Brazil and the economic, political, and environmental multilateralism: the Lula years (2003-2010)
Visentini, Paulo G. Fagundes;Silva, André Luiz Reis da;
Revista Brasileira de Política Internacional , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-73292010000300004
Abstract: this article discusses brazil's multilateral policy under luiz inácio lula da silva's administration, highlighting economic, political and environmental themes. the main argument is that brazil's multilateral relations during this government reached a new significance with the reinforcement of international coalitions and the articulation with the country's new development model. the country has been using multilateral forums as a way to achieve international projection and support for its development project, highlighting bargaining aspects, variable geometry coalitions and the strengthening of south-south cooperation
Batch and fixed-bed column biosorption of manganese ion by Sargassum filipendula

Electronic Journal of Biotechnology , 2011,
Abstract: this paper presents experimental data of the biosorption of manganese onto sargassum filipendula in both batch and fixed-bed column systems. batch equilibrium data were used for nonlinear fittings of the langmuir and freundlich isotherms. a mathematical model based on mass balances in the fluid and in the sorbent was applied to represent the experimental fixed-bed column data. the utilization of isotherm parameters from the batch experiments in the breakthrough model implied a significant mismatch in relation to the laboratory data. alternatively, additional fixed-bed column data provided new parameters for the isotherm evaluation, and the corresponding simulated profile of the breakthrough curve reached better agreement to the experimental results.
Productive performance of broiler breeder hens fed 25-hydroxycholecalciferol
Torres, Cibele Araujo;Vieira, Sergio Luiz;Reis, Renata Nuernberg;Ferreira, André Klein;Silva, Pedro Xavier da;Furtado, Fulvio Vinicius Foch;
Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982009000700018
Abstract: an experiment was carried out with the objective of evaluating the addition of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25(oh) d3) in diets of broiler breeder hens. the experiment used cobb 500 broiler breeder hens and was allotted to a complete randomized design with four treatments and eight replications of twenty females and two males each. the treatments consisted of vitamin premixes with 2,000 and 3,400 iu/kg diet vitamin d3 as the only source of vitamin or 2,000 iu d3 plus 35 or 69 mg/t of 25(oh) d3. results of this experiment indicated that 25(oh) d3 had no significant effect on egg production parameters from 32 to 67 weeks. the supplementation of 25(oh) d3 resulted in better quality egg shells evaluated by the specific gravity at 60 weeks of age, regardless of the dosage. no significant differences were observed for hatchability of broiler breeder fertile eggs at 54 and 64 weeks. at 64 weeks, the hatch residue breakout showed less embryo mortality at the third week for treatments receiving 2,000 ui d3 in the diet and less embryo mortality at the second week of development from hens aged 67 weeks and supplemented with 2,000iu d3 and 2,000iu d3+ 69 mg 25(oh)d3. it was concluded that the supplementation with 25-hydroxycholecalciferol with cholecalciferol had similar effects as the diets with vitamin d3 as the only source on the productive performance of broiler breeder hens.

Souza, Gilberto Gon?alves de;Pereira, Adamastor Humberto;Costa, Luiz Francisco Machado da;Gassen, Edson;Nhuch, Cláudio;Renosto, Régis;Schier, André Silvio;Souza, Leonardo Reis de;
Jornal Vascular Brasileiro , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1677-54492005000300009
Abstract: objective: to test sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of the modified upright valsalva's test described by the authors for diagnosing the reflux, when compared to phlebography, which is used as gold standard. method: one hundred sixty one patients with chronic venous insufficiency (c4, 5 or 6epasdppr) were prospectively examined. the patients were submitted to hemodynamic evaluation, including the standard supine valsalva's test and the new modified upright valsalva's test. descending phlebography was used as a gold standard, to which the hemodynamic tests were compared. a roc curve (receiver operator characteristic) was plotted to determine the upper limit of normality for the new test. the observed sensitivity, specificity and accuracy values of each test were compared using dunn's test. the significance level of 5% was adopted. results: the standard supine valsalva's test reached a sensitivity of 65%, specificity of 81% and accuracy of 66%, whereas the upright valsalva's test reached a sensitivity of 80% (p < 0.01), specificity of 63% (p = 0.43) and accuracy of 78% (p < 0.05). conclusion: the modification in the valsalva's test proposed by the authors seems to determine better sensitivity and accuracy without significant decrease in specificity, proving to be useful in reflux evaluation of chronic venous insufficiency.
