Carotid transient ischemic attacks presenting as limb-shaking syndrome: report of two cases
Kowacs, Pedro A.;Troiano, André R.;Mendona, Célio Teixeira;Teive, Hélio A.G.;Werneck, Lineu C.;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2004000200027
Abstract: limb shaking syndrome (lss) is a rare presentation of transient ischemic attacks (tias), usually secondary to a critical carotid stenosis compromising intracranial circulation, first described 40 years ago. two additional cases are described herein, aiming to add on to previous descriptions, and to warn physicians about this potentially harming and rather uncommon condition.

Structure and properties of brazilian peat: analysis by spectroscopy and microscopy
Rom?o, Luciane P. C.;Lead, Jamie R.;Rocha, Julio C.;Oliveira, Luciana Camargo de;Rosa, André H.;Mendona, André G. R.;Ribeiro, Adauto de Souza;
Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-50532007000400008
Abstract: peat was taken from the sergipe state, brazil and characterized by several techniques: elemental and thermal analyses; fourier infrared (ftir) and solid state 13c nuclear magnetic resonance (nmr) spectroscopies; scanning electron microscopy (sem), environmental scanning electron microscopy (esem) and x-ray diffractometry (xrd). also, the sergipe state peat samples were compared with other peat sample from later from sao paulo state, brazil. the lowest o/c and e4/e6 ratios and differential thermal analysis (dta) curves of the santo amaro (sao) sample indicated that this sample had the highest degree of decomposition. ftir results showed that itabaiana (ita) and s?o paulo (sap) samples presented more prominent peak at 1086 cm-1 attributed the presence of si-o than sao sample spectra. the sao sample showed two more intense peaks at 2920 cm-1 and 2850 cm-1. these results were corroborated by 13c nmr and thermal gravimetric (tg) where the relative abundance of the alkyl-c groups was greater in the sao sample. the x-ray diffractometry (xrd) of sao sample is characteristic of amorphous matter however, the sap and ita samples revealed the large presence of quartz mineral. the scanning electron microscopy (sem) and environmental scanning electron microscopy (esem) showed that the surface of peat samples have porous granules of organic material. the ita and sap peat samples are alike while sao peat sample is richer in organic material. only the sao sample has truthful characteristics of peat. the results of this study showed that the samples are very different due to variable inorganic and organic material contents.
Causas Excludentes

Principia : an International Journal of Epistemology , 2000,
Abstract: We defend J. Kim's principle of explanatory exclusion from a recent criticism advanced by A Marras. We show that the principle follows from a less controversial principle of causal exclusion together with the assumption that claims of explanation are factual. We resolve the tension produced by Marras' argument by drawing a distinction between causal and explanatory relevance. In cross-level explanations (mental-to-physical and physical-to-mental) the explanans property is not causally but explanatorily relevant to the explanandum. This calls for an account of how explanatorily relevant properties are grounded in causally relevant properties which in turn ultimately depend on causally efficacious properties. A

In this article I analyze the thought of Thomas Kuhn in the light of the idea that his work has reopened discussions on the relationship between science and society. In fact, his work The structure of scientific revolutions, published in 1962, had an impact that left indelible marks on the debates about scientific practice. As a consequence, two side effects arose: One of them leading the way to extremely technical matters and, somehow, unproductive. The other intensified the discussion concerning the place that science has - or should have - in society. My main argument is that the second effect was originated unconsciously by Kuhn. In other words, Kuhn can be seen as the generator of an involuntary liberation, because, regardless of his wishes, he reopened discussion of the science/society relationship. Thus, he can be pointed to as the major source of inspiration for the strong program and, subsequently, for science studies. Therefore, it is important to reevaluate his main theses in order to cast light on issues related to the interaction between rational factors and social values.

Abstract: along several years, at the laboratory of plant bacteriology and biological control of the department of plant pathology of the federal university of vi?osa, thousands of prokaryote isolates have been obtained from the rhizosphere, rhizoplane and phylloplane of economically important plants. every obtained isolate is tested as biocontrol agents. as expected, the majority does not show any biocontrol potentiality and is discarded. few are selected through time-consuming experimental biocontrol trials in greenhouse and field. even being selected mainly for their ability to induce resistance in target plants, many of them constitutively express mechanisms of antagonism against pathogens that seem to be part of their performance while biocontrol agents.

Agricultural Sciences (AS) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/as.2015.61015
Abstract: The diagnosis of boron deficiency in coconut palms has been hampered by lack of information about its distribution in the plant. Two experiments were conducted, one in a greenhouse to induce boron deficiency in dwarf green coconut palms, and other in the field, in which the plants received doses of boric acid, B(OH)3. The objective was to verify symptoms of boron deficiency and boron content variation in canopy, leaves and folioles (or leaflets). Boron deficient plants led leaves and folioles to become deformed. The deficient and sufficient contents of boron varied significantly in the canopy, but did not vary in leaves. The boron content increased significantly from bottom to the apex of the folioles in both treatments. To survey the level of boron in the coconut palm, the ideal is, using samples taken from the youngest leaf, to calculate the relation between the boron content in the apex of the foliole and the content in the center or in the folioles bottom, with minimum values 2.2 or 2.7, respectively.
Rediscovery of the syntypes of Corydoras meridionalis R. von Ihering, 1911 (Teleostei, Siluriformes, Callichthyidae) and designation of lectotype
Britski, Heraldo A.;Mendona, André L.C.;
Papéis Avulsos de Zoologia (S?o Paulo) , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0031-10492010000800001
Abstract: syntypes of corydoras meridionalis rodolpho von ihering, 1911, once regarded as lost, were recently found in the collection of fishes of the museu de zoologia da usp. the syntypes had been identified as c. ehrhardti steindachner, 1910, currently considered a senior synonym of that species. examination of the rediscovered syntypes corroborates the proposed synonymy. data on the syntypes are presented and compared with information in the original descriptions of c. ehrhardti and c. meridionalis; a few discrepancies found are discussed. a lectotype is designated for c. meridionalis and a photograph of the specimen is provided.
