Abstract: the events included in the process of repair of corneal damage occur simultaneously and involve proliferation, migration, differentiation, cell apoptosis and intercellular communication. several soluble factors, mesenchymal matrix proteins, proteoglycans, proteolytic enzymes and some cell types are covered in this review, which explains the processes of repair of corneal wounds, either superficial or penetrating. the amniotic membrane, used in ophthalmic surgery, was studied because of the contribution of its functions to the repair process. however, these functions may be lost when the amniotic membrane is subjected to conservation. therefore, it is important to understand the repair process of lesions involving or not the entire thickness of the cornea, and choose the best use of the amniotic membrane, when it is indicated for the treatment of these lesions.
A comparison of the effects of propofol and thiopental on tear production in dogs

Abstract: the tear film plays an important role in maintaining the integrity of the ocular suface. during general anesthesia, tear production is considerably reduced, which requires care to prevent adverse effects that result in diseases of these structures. studies comparing the effects of induction of anaesthesia with thiopental and propofol on tear production have not been carried out yet. because these drugs are used in veterinary medicine, we decided to evaluate the tear production in 30 dogs undergoing experimental surgery as well as routine procedures at the veterinary hospital of federal university of vi?osa. patients were divided into two groups of equal number. all animals were sedated with clorpromazine and maintained with isoflurane in diluted oxygen. group 1 was induced with thiopental whereas group 2 with propofol. schirmer tear test 1 was performed before sedation (t0), 15 minutes after sedation (t1) and 10 minutes after induction of anesthesia (t2) with the drug chosen for one of the groups. there was a significant decrease in tear production for both drugs, but no significant statistical differences were found between them. thus, considering the results and the way in which the study was conducted, we suggest protecting the cornea and conjunctiva of patients during anesthesia using any of the drugs here evaluated.

Abstract: biocompatibility, osseointegration, and resorption of a 10% hydroxyapatite (hap-91?) - 90% polyhydroxybutyrate composite were analyzed after implantation in rabbits′ bone defects. clinical, radiographic, histologic and histomorphometric data were collected on the 8th, 45th, and 90th days after surgery and the results were compared to those of unfilled defects. no significant differences between groups for the evaluated clinical parameters existed. radiographs showed bone-composite direct contact. bone tissue was formed normally in the defect and at the composite-tissue interface when compared to the control. no inflammatory infiltrated was observed. for each sampling day, the percentages of bone were greater than those of connective tissues (p=0.001 on the 8th and 45th days and 0.022 on the 90th day) inside the defect. bone and connective tissues were seen at the interface with the composite, being the last one significantly greater than the first on the 90th day (p=0.004). composite's resorption signs were evident: giant cells on the surface of composite fragments separated from the original bloc. data support that such composite is biocompatible in rabbits, resorbable and integrate to bone.
Preserved xenogenic amniotic membrane as a patch on the repair of superficial corneal ulcers in rabbits

Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of canine amniotic membrane, previously preserved in glycerin, used as a patch on the repair of experimentally-made superficial corneal ulcers and to compare corneal epithelization between the treated and non-treated groups. xenogeneic amniotic membranes were collected aseptically and preserved in 99% glycerin at room temperature. each animal was anesthetized and submitted to superficial corneal keratectomy of the left eye. the treated group received a fragment of canine amniotic membrane as a patch, while the control group had no treatment. the treated group showed blepharospasm, ocular discharge and conjunctival congestion. the membrane accelerated corneal repair in the beginning of the process, however, it delayed its conclusion (p<0.05). treated eyes showed greater vessel formation and decreased corneal transparency (p<0.05). the stroma of the control group was thicker than that of the treated group (p<0.05). we suggest that amniotic membrane used in this manner can be applied as a therapy for superficial corneal ulcers in the beginning phases of the repair process.

Abstract: in this work, biocompatibility, osteointegration, osteoconductivity, and biodegradation of a hydroxyapatite polyhydroxybutyrate new composite were evaluated. the composite was implanted in rabbits' bone defects and clinical, radiographic, histological, and histomorphometric data of these animals were compared with those of unfilled defects on the days 8th, 45th, and 90th after surgery. no significant differences existed between the groups for the evaluated clinical parameters. radiographs showed bone-composite direct contact. bone formed within the defect, interface and inside the composite. significant differences were found between the bone and connective tissues percentage within the defect at all dates and at the interface on the 45th day, bone tissue prevailing. composite's biodegradation signs were evident: giant cells on the surface of composite fragments separated from the original block in the absence of inflammatory infiltrate. these data supported that such composite was biocompatible, biodegradable, osteoconductive and integrate to bone.
Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate in the repair of osteochondral defects in dogs - clinical-radiographic analysis

