Abstract:

Considered rare tumors, gangliogliomas account for 0.4% - 0.9% of intracranial neoplasms. The peak of its incidence occurs between 10 and 20 years of age. These tumors are composed of glial and ganglion cells and they are relatively low-grade neoplasms associated with good prognoses. We report a case of an atypical calcified ganglioglioma in an 18-year-old woman with history of four months of stabbing right-sided parietal headache, paroxysmal. On image studies were noted the presence of thick wall calcification in gangliogliomas. Although rare, this atypical ganglioglioma should be included in the differential diagnosis of lesions occurring in this area of the brain.

Abstract: objective: to review the literature on the role of calcium, phosphorus and trace elements in the nutrition of extremely low birth weight infants, considering their importance for metabolism, bone mineralization and as dietary components. sources of data: medline, the cochrane database of systematic reviews and books on nutrition were searched between 1994 and 2004. original research studies and reviews were selected. summary of the findings: extremely preterm infants are frequently growth-restricted at hospital discharge as a consequence of difficulties in the provision of adequate nutrition. the long-term effects of this growth restriction need to be determined. there is a paucity of studies about the role of minerals, especially micronutrients, in the nutrition of extremely preterm infants. the principal focus of this review was on calcium and phosphorus metabolism, bone mineralization and parenteral and enteral supplementation. a critical evaluation of post-discharge nutrition and its influence upon growth and bone mineralization was presented. selenium and zinc requirements and the role of selenium as an antioxidant with possible effects on free radical diseases of the preterm infant were discussed. extremely preterm infants have low mineral reserves and, as a consequence, may have deficiencies in the postnatal period if they do not receive parenteral or enteral supplementation. more studies are needed to elucidate the actual requirements and the appropriate supplementation of micronutrients. there are controversies about the outcome and the influence of post-discharge nutrition on bone disease of prematurity.

Abstract: the teaching of natural sciences in secundary schools in brazil, still made in a descriptive way with excess of terminologies, contributing to reinforce just encyclopedic and theoric teaching, stimulating the passivity, and presenting as main objective the vestibular exam, that requires irrelevants and fragmentary knowledge. the nacional curriculars parameters to the secundary schools suggests the adoption of methodologies of active and interactive learning that permit the students their emancipation. this way, escaping from the tradicional models of teaching, was created an educational cd-rom about the sergipe fossils, this resource has as main objective, transmit to the students of secundary schools the contents about paleontology and sergipe fossils in a ludic and interactive way.

Abstract: for those restricts tags about caves in didactic books, and knowledge from teachers and students about bioespeleology of sergipe, was elaborated a cd-rom based on preview knowledge of a public school students from sergipe′s interior (brazil) about bioespeleology. to build an education subject was given a quiz with questions referring to bioespeleology, those ones was analyzed for check the presence of basic content about this topic, such as myths and untwisted knowledge. the cd-rom was elaborated with the powerpoint software with videos/documentaries, photos, pictures and hypertexts which can be accessed by the order and time that the user wants it. this didactic resource can be used to support the significant learning process for the students, because it is a tool from the considerate "new technology" and become as a dynamic supply instead of dull and traditional classes, however, its construction brings protection from many ways, for individual and group use, to a scientific knowledge formation.

Abstract: teaching science to deaf-mute children has several limitations. in recent years, some techniques and resources have been presented to this public. however, many approaches still have to be done. the contact of these students with science is made preferably by learning through the language of signals. the main objective of the present work is to encourage the use of the "tale and box" methodology as an efficient way to apply scientific knowledge for deaf-mute children. the tale was about ema (deaf-mute children) and her friends learning the importance of paleontology and fossils through the visit of a paleontologist to their school. the story was written in portuguese language, which was translated and adapted to the brazilian sign language - libras. the story has been implemented in some classes of a deaf-mute care entity in aracaju (sergipe state, northeast brazil). such approach proved to be a valuable methodological tool on transmission of scientific information to deafmute children.
