Abstract:

Species of the genus Erythrina are frequently used as ornamental plants and in projects to restore degraded areas. Also, extracts from its shoots and stems are popularly used as a herbal medicine with validated activity on the central nervous system. The objective of this study was to evaluate E. mulungu and E. velutina seed germination and seedling development potential aiming commercial scale production of those species. Seeds stored for one or twelve months at 10°C ± 2°C were sown in sand, soil or Plantmax? substrates and evaluated for germination and seedling development. Subsequently, seedlings sprouted in Plantmax? were transferred to

American Journal of Plant Sciences (AJPS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ajps.2013.44104
Abstract:

Although nowadays there are methods for determining the Minimal Bactericidal Concentration and Minimal Fungicidal Concentration, it is indispensable that the establishment of innovative methodologies could be more practical and cheaper. The new methodology Flash microbiocide is an assay in which one aliquot from 96 well plate of Minimal Inhibitory Concentration test is transferred to another plate containing different culture medium. The correspondence with the reference methods described in the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS-CLSI) document M26-A was achieved, denoting the efficiency of this fast and simple method.

International Journal of Clinical Medicine (IJCM) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ijcm.2018.95041
Abstract: Objective: To determine the ultrastructural findings on Rectal Mucosa (RM) of patients with HIV/AIDS and anorectal pathologies (ARP), at micrometric and nanometric scales. Materials and methods: 5 patients were evaluated, 18 - 55 years old, with ARP (HIV co-infection with HPV, n = 4, and HIV-negative patient with HPV infection) (control n = 1), who were referred to the Coloproctology Unit of the HUC, and subjected to rectoscopy and biopsy. RM samples were identified, placed in a sterile plastic bottle with 1 mL of 2% glutaraldehyde and immediately transported for routine processing of fine cut (60 - 90 nm) to be evaluated via Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). They were fixed with Karnovsky solution with Millonig phosphate buffer (pH 7.4 and 320 mOsm) and post-fixed with OsO4 under the same conditions of pH and osmolarity. Results: Ultrastructural findings, at 106 scale: 1) Intestinal mucosa: vacuoles of mucus of different sizes that seem to be fused. 2) Smooth muscle cells: loss of definition of contractile myofilaments mass. 3) Unmyelinated axons and terminals of Schwann cells (SC): Edema and loss of their plasma membranes in some areas of association with axon terminals as well as abundant collagen fibers associated with SC. Ultrastructural findings, at 109 scale: 1) Smooth muscle cells: folded wrapper cores and edema of mitochondria and rough endoplasmic reticulum cisterns (RER). 2) Myelinated axon terminals: Loss of synaptic vesicles. 3) Fibroblasts: One observes mitochondria and cisterns of RER with alterations. All these alterations can generate intestinal and anorectal dysfunction in these patients. Conclusions: The HIV causes changes in rectal and muscular mucosa despite HAART treatment with undetectable viral load.

American Journal of Plant Sciences (AJPS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ajps.2013.43066
Abstract:

Roots of Zeyheriamontana, a species native to the savanna (Cerrado) region of central Brazil, produce lapachol, a naphthoquinone with anticancer activity. Lapachol is also the precursor of β-lapachone, a novel drug candidate for preventive and adjuvant cancer therapies. The leaves of Z. montana are a renewable source of ursolic acid and oleanoic acid, compounds known for their anticancer, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The potential prophylactic use of β-lapachone, as well as the medicinal properties of ursolic acid, highlights the importance of this study on Z.montana’s germplasm conservation. Multiple shoots were induced on Woody Plant media with supplemented 0.1 mg·L-1 of thidiazuron (TDZ). Rooting was promoted on half strength WP (Woody Plant media containing 1.0 mg·L-1 of Indolbutiric acid-IBA). Plantlet acclimatization to ex-vitro condition was done at a 70% success rate using different substrates. It was possible to store Z.montana’s elite germplasm using in vitro cultures of media containing 2% sucrose plus 4% sorbitol for six months without subcultures.

State-civil society partnership: issues for debate and new researches
Vasconcellos, Mário;Vasconcellos, Ana Maria de A.;
Organiza??es & Sociedade , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-92302011000400008
Abstract: in this paper we look at the literature related to partnership between state and civil society, especially partnership between public and non-for-profit organisations. we discuss the differing perspectives of partnership and attempt to identify some of the main theoretical concerns about partnership between state and civil society in the governance context. in this paper, we argue that the historical background of partnership has not been included among factors used in explaining the resort to partnership in governance. in spite of existing analyses showing that partnership brings social benefits in their own right, we try to show that there is no evidence that this ‘social technology’ contributes effectively to bringing power to powerless people and social groups. most of the literature shows that partnership tries to make relationship between local people and local governance stronger and improve the possibilities for powerless people and social groups to participate in local governance. however, we do not find clear evidence in the literature that partnership allows for a shift in political power. finally, we show that it is unclear whether the interaction between ordinary people and the state through a participatory process has successfully helped to build social cohesiveness for different social groups. the main contribution of this paper is to expand the understanding of the factors that influence the process of partnership between state and civil society (positively and negatively) for local development.
Eficácia da fonoterapia em disfagia neurogênica usando a escala funcional de ingest?o por via oral (FOIS) como marcador
Furkim, Ana Maria;Sacco, Andréa Baldi de Freitas;
Revista CEFAC , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-18462008000400010
Abstract: purpose: to evaluate efficacy of speech therapy treatments and the interference of risk factors in adult patients admitted to the wards with neurological diseases and symptoms of dysphagia, using the functional oral intake scale as parameter of safe progression for oral feeding. methods: we carried out a retrospective study on forty-nine patients with neurogenic dysphagia under speech therapy sessions while in the wards and a comparison between the results of the functional oral intake scale before and after the therapy sessions(measuring the amount and type of orally-taken food in a safe manner by the patients). possible factors affecting the therapy such as etiology of the neurologic disease, age, respiratory and clinical conditions, alertness, time and duration of the therapy sessions were studied. results: over the 49 studied patients, 36 showed improvement in the fois after speech therapy sessions. regarding possible factors affecting the therapy, statistical analysis showed that deterioration of clinical condition, clinical intercurrences and decreased level of alertness were significant factors for the lack of progress to oral feeding during the speech therapy sessions. the other factors, etiology of disease, age, respiratory condition, time and number of sessions, did not demonstrate statistical significance. however, they did not interfere in improving or worsening the patients' clinical condition. conclusion: there is an effective improvement in feeding by oral intake in patients with neurogenic dysphagia being treated by speech therapy sessions in the hospital wards. however, it cannot be achieved if the patient shows clinical intercurrences and decreased alertness level.

Abstract: Inner bark extracts of Stryphnodendron adstringens, a leguminous tree species known as Barbatimão, are often incorporated to phytotherapic formulations due to their antimicrobial and healing activities. In this study, extracts from S. adstringens accessions collected in 12 distinct locations were investigated in order to determine the rates of tannins in inner barks and to validate S. adstringens antibacterial and antifungal effectiveness. Yields of tannins were quantified by colorimetric assay following methodology described in the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia and the antimicrobial activity was determined by microdilution technique proposed by the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards using S. adstringens hydroalcoholic and aqueous extracts and semi-purified fractions. Investigated extracts did not present significant antibacterial activity though aqueous extracts exhibited antifungal effect against both Trichophyton rubrum mutant and clinical strains (MIC 156 μg/mL). A positive correlation between tannin concentration and antifungal activity was observed and the accessions collected in Delfinópolis (MG) were considered elite.