Abstract: among the proposed treatments to repair lesions of degenerative joint disease (djd), chondroprotective nutraceuticals composed by glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are a non-invasive theraphy with properties that favors the health of the cartilage. although used in human, it is also available for veterinary use with administration in the form of nutritional supplement independent of prescription, since they have registry only in the inspection service, which does not require safety and efficacy testing. the lack of such tests to prove efficacy and safety of veterinary medicines required by the ministry of agriculture and the lack of scientific studies proving its benefits raises doubts about the efficiency of the concentrations of such active substances. in this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a veterinary chondroprotective nutraceutical based on chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine in the repair of osteochondral defects in lateral femoral condyle of 48 dogs, through clinical and radiographic analysis. the animals were divided into treatment group (tg) and control group (cg), so that only the tg received the nutraceutical every 24 hours at the rate recommended by the manufacturer. the results of the four treatment times (15, 30, 60 and 90 days) showed that the chondroprotective nutraceutical, in the rate, formulation and administration at the times used, did not improve clinical signs and radiologically did not influence in the repair process of the defects, since the treated and control groups showed similar radiographic findings at the end of the treatments.
Middle cerebral artery revascularization: anatomical studies and considerations on the anastomosis site

Abstract: in the surgical management of skull base lesions and vascular diseases such as giant aneurysms, involvement of the internal carotid artery may require the resection or the occlusion of the vessel. the anastomosis of the external carotid artery and the middle cerebral artery with venous graft may be indicated to re-establish the blood flow. to determine the best suture site in the middle cerebral artery, an anatomical study was carried out. fourteen cerebral hemispheres were analysed after the injection of red latex into the internal carotid artery. the superior and inferior trunk of the main division of the middle cerebral artery have more than 2 mm of diameter. they are superficial allowing an anastomosis using a venous graft. the superior trunk has a disadvantage, it gives rise to branches for the precentral and post-central giri. the anastomosis with the inferior trunk presents lower risk of neurological deficit even though the angular artery originates from it.
ADJUSTMENT OF HAILWOOD AND HORROBIN SORPTION ISOTHERM PARAMETERS FOR WOOD

Abstract: The hygroscopicity of wood is one of the most important properties in the development of the drying process of this material. The determination of this property is many times disregarded because empirical equations are available to estimate the parameters of Hailwood and Horrobin sorption isotherm. This isotherm is one of the most popular way used to determine the wood equilibrium moisture content. The aim of this work is to show that the equilibrium moisture content must be experimentally determinated in a wider range of temperature and relative air humidity. The adjust of specific parameters for wood of a set of species or else to each specific specie reduced the errors in the estimated equilibrium moisture content. The equilibrium constant between hydrated and dissolved water was the parameter that showed greater differences. The effect of temperature was aimed to reduce the monomolecular adsorption, mostly until 60 °C. A higroscopicidade da madeira representa uma das propriedades mais importantes no desenvolvimento do processo de secagem desse material. A determina § £o desta propriedade muitas vezes desprezada pela disponibilidade de equa § μes emp -ricas que estimam os par ¢metros da isoterma de sor § £o proposta por Hailwood e Horrobin, que uma das mais utilizadas para estimar a umidade de equil -brio da madeira. O objetivo deste trabalho foi demonstrar que a umidade de equil -brio deve ser determinada experimentalmente em uma ampla faixa de temperatura e umidade relativa do ar. O ajuste dos par ¢metros espec -ficos para a madeira de um grupo de esp cies ou para cada esp cie individualmente reduziu o erro na estimativa da umidade de equil -brio. A constante de equil -brio entre a gua hidratada e dissolvida foi o par ¢metro que apresentou maiores diverg ancias. O efeito da temperatura foi no sentido de reduzir a adsor § £o monomolecular, especialmente at 60 °C.
LEVANTAMENTO E IDENTIFICA O DE CUPINS (INSECTA: ISOPTERA) EM áREA URBANA DE PIRACICABA - SP

Abstract: Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de fazer um estudo de ocorrência de cupins no Bairro S o Dimas, na cidade de Piracicaba, S o Paulo, realizando o levantamento e a identifica o das espécies de cupins presentes nas edifica es, visando a determinar as espécies de cupins mais freqüentes e a estabelecer a rela o entre ocorrência de cupins e a idade das edifica es. Os imóveis foram selecionados por amostragem, sendo que as espécies mais encontradas, infestando as edifica es foram: o cupim de madeira seca Cryptotermes brevis (Walker) e o cupim subterraneo Coptotermes havilandi (Holmgren). Constatou-se que o risco de infesta es por cupins, bem como número de focos por edifica o tendem a aumentar com a idade das constru es.

Abstract: A precis o das dimens es é uma característica que determina a qualidade de uma pe a de madeira. Um estudo, numa serraria localizada em Cachoeira do Sul, RS, foi realizado com o objetivo de quantificar a magnitude da média e da variancia das dimens es das pe as de madeira produzidas. A largura e a espessura das pe as produzidas por quatro tipos de serras foram avaliadas. Duas serras cortam as toras na largura e duas serras cortam na espessura. Foram calculadas as médias, variancias e os intervalos de confian a para a média e a variancia dentro e entre pe as das dimens es de largura e espessura. Os resultados mostram que o corte das pe as de madeira segue uma distribui o normal sem tendências
