Abstract: the authors present in this paper three types of data on mental disorders: prevalence rates in representative samples, prevalence rates (primary data) in a family study and the indicators of diagnostics' proportion among the patients admitted to brazilian psychiatric hospitals. concerning to one survey carried out over representative samples, the overall prevalence rate was 20%, of which, 3.0%, 14.6%, 0. 7%, 1.1%, and 0.5% were due respectively to alcoholism, neurosis, psychosis, mental deficiency, and organic brain syndrome. the sex distribution has shown an overt but expected excess of alcoholism among the males, and neurosis among the females. in one study related to the original family (parents and siblings) of 150 heavy drug abusers, the overall prevalence rate of mental disorders among 796 relatives of these 150 drug users was 23.2%, of which, 8.4%, 5.3%, 3.1%, 4.0%, 0.8%, 0.9%, and 0.8% were respectively due to alcohol related problems, drug addiction, psychosis, neurosis, epilepsy, antisocial personality and other diagnosis. the alcohol related problems were by far the most frequent among the fathers, drug addiction among the siblings, and neurosis among the mothers of those 150 index-patients. the characteristics of brazil's psychiatric facilities are partially viewed by means of first admittion's indicator, at psychiatric wards. the proportion through the diagnosis is provided in a time-distribution table from 1940 to 1977. such data shows that the first admittion rate has increased in the last four decades; the most frequent diagnosis have been schizophrenia, alcoholism and drug addiction. however, between the diagnostic profile of public hospitals and that of private ones, there is an outstanding difference. the former with an increased amount of serious disorders, while the latter shows a great number of lighters ones. such findings are discussed with an aim of helping mental health planning.

Abstract: the objective of this study was to characterize the morphology of the fruits, seeds and seedlings of two tree species of the leguminosae mimosoideae, which grow naturally in sergipe state, for taxonomic purposes and for studies on the natural recovery and restoration of riparian forests. the morphological characteristics of angico [anadenanthera colubrina (vellozo) brenan] and tamboril [enterolobium contortisiliquum (vellozo) morong] have been described and illustrated. the fruits were collected by pruning 5 donor trees, at least 50 m distant from each other. the morphometric and the external and internal morphological characteristics of the fruits and seeds and the external seedling and nursery plant characteristics were evaluated. a. colubrina has dry, dehiscent fruits whereas e. contortisiliquum fruits are dry and indehiscent. both species have a pleurogram and are not albuminous. the characters of the embryo and the epigeal-phanerocotylar germination are similar to those observed in the caesalpinioideae. in the seedlings, the presence of extrafloral glandular nectaries on the rachis in a. colubrina and lenticels in e. contortisiliquum aid in the identification. the presence of root nodules in e. contortisiliquum and a tuberous root in a. colubrina are essential for species differentiation. it is concluded that the internal and external structures of the fruits and seeds and the external morphology of the seedlings will allow quick and accurate identification, providing a basis for studies with these species in the laboratory, nursery or field.

Abstract: the knowledge of morphological characters of seedlings is very important to laboratory studies, to seedlings production in nursery and to evaluate the natural regeneration, aiding to recognize and identify the species. the objectives of this study were to describe and illustrate the external morphological aspects of seedlings of trema (trema micrantha (l) blum.) - ulmaceae, to taxonomy identifying. the method used was efficient to promote the recognizing of species by external characters, aiding to evaluation in laboratory, identify the species in nursery and to natural regeneration studies. aspects like germination phaneroctyl and philotaxy modification of first leaves were the most important.
Restri??o hídrica em sementes de Jenipapo (Genipa americana L.)
Santos, Allívia Rouse Ferreira dos;Silva-Mann, Renata;Ferreira, Robério Anastácio;
Revista árvore , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-67622011000200006
Abstract: the jenipapo is a native species from latin america, belonging to the rubiaceae family and presents great timber value and alimentary, being exploited without conservation strategies. this study aimed to evaluate the water restriction effect, using two methodologies for the genipa americana l. seeds germination. the first methodology was performed with immersed seeds in polyethylene glycol solutions (peg 6000) for 18 days at 0.0, -0.1, -0.3, and -0.4 mpa at 20° c, simulating the flooding conditions. after this period, the seeds were disposed to germinate in petri dishes with germitest paper, blotter paper type, moistened with water. the second methodology used the same osmotic potential, damping the blotter paper type to simulate the fluid restriction. a completely randomized design was used with four replications of 25 seeds. for the immersed seeds in peg solutions, the potential -0.3 mpa allowed the osmotic conditioning, while the -0.4 mpa interfered in vigor. in imbibed seeds in paper there was a germination reduction, because the time, until potential events were not observed from -0.3 mpa.

Abstract: some new approaches on the use of epidemiology were concisely reviewed in this paper. firstly, the importance of the health consequences of socio-economic factors, which have increased in epidemiologic research, and decreased too much in studies from the clinical research area. the population's health state evaluation was then discussed, when was remarked that without operational indicators of positive health that evaluation is necessarily limited. attention was also paid to progress in methods, from which two epidemiologic approaches have been developed. in one of them rigour in methods and in data analysis by computer are endlessly searched for, while health solve-problem is focused in the other. therefore, epidemiology cannot be separated from social, economic and behavior sciences, which altogether may achieve that goal.

Motta, Marcelo Souza;Davide, Antonio Claudio;Ferreira, Robério Anastácio;
Revista Brasileira de Sementes , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-31222006000200002
Abstract: the objective of this research was to evaluate the seed viability of mutamba (g. ulmifolia) at different times of burying and depth in the soil in an induced soil seed bank. a randomized block design was used in a 3 x 3 factorial scheme with four plots. the treatments used were three soils depths (0, 2 and 4cm) and three times (3, 4 and 5 months after burying). each plot had 500 seeds in a bag (10x10cm) buried in nursery soil. the evaluations were seed viability with intact seed, using germination tests, obtaining the number of root emergences, normal seedlings and hard seeds. further, the number of losses in the soil seed bank were evaluated. the results obtained showed that the mutamba seeds (g. ulmifolia) could stay viable in the soil seed bank after 5 months (25% of total seed buriying showing 72% viability). seeds on the soil surface and 2cm deep had better average of root emergence and normal seedling percentage than that 4cm deep. the percentage of losses in soil seed bank is 61%, regardless of depth or time.
