New antithrombotic aryl-sulfonylthiosemicarbazide derivatives synthesized from natural safrole

Abstract: as part of a research program aiming at the synthesis and pharmacological evaluation of novel lead-compounds exploring brazilian abundant natural products, we describe herein the synthesis and the antithrombotic profile of new aryl-sulfonylsemicarbazides and aryl-sulfonylthiosemicarbazides (10a-d). the new derivatives, designed with basis on the molecular hybridization concept, were prepared in good yields from natural safrole (9), isolated from sassafras oil. the anti-aggregating activity of these new derivatives (10a-d) on platelet aggregation induced by adp, collagen, arachidonic acid and u-46619, indicates an important antithrombotic profile for the 6-methyl-3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl-sulfonyl-n-phenylthiosemicarbazide derivative (10d), acting at the arachidonic acid cascade and representing a new lead-compound with antithrombotic activity.
Effect of Growth Retardants on Floral Biology, Fruit Set and Fruit Quality of Cape Gooseberry (Physalis peruviana L.)

Abstract: Various doses of paclobutrazol (12.5, 25, 50 and 100 ppm) and ethephon (100, 200, 400 and 800 ppm) on flowering, fruit characters and quality of cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana L.) were observed. Results indicated that ethephon 800 ppm delayed flowering but prolonged duration of fruit set and early ripening by 30.25, 2.5 and 10.13 days, respectively over control. 400 ppm of ethephon was more effective than 800 ppm in respect of fruit weight and quality constituents. In the same trend by 17.5, 2.37 and 5.85 days delay in flowering, prolonged duration of fruit set and early ripening, respectively were recorded with paclobutrazol 100 ppm. However, ethephon 400 ppm and paclobutrazol 50 ppm significantly influenced the fruit set, growth rate, cumulative growth, volume, density and TSS/acidity ratio of the fruit as compared to control and other concentrations of the retardants.
Spatial filter with multiple extracted poles

Abstract: We present the numerical simulation results of the scattering of a plane linearly polarized wave at a multi-aperture frequency-selective surface and two design examples for a spatial band-pass filter with multiple extracted poles. Filters are formed by three consecutively placed perforated screens. Shown, that the screens, elementary cell of which contains a number of different rectangular apertures, provide the appearance of extracted poles on the frequency response of the filter.

Abstract: the coat protein gene of apple stem grooving virus (asgv) was amplified by rt-pcr, cloned, sequenced and subcloned in the expression vector pmal-c2. this plasmid was used to transform escherichia coli bl21c+ competent cells. the asgv coat protein (cp) was expressed as a fusion protein containing a fragment of e. coli maltose binding protein (mbp). bacterial cells were disrupted by sonication and the asgvcp/mbp fusion protein was purified by amylose resin affinity chromatography. polyclonal antibodies from rabbits immunized with the fusion protein gave specific reactions to asgv from infected apple (malus domestica) cv. fuji irradiada and chenopodium quinoa at dilutions of up to 1:1,000 and 1:2,000, respectively, in plate trapped elisa. the asgvcp/mbp fusion protein reacted to a commercial antiserum against asgv in immunoblotting assay. the igg against asgvcp/mbp performed favorably in specificity and sensitivity to the virus. this method represents an additional tool for the efficient asgv-indexing of apple propagative and mother stock materials, and for use in support of biological and molecular techniques.
Ressec o Parcial de Palato (RPP) para tratamento de roncopatia pela Técnica de Quesada e Perelló: resultados

Abstract: Roncopatia é uma entidade relativamente comum, presente em 38% das mulheres e 40% dos homens, com importantes implica es sociais. Várias técnicas s o descritas na literatura para a corre o da hipertrofia do palato mole, associadas a outros procedimentos, com o propósito de remiss o dos sintomas. OBJETIVO: Para estudar os resultados da técnica proposta por Quesada e Perelló, denominada Ressec o Parcial do Palato (RPP), avaliamos a remiss o do ronco, as complica es e o conforto pós-operatório do paciente. FORMA DE ESTUDO: Clínico retrospectivo. MATERIAL E MéTODO: 28 pacientes foram arrolados no estudo, de abril de 1994 a agosto de 2000, mas apenas 23 preencheram os critérios de inclus o, com queixas de ronco sem altera es compatíveis com apnéia obstrutiva. Todos os pacientes apresentavam classifica o de Fujita tipo I ou II e foram avaliados com polissonografia, tomografia computadorizada e exame otorrinolaringológico completo. RESULTADOS: Após 6 meses, a remiss o dos sintomas foi total em 12 casos (42%), parcial em 9 (32%) e inalterado em 2 (7%); 5 pacientes n o completaram o acompanhamento de seis meses. CONCLUS O: A técnica de Ressec o Parcial do Palato proposta por Quesada et al. e Perelló mostrou-se segura e eficaz no tratamento do ronco.

First Principle Study on the Electric Structure of β-FeSi2 with Native Point Defects  [PDF]

Abstract: The projector-augmented plane wave potentials method under the density functional theory (DFT ) was used to calcu-late the electronic structure of perfect and native point defective β-FeSi2 crystal. The calculated band structure shows that the band gap of perfect crystal is about 0.74eV, which is a little smaller than the experimental of about 0.9eV. The density of states results predicts that β-FeSi2 with Fe vacancies behaves n-type, and that with Si vacancies will shows p-type, which is in accordant with the experimental results.
Corrosion Behaviour of Modified HVOF Sprayed WC Based Cermet Coatings on Stainless Steel  [PDF]

Abstract: WC based cermet coatings have been considered as alternative replacements to the more traditional hard chrome plating for improved surface properties of aircraft landing gear. While these coatings are used in engineering applications requiring superior hardness and improved wear resistance, little is known about the corrosion resistance. In this study, three WC based composite coatings were deposited onto ferritic stainless steel substrates using high velocity oxy fuel (HVOF) technology. Salt spray testing and potentiodynamic scanning studies in a saline environment were conducted on the coatings. Characterisation of the coating structure, composition and morphology, was carried out, prior to and after corrosion testing, using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and EDX elemental analysis. The results showed that poor corrosion performance was exhibited by all three coatings. This was attributed to the high levels of porosity and the presence of micro-cracks within the coatings, resulting in attack of the substrate directly by the saline environment and possible galvanic coupling effects between the substrate and the coating. Dissolution and / or erosion of specific phases within the coating, resulting in the formation of micro-channels and increased number / size of voids may have accelerated corrosion of the system.
