Rodriguésia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S2175-78602012000200012
Abstract: the ecological plasticity observed in plants that inhabit different vegetation formations is often accompanied by morphological variations, the leaf being the vegetative organ with the greatest structural variation. in view of this concept, the leaf anatomy of five species of polygala l. occurring in restinga (sandy coastal plain) and cerrado (savanna) areas in the state of s?o paulo were analyzed in order to inventory their principal characters and describe their leaf structure, to thus compare them and assess the possibility of verifying structural patterns common to the ecological conditions of both vegetation formations. the species studied were: p. cyparissias a.st.-hil. & moq., p. laureola a.st.-hil. & moq., p. paniculata l. found in restinga, and p. angulata dc. and p. violacea aubl. emend. marques occurring in campo cerrado and cerrad?o margin areas, respectively. the middle region of the leaf blade and petiole proximal region of each leaf were processed following the usual techniques for scanning electron and light microscopy. the results show two structural patterns common to the species from the restinga and cerrado area formations: mesomorphic characteristics are observed in p. laureola, p. paniculata, and p. violacea, and xeromorphic in p. cyparissias and p. angulata.

Revista Brasileira de Biociências , 2008,
Abstract: Based on partially distinct characters to discriminate species, two revisions of the genus Polygala, subgenus Hebeclada (Polygalaceae)recognized approximately 40 species (sensu Chodat) and nine species (sensu Bernardi). Comparing these revisions, a taxonomic study about the species of this subgenus occurring in Brazil was carried out, totalizing 25 species sensu Chodat and six species sensu Bernardi. The delimitation of the specis sensu Chodat was found to be more consistent than Bernardi’s. Twelve species and five varieties were accepted, three of which were species sensu Chodat transferred to this status. This work presents an identification key of the species, their descriptions and illustrations, as well as informations about flowering and frutification times, habhttp://www.doaj.org/restrictedDirectory of open access journalsitat and geographic distribution.

American Journal of Plant Sciences (AJPS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ajps.2013.49229
Abstract:

This study describes the anatomy of sterile leaves of Elaphoglossum discolor (Kuhn) C. Chr., E. flaccidum (Fée) T. Moore and E. laminarioides (Bory ex Fée) T. Moore, the most representative species of the genus in the Ecological Park of Gunma in Pará State. It reports the main diagnostic characters and provides new systematic data for the group. In addition, it locates the production and accumulation sites of bioactive compounds to determine possible adaptive strategies of these species in the Amazon rainforest environment. Diagnostic structural features include stoma typology, central veins and margin forms, type of mesophyll, and the presence of schlerenchymatous sheaths in the cortex, among others. Among the bioactive compounds related to defense adaptation are phenolic compounds, which occur in all three species, and alkaloids and mucilage, which are exclusive to E. laminarioides. Of the three species studied, E. laminarioides has features that make it the best suited to the rainforest environment.

Journal of Biosciences and Medicines (JBM) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jbm.2015.311009
Abstract: The platelet indices Mean Platelet Volume (MPV), Platelet Distribution Width (PDW) and Plate-letcrit (PCT) provided by automated hematology analysis are rarely used in clinical practice. Platelets play a central role in the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and high MPV has been associated to more reactive platelets and regarded as an independent risk factor for myocardial infarction. In this study, platelet indices were evaluated in 39 patients with ACS presenting two altered biochemical parameters, C reactive protein (CRP) and creatine kinase fraction MB (CK-MB). The results obtained showed significantly higher MPV and PDW values in the group with ACS in comparison to the control group. Also observed was a weak but significant positive correlation between MPV and CK-MB. In view of findings of previous studies, which have associated macroplatelets with higher thrombotic potential our results suggest that the use of the MPV and PDW indices as additional and complementary markers may contribute to the investigation and follow-up of thrombotic risk in patients with ACS.

PURPOSE: to investigate the acquisition of coronal fricatives by public county schools' children of Recife's metropolitan region. METHODS: 40 children from four schools with ages between 2 and 6 year and eleven month old, whereas 20 were males and 20 females. The instrument applied for data collection was 83 images which could be referred to with 32 words carrying the phoneme target /s/, 11 which had the /z/ phoneme target, 21 with the /∫/ and 19 with the / /; these were selected from tonicity and syllabic structure. The children were divided, according to their age, into ten different groups of four children each. The cut-point for considering an indicative of stability of the aim-phoneme was 80% of production. RESULTS: the beginning of coronal fricatives' production took place at ages 2:0-2:5. It has been noticed that the phonemes /∫/, / / e /z/ were acquired at ages 3:0-3:5 and the phoneme /s/ at age

Abstract: acute bacterial meningitis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality among children less than five years old. haemophilus influenzae, streptococcus pneumoniae and neisseria meningitidis are the most important agents of bacterial meningitis in developing countries. the development of the conjugate vaccines in the beginning of the 90's, especially type b h. influenzae (hib), and more recently the heptavalent pneumococcal and the serogroup c meningococcal vaccines, have contributed directly to changes in the epidemiological profile of these invasive diseases (direct effect) and of their carriage status (indirect effect). we review the impact of the hib conjugate vaccine in latin american countries, where this vaccine has been implemented, and the potential of pneumococcal and meningococcal conjugate vaccines for the reduction of meningitis worldwide. we also address constraints for the development and delivery of these vaccines and review new candidate state-of-the-art vaccines. the greatest challenge, undoubtedly, is to implement these vaccines worldwide, especially in the developing regions.

Abstract:

This work describes the chemical composition of the essential oils extracted from fresh leaves of Lippia origanoides Kunth. and Mentha spicata L. and their antioxidant and insecticidal activities. The essential oils were extracted by steam distillation using a modified Clevenger apparatus and subsequently analyzed by gas chromatography-flame ionization detector and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The antioxidant activities were determined by the β-carotene-linoleic acid method and by sequestration of the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hidrazila radical. The concentrations of the essential oils and the synthetic standard, butylated hydroxyltoluene, were 25, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300 and 500 μg mL-1. Insecticidal activity was analyzed by non-preference with choice and no choice against the aphid Myzus persicae Sulzer. Gas chromatography analysis of the essential oil from Lippia origanoides Kunth. revealed carvacrol (41.51%), p-cymene (18.36%), γ-terpinene (17.03%) and thymol (4.86%) as major constituents, and the essential oil from Mentha spicata L. contained piperitona (81.18%), piperitenone (14.57%) and limonene (1.47%) as the principal components. The essential oils and the standard exhibited dose-dependent antioxidant activities at the concentrations tested. The essential oils were shown to be potential agents in the integrated management of the aphid
