Pereira, Andréa;Monteiro, Mário Luiz Ribeiro;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492003000400017
Abstract: purpose: to describe the unusual occurrence of unilateral proptosis associated with oculomotor palsy and blindness, caused by a giant pituitary adenoma. methods: the patient was submitted to clinical and ophthalmologic examination, visual field, magnetic resonance imaging and histopathological study after surgical intervention for the removal of the tumor. results: a 21-years-old woman had progressive bilateral visual loss, associated with proptosis and limitation of ocular motility of the left eye. visual field examination revealed a complete temporal hemianopsia in the right eye and no light perception in the left eye. magnetic resonance imaging showed a large tumor infiltrating the iii ventricule, cavernous sinus and orbital apex. the histopathological study revealed a pituitary adenoma producing prolactin and growth hormone without signs of malignancy. conclusions: this case is of interest not only because it documents the extremely rare occurrence of orbital involvement by a pituitary tumor but also because it emphasizes the need of an early diagnosis of invasive adenomas since such tumors not necessarily follow a benign clinical course despite their histologically benign nature.

Abstract: objectives: to review the literature on the (i) possible protective effect of physical activity on the incidence of depression, and (ii) on the efficacy of physical exercise as a therapeutic intervention in depression. methods: systematic review of isi, pubmed, lilacs and scielo articles in english and portuguese from january 1993 to may 2005 using the keywords "depression," "elderly," and "exercise." articles assessing the effect of physical exercise in the elderly with clinical diseases or that used depression scales only for initial diagnosis were excluded. results: we found 155 articles, 22 of which met the inclusion criteria. other eight studies were included after a manual search. cross-sectional studies (n = 8) used only self-evaluation questionnaires to measure the levels of physical activity. longitudinal studies (n = 22) also used digital pedometer, direct measurements of oxygen consumption and physical exercise as methodological intervention. the studies meeting the first objective pointed to an inverse relationship between physical activity and changes in levels of depression. the studies that used physical activity as a therapeutic intervention in depression found divergent results and pointed to the interference of physiological and psychological factors on this relation. conclusion: there are two aspects involved in the role of physical activity and exercise in the treatment of depression. depression decreases the practice of physical activities; physical activity may be useful in the treatment and prevention of depression in the elderly.
Effect of water restriction and sodium levels in the drinking water on broiler performance during the first week of life
Castro, Emilio Eduardo Cura;Penz Júnior, Ant?nio Mário;Ribeiro, Andréa Machado Leal;Sbrissia, André Fischer;
Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982009001100014
Abstract: a trial was carried out to evaluate the performance of female ross 308 broilers, from 1 to 21 days of age, submitted to 20% of water restriction (wr) or ad libitum water and four different sodium levels by adding nacl to the drinking water (0, 150, 300, or 450 ppm) from 1 to 7 days of age. a control group, with four replications (rep), housed one day before the beginning of the experiment, was used as reference for wr calculation. two commercial diets where fed from 1 to 7 days and from 8 to 21 days to all birds. the chicks were raised in battery cages. a randomized complete design, in a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement, with four replications/treatment and 14 birds/replicate, was applied. feed intake (fi), weight gain (wg) and feed conversion ratio (fcr) in the first week were influenced by wr. during this period, there was a significant interaction between factors, showing that in chicks not submitted to wr, water consumption increased with sodium levels. also, at 7 days of age, excreta and carcass dry matter contents were higher in wr animals. during the second week, wr continued to affect fi, but the previously wr broilers presented better fcr, higher wg, and water consumption than the non-wr broilers. mortality was not affected either by wr or sodium levels. at 21 days of age, except for fi, no significant differences were observed between restricted and non-restricted birds. sodium levels up to 450 ppm were not toxic to the birds. these results suggested that if optimal conditions are offered, broilers quickly overcome unfavorable circumstances to their growth.
Influência da restri??o de água e ra??o durante a fase pré-inicial no desempenho de frangos de corte até os 42 dias de idade
Soares, Lisiane Fernandes;Ribeiro, Andréa Machado Leal;Penz Júnior, Ant?nio Mário;Ghiotti, André;
Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982007000700017
Abstract: two experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of water and feed restriction during the pre-starter phase on the broilers performance and organs development (heart, liver, gizzard and intestines). in each experiment, a 480 males ross chicks was allotted to a five levels (0, 10, 20, 30 and 40%) of water or feed restriction during the first seven days of age. the broilers were fed with the same diet, in nutritional composition, in all treatments. with water or feed restriction, it was observed a linear reduction in the performance during de first seven days of age and reduction in absolute organs weight, however the relative weight (rw) was not affected, except for gizzard that increased with restriction. after 7 days of age, it was observed a compensatory gain of the broilers, over all in the subsequent week (8 to 14 days). at 42 days, the birds showed similar body weight independently of the type of restriction. in the birds under water restriction, the feed conversion in the period from 8 the 14 days of age was better birds submitted to previous restriction, while, among those under ration restriction, this difference did not occur. percentage of blood hematocrit linearly increased at 7 days of age with the increase of water restriction, and at three days of age with feed restriction. in both experiments there was no influence of the restrictions in the lot uniformity and in carcass and parts yield. the water intake was more independent than feed intake, therefore showed lower reduction when the birds were under feed restriction.

