Gap Fraction Estimates over Selectively Logged Forests in Western Amazon  [PDF]

Abstract: Gap fraction is a biophysical variable related to energy balance, forest fauna, micro-climate and regeneration, and is an important indicator of forest management quality. The objective of this study was to compare gap fraction estimates from undisturbed forests and different environments or strata of selectively logged areas. Moreover, gap fraction measurements were collected with two distinct instruments (optical canopy analyzer LAI-2000 and hemispherical photographs). Field data were collected from two sustainable forest management sites at Jamari National Forest, Rondonia State, Brazilian Amazon. Our results indicated significant differences between data acquired using these two instruments. For instance, the LAI-2000 data showed greater variation for each environment compared to hemispherical photographics data, and the data were also more sensitive to the increase in gap fraction. Small variations were found in the gap fraction means for the two study areas, and only data for the undisturbed area were significantly different. A gradient of increasing gap fraction that ranged from primary forests to log decks was observed. Furthermore, a multiple linear regression analysis determined the contribution of the selectively logged environments to decreased forest cover, confirming the observed gradient.

Abstract: Sound Recognition becomes an important tool for intrusion detection or for the monitoring of public premises exposed to personal hostility. It could further identify different sounds. The main idea of the sound recognition process in a security system is to store samples of different sound signals in the memory of the computer as references,?and?to be analyzed with respect to their frequencies components. In this paper, the sound signal of an unknown source would be analyzed and compared with all the available reference samples,?and?then recognition is made according to the closest sample. The developed security system consists of two main parts: the spectrum analyzer that converts the sound signal to spectrograms. It is designed based on the real-time analyzes, and the recognizer which compares the spectrograms and gives the decision of the recognition by using a special criterion. Experimental results prove that the accuracy of the proposed system can be 98.33% for the selected sample of signals.

Abstract: this study aims to recommend specifications for defibrillator and cardioverter analyzers, such as maximum permissible measurement error, resolution, operating conditions and desirable features. the recommendations are based on the test requirements from the abnt nbr iec 60601-2-4:2005 and ansi/aami df80:2003 standards. an evaluation of the specifications provided by four imported analyzers (fluke qed 6, fluke impulse 7000, mtk-biomed delta 3000 mkii and netech delta 3000) and two brazilian analyzers (transmai jm-01 and ourox jau-110) has also been performed, and several problems were found with specifications of those analyzers. these problems range from unsupplied data to less than desirable conditions for a defibrillator and cardioverter analyzer. the most serious problems encountered are related to the lack of specifications such as precision, accuracy, maximum permissible measurement error or other specifications that would help determine the coverage interval of the measure, an unacceptable mistake for a measurement instrument. other problems were related to measurement error and operating conditions not complying with the requirements of the abnt nbr iec 60601-2-4:2005 and the ansi/aami df80:2003 standards.

Abstract: Due to the fast development of electronic devices, the digital circuit designing takes up more and more percentage in total electronic developments thus in the process of debugging and doing validation in a digital system, one of the common task a designer need to do is the acquisition of digital waveforms. The waveforms can be captured by the device Logic Analyzer. As digital circuit is too fast to be observed by a human being, the basic idea to capture waveforms at higher speed is to implement the design using ARM controller which internally uses RISC Machine unlike simple processors. ARM based embedded systems, providing a low-cost solution to meet the request of flexibility and testability Logic analyzer is a dedicated application The main objective is to use module as powerful Lab equipment to check and verify the design under test (digital circuit) for design and verification engineers with smaller size and less expensive.

Abstract: Word stemming is one of the most important factors that affect the performance of many natural language processing applications such as part of speech tagging, syntactic parsing, machine translation system and information retrieval systems. Computational stemming is an urgent problem for Arabic Natural Language Processing, because Arabic is a highly inflected language. The existing stemmers have ignored the handling of multi-word expressions and identification of Arabic names. We used the enhanced stemming for extracting the stem of Arabic words that is based on light stemming and dictionary-based stemming approach. The enhanced stemmer includes the handling of multiword expressions and the named entity recognition. We have used Arabic corpus that consists of ten documents in order to evaluate the enhanced stemmer. We reported the accuracy values for the enhanced stemmer, light stemmer, and dictionary-based stemmer in each document. The results obtain shows that the average of accuracy in enhanced stemmer on the corpus is 96.29%. The experimental results showed that the enhanced stemmer is better than the light stemmer and dictionary-based stemmer that achieved highest accuracy values.

