Abstract: eugenia malaccensis l. (syzygium malaccensis merr. & perry), popularly known in brazil as jambo vermelho, is a very common tree and one of the medicinal plants of alagoas state, brazil. previous chemical studies with e. malaccensis have been carried out with native plants from asia, oceania, and central america. this work describes the chemical study of e. malaccensis l., a specimen collected in alagoas state. considering that studies on the molluscicidal and larvicidal potential of e. malaccensis were not reported, this work aimed to test its molluscicidal activity against biomphalaria glabrata snails and larvicidal activity against aedes aegypti mosquitos. the ethanolic stem bark and leaf extracts were inactive towards aedes aegypti larvae. the ethanolic stem bark and leaf extract were active against biomphalaria glabrata with cl50 = 42.53 and 41.90 mg/ml, respectively. 5,7,3',4',5'-penta-hydroxy-flavonol (1), 5,7,3',5'-tetra-hydroxy-4'-methoxy-flavonol (2), 3,4,5-tri-hydroxybenzoic acid (3) and 3-acetyl-urs-12-en-28-oic acid (4) were isolated and identified from the leaves and stem bark. the acid 3b-o-acetyl-urs-12-en-28-oic is for the first time isolated from the genus eugenia. the structures of the compounds have been established by ir, 1h and 13c nmr spectral analysis and by comparison with literature data.

Abstract: This is a retrospective study on gigantomastia correction in obesity facing the technique of nipple-areolar grafts and its complexity. The main question is the technical-surgical care during its execution aiming to achieve reparative results that can return to these women the desire to live with better quality of life and health. Method: We performed a retrospective study of all obese patients with severe gigantomastia who underwent reduction mammaplasty with an operative technique using the superior pedicle, with special care for the nipple-papillary grafts. The study was carried out at a single institution between 2001 and 2013, in a total of 30 cases. This operative technique was presented at first time in 1980, with no changes up to now. We emphasized the perfect decortication of the areola and nipples until they were translucent after the maneuvers of Schwartzman and subsequent grafts operated in both breasts. Results: Results were considered satisfactory, from the reparative and aesthetic point of view, emphasizing the degree of improvement observed in women undergoing technique. Discussion: We can say that during all this time of aesthetic and therapeutic-restorative surgery, due to its realization in a single surgical time, there was big impact on the aesthetics of patients and on their families, even taking into account possible complications in the post-operative. Conclusion: The superior pedicle technique, performed as described here, is a safe and reliable procedure in patients with severe gigantomastia.

Abstract: this article aims at identifying elements that affect the decision firms make in what concerns productive capacity setting in markets. among these elements, macroeconomic, regulatory and competition factors are highlighted. in this paper, a case study for the domestic scheduled airline industry is developed, taking advantage of the particularity of this sector, in which an airline ought to decide capacities in each sub-market (pair of airports) where it is present. by using a three-dimensional panel of data (airline-market-time), we propose an identification of this decision-making process. among the final results, it can be highlighted that: 1. macroeconomic aggregates such as gdp and exchange rate have significant impact over the decision process of capacity setting; 2. liberalizing measures adopted in 2001 and lasting for the two following years had little impact over seat supply; 3. the commercial agreement the two biggest brazilian airlines signed in 2003 did impact the market capacity, what shows that stronger market dominance influences the decision airlines make in what concerns their supply, a result justifying an increased surveillance to be undertaken by antitrust authorities.

Abstract: the construct perceived risk was introduced in the marketing literature in 1960 and since then has been the object of interest of researchers. along with this theme, research on risk reduction strategies - rrss were aimed at understanding how individuals react when faced with a situation of risk. this article was based on the work of roselius, 1971, in which the author sought to identify the average percentage of preference or "net favorable percentage - nfp" of certain individuals by rrss. a scenario of online sales of hotel services was used in order to account for the score obtained for each of the eleven strategies used in the original study namely endorsements, brand loyalty, major brand image, private testing, store image, free sample, money-back guarantee, government testing, shopping, expensive models and word-of-mouth. the research was characterized by being quantitative and descriptive and it was performed on a single cross-section with a non-probabilistic sample. data collection was performed with the use of a likert scale of five points, the subjects being selected by the technique of half-ball snow. the results indicate that individuals are in favor of use of strategies to reduce the risks they perceive, but they vary in determining the degree of preference assigned to them.

