Borges, Ana Luiza Vilela;Nakamura, Eunice;
Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-11692009000100015
Abstract: this study aimed to identify standards and expectations regarding sexual initiation of 14 to 18 year-old adolescents in sao paulo, sp, brazil, using data from four focal groups conducted in 2006. results revealed that gender issues are clearly present in participants' reports and showed to be essential in their choices about the moment, partners and contraceptive practices in the first sexual relation. adolescents are subordinated to gender roles, traditionally attributed to male and female genders, i.e. the notion that sex is an uncontrolled instinct for boys, and intrinsically and closely associated to love and desire for girls. adolescents also play a preponderant role in the perpetuation of these values within the group they live in.

Texto & Contexto - Enfermagem , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-07072007000300008
Abstract: this is a qualitative research that aimed to investigate brazilian landless workers movement women's access to pre-natal care and cervical cancer prevention. interviews were done in 2005 with five women in the city of cajamar, brazil. the thematic analysis of content made it possible to evidence that access barriers such as territorial delimitation and geographical distance let women use false addresses as mechanisms to receive care. pap smear tests were performed only during pregnancy. health care provided for these women was fragmented and they received care solely because of their reproductive condition. access to health services must be understood as continuous and complete assistance in all phases of a woman's life and they consist of a challenge to reach rural women. improving access to information and education for these women corresponds to the possibility of exercising the universal right of access to health care based on the principle of equity.

Borges, Ana Luiza Vilela;
Revista da Escola de Enfermagem da USP , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0080-62342007000400009
Abstract: this is a cross-sectional study con-ducted with 222 15 to 19 year-old female adolescents who lived in the area of a family health unit in the east part of the city of s?o paulo. the aim was to describe their motivation for starting sexual life or remaining virgin, as well as the associated factors to the onset of sexual life. the girls that had already initiated their sexual life were older, did not cohabitate with both parents, were out of school, lived in illegally-occupied houses and were dating in a higher proportion than the virgin ones. it was also observed a decrease in the value of virginity, but the first intercourse independently of marriage seemed to be acceptable only when there was a romantic relationship with the partner, showing that traditional gender relations continue to be the basis for those girls' sexual behavior.

Borges, Ana Luiza Vilela;Schor, Néia;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2005000200016
Abstract: this cross-sectional study aimed to assess gender differences in adolescents in relation to onset of sexual activity. a total of 406 15-19-year-old adolescents from a family health unit in the city of s?o paulo, brazil, were interviewed from may to december 2002. nearly half had already had their first sexual intercourse, at a mean age of 15, independently of gender. sexual debut was usually unplanned (72.7%) and inside the home (86.1%). an equal proportion (61.0%) of males and females used some contraceptive method in their first sexual intercourse; however, more males had used a contraceptive method in their most recent intercourse. having initiated their sexual activity in stable, affective relationships, females proved to be more vulnerable to std/ aids, since they switched from condoms to the pill in their subsequent sexual activity. male adolescents continued to use mostly condoms, probably because they were involved mainly in non-stable relationships.
Homens adolescentes e vida sexual: heterogeneidades nas motiva??es que cercam a inicia??o sexual
Borges, Ana Luiza Vilela;Schor, Néia;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2007000100024
Abstract: this article describes male adolescents' affective history and reasons for initiating or postponing sexual activity, using interviews with 184 males ages 15 to 19 and residing in the city of s?o paulo, brazil, in 2002. factors for sexual debut included physical attraction, curiosity, and the desire to lose their virginity, suggesting a profile similar to the male social role. most of the virgin adolescent males justified their choice based on issues of a romantic order, such as not having found the right person or because they preferred to remain virgin until marrying. the results showed a dual social pattern, valuing the feeling of love and deliverance to the loved one, simultaneously with the pressing physical and instinctive desire for sex. traditional patterns of masculinity, like the dissociation between sex and love, appear to be transposed to sexual debut, revealing a diversity in the ways of experiencing sexuality during adolescence, related in turn to the sexual and reproductive health of men and their partners.
