales, aplicable a un sistema generador de vapor-precalentador de aire en estado estacionario, que opere con uno o dos combustibles simultáneamente, para determinar la eficiencia térmica del mismo y la eficiencia con la que se oxida el combustible, como así también el rendimiento del intercambiador de calor. La mecánica de procesamiento se basa en la resolución de los balances de materia y energía sobre los diferentes equipos que conforman el sistema. Esta metodología es aplicable a aquellos generadores de vapor que empleen, como combustible, bagazo, gas natural o ambos (caldera mixta). Se ilustran, como ejemplos de aplicación, los resultados del cálculo de la eficiencia térmica de diferentes generadores de vapor para cada tipo de combustible procesado, empleando para ello datos de diversos ensayos experimentales. La resolución de los balances de materia y energía en una caldera que quema bagazo, dio como resultado un rendimiento térmico del 53,2% y un índice de generación de 1,38 kg de vapor/ kg de bagazo. Para una caldera cuyo combustible es gas natural, se obtuvo un rendimiento térmico del 76,7% y un índice de generación de 9,8 kg de vapor/ Nm3 de gas natural. Para una caldera que quema en forma simultánea bagazo y gas natural, se determinó un rendimiento del 68,3% y un índice de generación de 1,87 kg de vapor/ kg de bagazo equivalente. Como validación de esta metodología, se contrastan estos valores de eficiencia con los obtenidos según el código propuesto por la American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Abstract: En la bibliografía consultada no se encontraron trabajos de secado de cáscara de limón en secaderos rotativos. Se realizaron ensayos de medición en secaderos rotativos de cáscara de limón en una instalación agroindustrial del noroeste argentino. Se desarrolló un modelo matemático semiempírico mediante la resolución de los balances de materia y energía. Se obtuvo una correlación estadística para la predicción de los coeficientes globales volumétricos de transferencia de calor aparentes para secaderos rotativos de cáscara de limón. Abstract: Se evaluó el desempe o de un secador de bagazo dise ado por la Estación Experimental Agroindustrial Obispo Colombres, acoplado a una caldera bagacera convencional en un ingenio de México (caldera No 5). Para ello, se realizaron ensayos de mediciones y balances de materia y energía, para la caldera operando con el secador y sin él en funcionamiento. La caldera No 5, de una producción nominal de 60 t/h de vapor y una presión máxima de trabajo de 29 bar, cuando fue alimentada únicamente con bagazo húmedo pudo generar como máximo 33 t/h de vapor a 19 bar y 269oC, con un rendimiento energético de 60,4% y un índice de generación de 1,6 kg de vapor/ kg de bagazo. Con la adición del secador, se logró secar 28,6 toneladas de bagazo de 50,2% a 30,4% de humedad. Aproximadamente un 72% de este bagazo presecado se mezcló con bagazo húmedo y se utilizó para alimentar la caldera, produciéndose así 58,4 t/h de vapor; es decir, 77% más de vapor que sin secador. El rendimiento energético del sistema caldera-secador fue de 73,6%, un 21,8% superior al de la caldera sin secador, mientras que el índice de generación fue de 2,0 kg de vapor/ kg de bagazo, 25% mayor que el de la caldera original. Este aumento en la producción de vapor permitió sacar de servicio a la caldera No 6, que producía aproximadamente 20 t/h de vapor, con un rendimiento similar al de la caldera No 5 sin secador. Estas mejoras dieron como resultado, un ahorro de energía de 45,4 MJ/h, aproximadamente un 18% respecto a la energía consumida por ambas calderas (No 5 y No 6) cuando no funcionaba el secador. Este ahorro equivale a 1103 l/h de "fuel oil", es decir, alrededor de 1,5 millones de dólares por zafra. Abstract: Durante las moliendas en los a os 2008, 2009, 2010 y 2011, se realizaron mediciones de las concentraciones de material particulado total (MPT) en las emisiones de chimeneas de calderas de la industria azucarera, en Tucumán, R. Argentina. El objetivo de este trabajo fue monitorear la evolución de la concentración y emisión de MPT y observar la influencia de los sistemas de filtrado instalados en las chimeneas de las mencionadas unidades. Se ilustran los datos de las emisiones de MPT obtenidas en los a os indicados, con valores promedio por caldera de 58,5 kg/h, 33,6 kg/h, 47,6 kg/h y 33,9 kg/h, respectivamente. Asimismo, este estudio muestra un seguimiento minucioso de un grupo de calderas bagaceras, para determinar la evolución de las emisiones en función de las variables de operación características de esas calderas. Los resultados demostraron la influencia del mantenimiento y de la correcta operación de los equipos de filtrado en la calidad de los gases que fluyen por las chimeneas. Se estudió la influencia de los índices característicos de dise o de los lavadores de gases en la concentración de partículas. Se observó que se ha logrado un menor impacto ambiental a lo largo del tiempo analizado. Total particulate matter (TPM) concentrations were measured in stack fumes from sugar factory steam generating boilers in Tucumán in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. The objective of this work was to monitor the evolution of TPM concentrations and emissions and observe the efficiency of filtration systems used in sugarcane factory stacks. Average values of 58.5 kg/h, 33.6 kg/h, 47.6 kg/h and 33.9 kg/h were obtained in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011, respectively. Bagasse boilers were also meticulously surveyed to obtain data of the evolution of emissions in relation to specific operation variables of the boilers. Data concerning the quality of effluent gasses from the stacks demonstrated the influence of maintaining and correctly using filtration media. Decrease in particle concentration was studied in relation to design indices of gas washers, and it was observed that the technological advances introduced into sugar mill equipment design have led to a lesser environmental impact.

Abstract: Se evaluaron tres calderas de vapor modernas instaladas en ingenios azucareros de Tucumán, R. Argentina, equipos que se encuadran dentro de las tecnologías de producción más limpia. Tomando como base la metodología de cálculo de la eficiencia térmica de generadores de vapor desarrollada en 2008 por la Sección Ingeniería y Proyectos Agroindustriales de la Estación Experimental Agroindustrial Obispo Colombres, y a partir de los datos recolectados por medio de mediciones y balances de materia y energía, se determinaron sus principales variables características de operación. Las eficiencias energéticas determinadas para cada una fueron del 73,5%; 75,2% y 77,3%. Se realizó además una comparación con las calderas de vapor convencionales y se determinó el ahorro de bagazo que puede obtenerse con las calderas modernas, el cual resultó ser de un 27,6%. Como una ventaja adicional, se hace mención a la posibilidad de mejora del rendimiento térmico del ciclo motriz de la planta, que viene acompa ada con el aumento de la presión de trabajo de la caldera. Three modern steam boilers, installed in sugar mills in Tucumán, R. Argentina, to attain a cleaner production, were evaluated. Their major operating variables were determined using the methodology for calculating thermal efficiency of steam generators developed by Sección Ingeniería y Proyectos Agroindustriales of Estación Experimental Agroindustrial Obispo Colombres in 2008, and data obtained from measurements and material and energy balances. Energy efficiency values determined for each boiler were 73.5%, 75.2% and 77.3%, respectively. A comparison with conventional steam boilers was drawn and it was found that bagasse savings amounted to about 27.6% when modern boilers were used. The possibility of improving the thermal efficiency of the plant cycle by increasing boiler pressure is mentioned as an additional advantage.
