Abstract: the use of information on the planning of police activities is one of the core issues concerning the debate on the contemporary public security paradigms. thus, the criminal statistics are an important instrument in this process. this article promotes a discussion about the usage of criminal statistics as a source of information in their planning actions. three variables were considered on the paper's development: the contemporary policing paradigms; the usage and the functionalities of criminal statistics in their planning activities; and the usage of criminal statistics by law enforcement officers and their organizational context. as a conclusion, the paper considers the necessity to observe the culture and structure of police institutions as a key element in a model of policing based on intelligence, pro-activity and crime prevention.

Abstract: the importance of umbilical chord blood (ucb) study has been verified by the presence of hematopoietic stem cells in human ucb. the use of dogs as experimental model has provided usefull information for transplants in humans. however, despite the importance of ucb and dogs as experimental model, there are no studies concerning to the serum protein electrophoresis of the canine ucb. in this assay, ucb from 20 newborn dogs were collected, which was used for protein electrophoretic fractioning. the serum protein absolute medium values found for total proteins, albumine, alpha, beta and gamaglobulines in the ucb of newborn dogs where 3.09±0.59; 1.51±0.38; 0.87±0.17; 0.68±0.12 and 0.03±0.01, respectively. all values were presented bellow reported levels for adult animals, due to protein and its fractions passage mainly through the colostrum and due to hepatic immaturity. in all electrophoretic bandshifts from the canine ucb was observed a small curve between alphaglobulin 2 and betaglobulin 1, not reported in adult dogs. therefore, in this assay quantitative differences were observed in the electrophoretic bandshift of serum proteins from dog?s ucb at birth, differing them, in this particularly, from dogs in others post-colostral life stages.

Abstract: the objective of this study is to provide the first report of bone marrow transplantation (bmt) in dogs in brazil. a rottweiler with cutaneous lymphoma was submitted to a twelve-week madison-wisconsin chemotherapy protocol followed by autologous bone marrow transplantation. for this, 10ml kg-1 of bone marrow was collected simultaneously from both iliac crests and cryopreserved in a freezer at -80°c. the conditioning step was performed by administering cyclophosphamide by intravenous route at 400mg m-2. bone marrow was reinfused after defrosting in a water bath at 37°c. bone marrow nucleated cell counts before and after freezing, showed a small relative loss of nucleated cells (35.10 and 31.80x103μl-1 , respectively). cyclophosphamide induced neutropenia which was reverted by a granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (g-csf) capable of stimulating hematopoetic reconstitution. on the day 360 after transplant the patient was found to be in complete remission. this study indicates that autologous bmt in a dog with lymphoma submitted to myelosuppressive chemotherapy was potentially safe and effective.

Abstract: through this work, we proposed to analyse a group of urban alternative sports participants to try to understand if they are, or not, a part of a subculture. our data was collected throughout participant observation as a means to obtain the information and was complemented with semi-structured interviews. these data were submitted to content analysis, from which resulted our categorical system. the categories for analysis were: i) ideology; ii) social resistance; iii) identity construction; iv) symbology and aesthetics; v) independency from global space and vi) relationship with space of practice. we concluded that parkour has a unique ideology; a group dynamics with it?s own rules and conducts; an aesthetic related to the way it explores the space of practice on one hand, and with functionality of the clothes worn, on the other hand, a sense of independence towards the evolution of the global scene; and a new way of relating to urban space.
