Revista Brasileira de Saúde Ocupacional , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0303-76572012000100015
Abstract: objective: to evaluate the prevalence of obesity and analyze its social-cultural determinants among adults from 86 farming families of a neighborhood of petrópolis, in the mountain region of rio de janeiro state. method: this quantitative and qualitative study on nutrition, food and work-related practices was conducted in 2008. the anthropometric data were collected by a household nutritional survey and the qualitative data, by participant observation and interviews. results: the obesity prevalence among men was low (9.3%) but it was very high (29.9%) in women. physical activity required for farm work in the region is more intense for men than for women. despite this difference, men and women have similar diet that includes a high proportion of high calorie food items. local families grow crops mainly for sale. commercial agriculture with product specialization encourages purchasing rather than growing food for family consumption. conclusion: the studied social-cultural and occupational aspects may have contributed to raise obesity among women in this community, and can be useful to study other populations with similar characteristics. this research confirms the significance of studying obesity at the local level, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches, in order to identify potential constrains and points of entry for locally relevant intervention programs.

Abstract: this study aimed to evaluate the effects of molasses yeast (saccharomyces cerevisae) as replacement for vitamin premix in diets for nile tilapia (oreochromis niloticus). three hundred sex-reversed, all-male fingerlings, averaging 1.5 g live weight, were stocked in 20 circular 270-l biofilter equipped fiberglass tanks (15 fish/tank). they were fed to satisfaction twice a day with a 32% crude protein diet for 40 days, followed by a 28% crude protein diet for 74 days. test diets were prepared to contain at least 10% of yeast as replacement for the vitamin premix, and a diet without yeast was used as control. five treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design with four replications. no significant differences were observed in regard to weight gain and specific growth rate. high mortality was observed on groups fed with diets without vitamin premix supplementation. fish fed with yeast-containing diets presented reduced body protein and increased body lipids as compared to fish fed with the control diet. molasses yeast is suited to replace water-dissolvable vitamins in diets of nile tilapia fingerlings.

Abstract: the current study aimed to analyze the histochemical and morphological characteristics of the levator ani muscle in rats. for this, we used 10 wistar rats (5 males and 5 females), weighing between 200 and 765g. the animals were dissected fresh and in formalin for the levator ani muscle anatomical observation. muscle fragments were collected and frozen in n-hexane previously cooled in liquid nitrogen. then, the muscles were transferred to a microtome cryostat (hm 505 e microm), being fixed in metal mounts with the adhesive tissue freezing medium. histological sections of 6.0μm were removed and subjected to he staining. other sections were subjected to nadh-tr and sdh reactions. after being dissected and fixed, the architecture of the female pelvic floor revealed the presence of two muscles: iliocaudalis and pubocaudalis. the anatomical inspection in male rats revealed, pronouncedly, the presence of the levator ani muscle: ischiocavernosus and bulbocavernous. we therefore observed a marked anatomical difference between animals of the same species, which does not occur with humans. the he staining revealed muscular fibers with preserved morphology, contours ranging from polygonal to rounded, acidophilic cytoplasm, one or more peripheral nuclei with rounded shape and dense chromatin aspect. the fibers were organized in fascicles arranged by a dense connective tissue, the perimysium, and each fiber surrounded by the endomysium, composed of loose connective tissue. the sections subjected to nadh-th and sdh, whose reactions show the activity of oxidative or glycolytic muscle fibers, allowed the identification of the two types of fiber. the fast-twitch fiber shows weaker reactivity, whereas the slow-twitch fiber has small diameter and intense reactivity, especially in the subsarcolemmal, presenting a highly oxidative metabolism. it was found that the pelvic floor muscles in rats are composed primarily by fast-twitch fibers, while in humans they are predominantly formed by s
Better Support Services for Better Mental Health?—The Case of Depression among Parents on Welfare  [PDF]

Open Journal of Depression (OJD) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ojd.2018.71001
Abstract: The present study aims to investigate independent and interactive impacts of risk and protective factors influencing depression among parents receiving welfare. The study uses panel data from the first two waves of the nationally representative Longitudinal Study of Australian Children. The analytic sample included 1204 parents of children aged 4 - 5 years who participated in both of the waves and received government payments as their main income source in Wave 1. At Wave 2, twenty seven percent of all participant parents have income support as their main income source, and one-third of these parents reported having depressive symptoms during the 4 weeks prior to the interview. In hierarchical regression analysis, specific stressful events in the past 12 months (relationship breakdown, financial hardship, substance abuse, and death of a love one) have emerged as significant risk factors of depression. Parenting self-efficacy, timely access to support services and neighborhood belonging were found to be significant protective factors of depression. The most unique and key finding is that parents experiencing stressful events were less likely to report depression if they had adequate access to support services at times of adversity, and these results remain largely unchanged above and beyond the effects of the control variables. These findings have important implications for inculcating resilience in families on welfare in particular, through driving an institutional change that is responsive to ongoing and emergent needs. It is important that policy and health services delivery are designed in conjunction to provide maximum support for disadvantaged families at times of adversity.

Abstract: this article is aimed at the concept of risk prevention criteria when working with presses, specifically in the current production context of the automotive industry. an ergonomics work analysis of an auto parts manufacturer's stamping production line operating in a network of suppliers for a large assembly plant was implemented, at the moment proposed protective devices were introduced by the risk prevention in presses and similar equipments program (rppsep). the results obtained from the analysis of the activity of work carried out before and after the introduction of light curtains and new bimanual controls demonstrate: the limits of the preventative criteria that guide rppsep, circumscribed by the man-machine interfaces; the organizational constraints of the importance of productivity and quality requirements in worker risk management possibilities, and the non-integrated prevention character of typical accidents and musculoskeletal disorders.
