Explanations for religious influence on adolescent sexual behavior in Brazil: direct and indirect effects
Verona, Ana Paula de Andrade;
Revista Brasileira de Estudos de Popula??o , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-30982011000100010
Abstract: religion is becoming an important and highly present factor in the lives of many adolescents and young adults in brazil. in addition to creating more space for them to maintain close relationships and participate actively in a religious environment, some religions have promoted the dissemination of clearer standards and objectives, as well as punitive sanctions, with respect to many aspects of their younger followers' lives, including their sexual behavior. this article examines how religion can affect, direct and indirectly, the sexual behavior of brazilian adolescents. the main objective of this study is to look for a connection between christian smith's theoretical framework, which suggests several mechanisms through which religion can influence the lives of american adolescents, and ethnographic studies conducted in brazil, as well as quantitative works that have brought attention to social and demographic consequences of recent religious transformations. even though there is limited empirical evidence as to how the mechanisms of religious involvement work in brazil, this study concludes that each of smith's pathways can also be used to explain potential effects of religion on sexual behavior of brazilian adolescents. this research should encourage empirical studies on such effects in brazil. besides the importance of examining the impact of the recent transformations in brazil religious landscape on demographic phenomena, this topic deserves further consideration from brazilian demographers because religion is a primary socialization agent of adolescents, and sexual activity is a sphere of human behavior of high importance in its religious applicability.
Angiogenesis and schistosomal granuloma formation
Baptista, Ana Paula;Andrade, Zilton A;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762005000200012
Abstract: an increasing amount of evidences points to angiogenesis as playing a paramount role in fibrosis development. however, granulomas in general, and periovular schistosomal granulomas in particular, are considered avascular structures, although they usually result in dense areas of focal fibrosis. in order to clarify this apparent paradox, the presence of blood vessels was systematically searched in hepatic schistosomal granulomas of mice, during different stages of the infection, and at different stages of granuloma evolution, by means of vascular injections of colored masses, demonstration of laminin in vascular basement membranes and by ultra structural analysis. vascular proliferation appeared evident at the early stages of granuloma formation, gradually decreasing thereafter, older granulomas becoming almost avascular structures, sometimes delimited at the periphery by a rich vascular network.

Food and Nutrition Sciences (FNS) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/fns.2012.38142
Abstract: The microbiological, chemical and sensory characteristics of licensed and unlicensed commercial Serrano cheese, a traditional product from the highlands of South Brazil, were studied. The average bacteria counts (log CFU/g) were 8.8, 3.4, 3.4, 5.1, and 8.8, for mesophilic bacteria, fecal coliforms, staphylococci, yeasts and moulds, and lactic acid bacteria (LAB), respectively. Differences in microbiological quality were detected between licensed and unlicensed cheeses. However, the presence of potential gastroentheric bacteria in both kind of cheeses is disturbing and point out the necessity of alternative manufacturing process and good manufacturing practices to minimize consumers’ health risks. The most prevalent LAB were Lactobacillus (91%), followed Lactococcus and Enterococcus. Lactobacillus isolates comprised L. plantarum (57.7%), L. paracasei (19.2%), L. rhamnosus (7.7%), L. acidophilus (7.7%), and 3.8% of both L. curvatus and L. fermentum. Non-significant physico-chemical differences were detected between licensed and unlicensed cheeses. Cheeses that received the highest sensorial scores exhibited the presence of both L. plantarum and L. paracasei, indicating that mixed populations of these species positively contributed to flavor development.

Journal of Biosciences and Medicines (JBM) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jbm.2015.311009
Abstract: The platelet indices Mean Platelet Volume (MPV), Platelet Distribution Width (PDW) and Plate-letcrit (PCT) provided by automated hematology analysis are rarely used in clinical practice. Platelets play a central role in the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and high MPV has been associated to more reactive platelets and regarded as an independent risk factor for myocardial infarction. In this study, platelet indices were evaluated in 39 patients with ACS presenting two altered biochemical parameters, C reactive protein (CRP) and creatine kinase fraction MB (CK-MB). The results obtained showed significantly higher MPV and PDW values in the group with ACS in comparison to the control group. Also observed was a weak but significant positive correlation between MPV and CK-MB. In view of findings of previous studies, which have associated macroplatelets with higher thrombotic potential our results suggest that the use of the MPV and PDW indices as additional and complementary markers may contribute to the investigation and follow-up of thrombotic risk in patients with ACS.

Abstract: poor school performance has historically constituted one of most frequent reasons for student referrals to applied psychology centers and, due to the complexity involved, has posed a challenge to academic development and practices in the field of educational and school psychology. faced with the need to improve customer service and the screening process, this study aimed to examine a total of 1,590 school records registering poor performance for the period of 1996-2009 among patients to the centre for applied psychology of the federal university of juiz de for a, minas gerais, brazil. results revealed a prevalence of boys aged between 9 and 13 and a predominance of referrals from schools located in the city's outskirts. poor school performance was found to often involve behavioural problems and learning difficulties. the data allowed us to make a critical analysis of poor school performance and other contextual factors, as well as the need for an improvement in the screening process.
Remodeling of hepatic vascular changes after specific chemotherapy of schistosomal periportal fibrosis
Andrade, Zilton A;Baptista, Ana Paula;Santana, Thayn? Souto;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762006000900041
Abstract: hepatosplenic schistosomiasis was the first human disease in which the possibility of extensive long standing hepatic fibrosis being degraded and removed has been demonstrated. when such changes occurred, the main signs of portal hypertension (splenomegaly, esophageal varices) progressively disappeared, implying that a profound vascular remodeling was concomitantly occurring. hepatic vascular alterations associated with advanced schistosomiasis have already been investigated. obstruction of the intrahepatic portal vein branches, plus marked angiogenesis and compensatory hyperplasia and hypertrophy of the arterial tree are the main changes present. however, there are no data revealing how these vascular changes behave during the process of fibrosis regression. here the mouse model of pipestem fibrosis was used in an investigation about these vascular alterations during the course of the infection, and also after treatment and cure of the disease. animals representing the two polar hepatic forms of the infection were included: (1) "isolated granulomas" characterized by isolated periovular granulomas sparsely distributed throughout the hepatica parenchyma; and (2) 'pipestem fibrosis' with periovular granulomas and fibrosis being concentrated within portal spaces, before and after treatment, were studied by means of histological and vascular injection-corrosion techniques. instances of widespread portal vein obstruction of several types were commonly found in the livers of the untreated animals. these obstructive lesions were soon repaired, and completely disappeared four months following specific treatment of schistosomiasis. treatment was accomplished by the simultaneous administration of praziquantel and oxamniquine. the most impressive results were revealed by the technique of injection of colored masses into the portal system, followed by corrosion in strong acid. the vascular lesions of non-treated pipestem fibrosis were represented in the plastic casts by conside

Abstract: cardiac pacing through cardiac pacemaker is one of the most promising alternatives in the treatment of arrhythmias, but it can cause reactions natural or complex reactions, either early or late. this study aimed to describe the scientific evidence on the risk of infection and biofilm formation associated with cardiac pacemaker. this is a study of integrative literature review. it included 14 publications classified into three thematic categories: diagnosis (microbiological and/or clinical), complications and therapy of infections. staphylococcus epidermidis and staphylococcus aureus were the microorganisms most frequently isolated. it was not possible to determine the incidence of infection associated with pacemakers, since the studies were generally of prevalence. in terms of therapy, the complete removal of pacemakers stood out, especially in cases of suspected biofilm. still controversial is the use of systemic antibiotic prophylaxis in reducing the incidence of infection associated with implantation of a pacemaker
