Nicaretta, Denise Hack;Pereira, Jo?o Santos;Pimentel, Maria Lucia Vellutini;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1997000300024
Abstract: the clinical features of the primary progressive freezing gait, a rare and distinct neurological entity, have been described in some articles. this paper describes this gait disorder affecting one patient, whose condition's long course provoked no postural instability. as stated in the literature, the pathophysiology of the primary progressive freezing gait still remains unclear, although the lack of response to levodopa therapy suggests a possible involvement of nondopaminergic pathways. alteration in the visual perception may be a potential cause for the condition.
The Environmental Dimension of Groundwater in Brazil: Conflicts between Mineral Water and Water Resource Management  [PDF]
Ana Lucia Desenzi Gesicki, Francesco Sindico
Journal of Water Resource and Protection (JWARP) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jwarp.2014.616140
Abstract: There are three legal categories of groundwater in Brazil. Mineral water and potable table water are considered mineral resources, are part of the Federative Union’s assets, and follow the legal regime applicable for the mining sector. “Normal” groundwater, on the other hand, falls under State’s jurisdiction and is dealt within the Brazilian System of Water Resource Management, which promotes a decentralized and participatory management of water resources on surface or stored underground. This has led to conflicts of competences between federal (mining regulation) and state agencies (water resource management) because different concepts and styles of management are involved. This article argues for the urgent need to reopen the discussion aimed at a possible major revision of Brazilian mineral water legislation, in order to duly take into account the environmental dimension of groundwater as a public good for common use. An open-minded and transparent discussion involving the government and different sectors of society with competing interests in mineralized groundwater would therefore be highly recommended.
"What kind of Agrarian Reform, after all?": Revisiting an unfinished debate in Brazil
Valente,Ana Lucia;
Estudos Sociedade e Agricultura , 2008,
Abstract: in the present article, the land reform issue is examined in three angles: state action, the existing demand for agrarian reform, and current academic debates. from the analysis of different perspectives, this article indicates, as a possible answer to its title's question, the concentration of human, financial and logistical resources in the region that ranges from minas gerais to maranh?o. expropriation and acquisition mechanisms are possible because land is cheaper in northeastern brazil, considering the country's paucity of resources and the need to maximize the governmental effectiveness. because of the expressive presence of african descendents, the suggested choices must also include ethnic issues. land reform could thus become an expressive policy in brazil that may reduce rural poverty with effective results, from which many social segments may benefit.
