Teaching with an Attitude: Finding Ways to the Conundrum of a Postmodern Curriculum  [PDF]

Abstract: Several scholars in the field of education have questioned the constituent aspects of a curriculum that would better respond to the rising demands in contemporary societies. The relevance of such enquiry finds its place in the very transformations in today’s societies marked by significant changes in the ways of knowing, being, and acting primarily due to the advent of new digital media in more recent globalizing processes. As Burke (2009) has stated, if schools wish to maintain their relevance in society, they must take into account such changes by first and foremost acknowledging the new and complex ways of making meanings in out-of-school literacy practices as equally legitimating those happening within school contexts. Along with Burke (ibid.), this paper advocates the need of rethinking the notion of curriculum in the light of the new ontologies and epistemologies of postmodernity. Such task proves itself to be a conundrum inasmuch as the very notion of curriculum has been traditionally founded on modern principles such as linearity, stability, and universality (Silva, 2009). In view of this, how can educators respond to the challenge of redefining what should be taught in schools in postmodern times so that students would better perform in relation to the self and the other within their social practices? This paper aims to analyse the relationship between postmodern philosophical concepts, curriculum theory and educational practice by presenting the notion of curricular attitude (Duboc, 2012) as a local redesign of teaching practices within a Brazilian educational context. Despite being situated in the field of foreign language teaching, the notion of a curricular attitude might be of interest of other areas of knowledge since it seeks to revisit teaching practices in the light of wider philosophical concerns.
Electro-Optical Properties of Carbon Nanotubes Obtained by High Density Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposition  [PDF]

Abstract: In this work, we studied the electro-optical properties of high-aligned carbon nanotubes deposited at room temperature. For this, we used the High Density Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposition system. This system uses a new concept of plasma generation: a planar coil is coupled to an RF system for plasma generation. This was used together with an electrostatic shield, for plasma densification, thereby obtaining high-density plasmas. The carbon nanotubes were deposited using pure methane plasmas. Three methods were used for the surface modification of the sample: reference substrate (silicon wafer only submitted to a chemical cleaning), silicon wafer with surface roughness generated by plasma etching, silicon wafer with a thin iron film and silicon wafer with diamond nano powder used as precursor materials. For each kind of silicon wafer surface, the carbon nanotubes were deposited with two different deposition times (two and three hours). The carbon nanotubes structural characteristics were analyzed by Atomic Force Microscope and Scanning Electronic Microscope. The carbon nanotubes electrical characteristics were observed by Raman Spectroscopy and the carbon nanotubes electro-optical properties were analyzed by current vs voltage electrical measurements and photo-luminescence spectroscopy measurements. The photoelectric effect in the carbon nanotubes were determined by photo-induced current measurements. In this work, we obtained carbon nanotubes with semiconductor properties and carbon nanotubes with metallic properties. The electro-optical effects depend strongly on the substrate preparation and the deposition parameters of the carbon nanotubes. The carbon nanotubes are high aligned and show singular properties that can be used for many applications.
Snow Cover Area Estimation Using Radar and Optical Satellite Information  [PDF]

Abstract: Obtaining the seasonal variation of snow cover in areas of the Argentinian Andes is important for hydrological studies and can facilitate proper planning of water resources, with regard to irrigation, supply, flood attenuation and hydroelectricity. Remote sensors that work in the visible and infrared wavelength range are operational tools for monitoring the snow in clear skies. However, microwave satellites are able to obtain data regardless of atmospheric conditions. The advantage of using radar images is that they are very useful to obtain highly accurate parameters such as snow moisture depth, density and water equivalent resulting in improved forecasting models. In this paper, we analyze an ERS-2 image of the Andes mountain range in the northern region of the Neuquén province, Patagonia, Argentina. The objective was to obtain the spatial distribution of wet and dry snow and to compare these results with data from optical sensors (LANDSAT) in order to understand the topographic variables that influence the spatial distribution of wet snow. Optical information from sensors like LANDSAT TM 5 was analyzed to obtain fractional and binary snow indexes during a passage simultaneously with radar data. Surface temperature is used to study the association between the different types of snow altitudinal ranges and surface temperature. In this paper, we selected a scene on October 8th 2005. The entire methodology was systematized in a code implemented in IDL language.

Abstract: the purpose of this article is analyzing, in a comparative perspective, the managerial public administration and the societal public administration, in order to propose a research agenda for future investigation. in this perspective, we examine the antecedents and characteristics of these public management models and then we compare these models from six observational variables: the origin, the political project, the structural dimensions emphasized in management, the administrative organization of the state apparatus, the institutions opening to social participation, and the management approach. finally, we emphasize the limits and benefits of each model, and point out the need to deepen studies about societal public administration and the social management approach.

Para tanto, s o examinadas suas três principais contribui es para esses estudos, tendo como referência o marxismo anarquizante que permeia seu pensamento: a crítica da burocracia, a crítica das teorias administrativas e a crítica da co-gest o. A inten o é demonstrar que suas críticas est o diretamente relacionadas com a vis o anarquista que sustenta seu pensamento libertário e sua defesa da autogest o. Concluindo, avalia-se a atualidade do pensamento de Tragtenberg em um contexto de revival e resgate da utopia anarquista, apontando caminhos para os estudos organizacionais que podem ser realizados de acordo com essa perspectiva. This article analyzes the contribution of Maurício Tragtenberg to the field of critical administration. As such, three principle contributions are examined for this study, using as a reference anarchistic Marxism that permeated his thinking, a critique of bureaucracy, a critique of administrative theories and a critique of co-management. The intention is to demonstrate that such critiques are directly related to an anarchist vision that sustains his libertarian thinking and defense of self management. In conclusion the article evaluates the current thinking of Tragtenberg in the context of revival and rescue of anarchist utopia, pointing to paths for organizational studies that could be made in agreement with this perspective.

Abstract: the paper discusses the fragmentation between practices developed in healthcare services and knowledge generated in the academic context, proposing a reflection on the subject as a phenomenon related to the concepts of modern science, guided by cartesian paradigm. it discusses the relevance of establishing new conceptions of building knowledge, valuing those elaborated in routine services and proposing a new approach about this subject in undergraduate and graduate courses, and also other activities within inservice education proposals. from this perspective it describes an experience in conducting workshops of texts elaboration, focused for professionals who are performing specialization courses in health area, aiming the systematization and socialization of experiences developed in their fields of professional activities. this activity allowed an important place in building knowledge and the elaboration of texts in the form of experience reports, published in scientific journals.

Abstract: this article investigates the architect's education within brazilian schools, so that an adequate basis and content can be found that enables the professional to act in the preservation of constructed heritage as well as other buildings of interest. the discussion also extends to the postgraduate courses such as the masters degree denominated "lato sensu" as well as that known as "stricto sensu". the consequences of the lack of the teaching of a discipline involving architectural restoration will be analyzed at the undergraduate and masters degree levels. such consequences have resulted in the destruction of historical documents that are the basis of the collective memory, affecting the transmission of the people's legacy to future generations. it intends to prove that if there were a solid education of the architect in the area of architectonic restoration, the professionals would have the theoretical, critical and technical instruments necessary to indeed preserve the cultural assets.