Abstract: Compiler is a program whose functionality is to translate a computer program written in source language into an equivalent machine code. Compiler construction is an advanced research area because of its size and complexity. The source codes are in higher level languages which are usually complex and, consequently, increase the level of abstraction. Due to such reasons, design and construction of error free compiler is a challenge of the twenty first century. Verification of a source program does not guarantee about correctness of code generated because the bugs in compiler may lead to an incorrect target program. Therefore, verification of compiler is more important than verifying the source programs. Lexical analyzer is a main phase of compiler used for scanning input and grouping into sequence of tokens. In this paper, formal construction of deterministic finite automata (DFA) based on regular expression is presented as a part of lexical analyzer. At first, syntax tree is described based on the augmented regular expression. Then formal description of important operators, checking nullability and computing first and last positions of internal nodes of the tree is described. In next, the transition diagram is described from the follow positions and converted into deterministic finite automata by defining a relationship among syntax tree, transition diagram and DFA. Formal specification of the procedure is described using Z notation and model analysis is provided using Z/Eves toolset.

Abstract: 10 different species of water mites which are Georgella helvetica, Eylais extendens, Hydrachna globose, Hydrachna prosifera, Hydrachna skorikowi, Hydrodroma despiciens, Hydryphantes dispar, Limnesia fulgida, Eylais setosa, Hydryphantes flexuosus were used in this study. The total masses of these species were measured as mg with the use of an elemental analyzer to calculate the percentage of the organic components of their structures. The achieved values were assessed separately for each species and element with the interpolation method. Out of these organic elements, the amount of C with an approximately value of 50% was the highest for all species while the amounts of S which was approximately 1% was determined as the lowest for almost all species. The observed values were discussed in terms of the systematic of water mites.

Abstract: this paper describes a research involving the development of a defibrillator and cardioversor analyzer and its metrological evaluation. the evaluation results are presented. the evaluation of measurement uncertainties was performed according to the directives of the brazilian version of the ea-4/02 - expressing uncertainty in calibration measurements - published by inmetro. the results conformed to the accuracy prescriptions defined in the ansi/aami df2 (american..., 1996) and ansi/aami df80 (american..., 2003) standards, presenting an expanded relative uncertainty of energy measurements of 1.0% in worst cases. an uncertainty analysis was performed for the calibration process employed in the research and the process capacity was evaluated. a maximum error of 5% or 1.0 j, whichever is greater, was determined for the energy measurements taken to calculate process capacity. the maximum error is 1/3 of the maximum error acceptable for the energy delivered by the defibrillators, i.e., it is the maximum error acceptable for a measurement device according to the ansi/aami df2 (american..., 1996) standard. the results for the capacity of the calibration procedure were shown to be appropriate for the specifications of a defibrillator and cardioversor analyzer. at worst case the capacity index cm was 2.87, well above the threshold of 1.0, which is the minimum value needed to consider the procedure as capable of calibrating energy measurements without incurring in a large definition uncertainty.
RAPID CHARACTERIZATION OF DIESEL FUEL BY INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY

Abstract: it is described an analytical method to characterize a diesel sample in a three minutes period using a portable infrared analyzer. the new models incorporated in the equipment were developed using the software of the equipment and analytical data generated in instituto colombiano del petróleo (icp), ecopetrol s.a. labs. based on this technique it is possible to obtain information about total aromatic content, sulphur content, polynuclear aromatic content and distillation temperatures in a diesel fuel sample. according to the validation results that showed some error bigger than the reproducibility of the original methods, it is recommended to use the proposed method as a semi quantitative one.