The construct Perceived Risk was introduced in the marketing literature in 1960 and since then has been the object of interest of researchers. Abstract: 577 registers of bottom-hole temperature (bht) from 207 wells distributed throughout the rec?ncavo, camamu, almada, cumuruxatiba and jequitinhonha sedimentary basins, bahia-brazil, were corrected to obtain true temperatures of the formations. the methodology used to correct these temperatures consisted in using the eq.(1) numerically resolved as the data set shows two or more registers of temperatures at the same depth (exponential integral method) and in application of the time-depth scheme as we had only one temperature registered per depth. the corrections obtained by the two methods show that the formation static temperatures are 5 to 20oc greater than the non-corrected ones. we tested the validity of the time-depth scheme applying the empirical equation developed in this work on the multiple temperature registers taking the higher ones among them. the average geothermal gradient within the basins, obtained with the temperatures corrected by that method, presents a discrepancy of only 2,8% as compared to the one obtained with the corrected data by the exponential integral method, shows that it is a valid method to correct temperatures in the basins studied. the mean geothermal gradient obtained with corrected bhts within all basins was (27,9 ±2,1) × 10-3 oc m-1.

Abstract: This paper describes the implementation of a platform based on reconfigurable architecture and on concepts of virtual instrumentation and its application to the hands-free driving problem. The novelty of this approach is the use of both reconfigurable systems (for developing the car’s controller) and virtual instrumentation issues for developing a high-level abstraction testing and simulation environment. The implemented platform permits (a) to control directly the real vehicle using control commands that are sent using a keyboard and (b) to simulate the control process in a virtual environment, using a virtual instrumentation approach. The car control system was developed in a microcontroller with several peripheral embedded in a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The communication between the FPGA-based control system and the car is accomplished through an electronic module, which comprises several insulating and power circuit boards. The virtual instrumentation approach (for simulation and controller design objectives) was used for implementing a high-level abstraction simulation environment in LabVIEW tool, which allows representing the movement of the car in real time. The communication between the simulator and the controller is accomplished through a serial interface in which a RS-232 based protocol was implemented. The user can send commands to the control system through a keyboard with a PS2 interface. This approach opens a great variety of possibilities to validate and simulate solutions for several problems in robotic and mechatronic areas. The tests and initial overall system validation were accomplished in the simulator environment. Then, the simulation results were compared with the movement variables of the real car, which were gathered in real time. This approach makes possible to test and to validate the control system with low cost and more safety.

Abstract: this paper develops a systematic design procedure based on discrete decoupling by state feedback applied to three-phase pwm rectifiers. a discrete model for synchronous frame is developed for three-phase pwm rectifier with an l filter. this model takes into account the computational delays presents in the discrete implementation. deadbeat response is obtaining without the requirement of a current controller in the axis d. moreover, discrete servo controllers to ensure unit displacement power factor and regulated dc link voltage are developed. finally, experimental results are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed procedure, algorithms and the performance of the overall system.

Abstract: the aim of the present study was to compare orthodontic treatment results of class ii division 1 patients treated in one or two phases (early treatment). the sample was randomly composed by 72 class ii patients (31 males and 41 female), treated by six private orthodontists. the observed mean age was 12 (sd = 2.47) and 9.62 years old (sd= 1.51), respectively for the one phase (n=36) and the two phase treatment group (n=36). the mean initial cephalometric and par index values for both study groups were compared using the student t-test, with no significant difference between them, demonstrating initial severity equivalence of the cases. the final orthodontic evaluation was done by only one calibrated operator, using the par index (peer assessment rating) on study models. results didn't show any statistical differences among the groups (p=0.647), with mean par reduction rate evaluated in 83% and 85% for one and two phase group respectively. the mean treatment time was 43.1 months for the two phase and 35 months for the one phase group (statistically significant, p=0,0158). the more severe was the case, the longer they would take to be finished, but no correlation was found between the duration of intervention, patient gender with the final quality result. although the present study failed to show significant differences between mean orthodontic results, further studies should be carried in order to identify more accurately which are the patients that would really benefit from class ii early treatment.