Ribeiro, Deise M.;Corrêa, Paulo C.;Furtado, Bruno F.;Goneli, André L. D.;Resende, Osvaldo;
Engenharia Agrícola , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-69162007000300019
Abstract: this work aimed to determine the effect of the soybean grain moisture content in the maximum compression force values for a fixed deformation (2 mm) and the proportional deformity modulus under different compression positions. soybean grains varying from 0.58 to 0.093 (d.b.) of moisture content were compressed uniaxialy between two parallel plates towards its three main dimensions under compression speed of 0.001 m s-1. according to the results it was concluded that the compression force and the proportional deformity modulus decrease with the increasing of the moisture content. also the soybean grains presented higher resistance to its compression when submitted to the repose position (p1) and presented similar compression force and proportional deformity modulus values when compressed in the position p2 (on the hilum) and p3 (in the vertical).
Neurocortical electrical activity tomography in chronic schizophrenics
Veiga, Heloisa;Deslandes, Andréa;Cagy, Mauricio;Fiszman, Adriana;Piedade, Roberto Airthon M.;Ribeiro, Pedro;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2003000500002
Abstract: functional imaging of brain electrical activity was performed in 25 chronic medicated schizophrenics and 40 controls, analyzing the classical frequency bands (delta, theta, alpha, and beta) of 19-channel eeg during resting state to identify brain regions with deviant activity of different functional significances, using loreta (low resolution tomography) and spm99 (statistical parametric mapping). patients differed from controls due to an excess of slow activity comprising delta + theta frequency bands (inhibitory pattern) located at the right middle frontal gyrus, right inferior frontal gyrus, and right insula, as well as at the bilateral anterior cingulum with a left preponderance. the high temporal resolution of eeg enables the specification of the deviations not only as an excess or a deficit of brain electrical activity, but also as inhibitory (delta, theta), normal (alpha), and excitatory (beta) activities. these deviations point out to an impaired functional brain state consisting of inhibited frontal and prefrontal areas that may result in inadequate treatment of externally or internally generated information.

Costa, Andréa M.;Ribeiro, Wanessa X.;Kato, Elaine;Monteiro, Antonio Roberto G.;Peralta, Rosane Marina;
Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-89132008000200021
Abstract: the production of tannase by aspergillus tamarii was studied in submerged cultures. the fungus produced an extracellular tannase after two days of growth in mineral medium containing tannic acid, gallic acid and methyl gallate as carbon source. the best result was obtained using gallic acid as inducer (20.6 u/ml). the production of enzyme was strongly repressed by the presence of glucose. crude enzyme was optimally active at ph 5.0 and 30o c. the enzyme was stable in a large range of ph and up to the temperature of 45o c.

Ribeiro, Deise M.;Corrêa, Paulo C.;Rodrigues, Diana H.;Goneli, André L. D.;
Ciência e Tecnologia de Alimentos , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-20612005000300035
Abstract: the present work was accomplished with the objective of evaluating the drying effect on soy grain physical properties and to analyze different methodologies for determining bulk density and specific gravity. also, the soy grain shrinkage was evaluated during the drying and different mathematical models were fitted to the experimental data in order to analyze the properties in connection with their moisture content. based on the obtained results it can be concluded that the reduction in the moisture content promotes the linear decrease in the porosity in the range from 0,31 to 0,15 (b.s.) and increase of both the bulk density and specific gravity. also the soy grain bulk density and specific gravity values found through the grain chemical composition were lower than the experimental data. the adapted bala & woods [2], rahman, linear and exponential models are appropriate for description of the soy bulk grain shrinkage, while only the adapted bala & woods [2] model is the most appropriate for description of the soy unitary grain shrinkage.

Abstract: it was studied the effect of soybean meal (sbm) composition, varying in cp (sbm44%, sbm46% and sbm48%), on performance, metabolism and intestinal micrometry of broilers. three sbm were produced from the sbm with 48.4% cp and increasing levels of toasted soybean hulls. three hundred and twelve birds were assigned to three treatments with eight replicates. the diets were formulated for three periods: 1 to 7 days, 8 to 21 days and 22 to 42 days of age. all dietary treatments were isoenergy and isoprotein. from 1 to 7 days of age, no treatment effect on bird performance was observed. however, from 8 to 21 days of age, the birds fed sbm48% showed the best weight gain (wg) and feed conversion (fc). in the period from 1 to 21 days of age, the broilers fed sbm48% showed higher body weight and wg and better fc than those fed sbm44%. in the period from 22 to 42 days of age, the birds on all dietary treatments showed similar performance. the metabolism parameters evaluated at both periods (3 to 7 and 39 to 42 days of age) showed that the sbm48% treatment promoted a significantly higher coefficient of metabolizability of ge and dm than sbm44% treatment. no treatment effect on villi height, cript depth and number of intestinal villi was observed.
