Abstract: In the final stages of a plant breeding program, a crucial step is the multiplication of seeds in production fields. Besides a solid planning, the seeds multiplication needs a special attention to guarantee seeds with high quality, genetic integrity, high germination and vigor to the farmer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiologic quality, enzymatic expression and respiratory activity of seeds of 20 elite upland rice lines adapted to the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, from the upland rice breeding program from three Brazilians research institutions. The quality parameters evaluated were root protrusion, number of normal seedlings in the germination test, number of normal seedlings in the germination first count, initial stand from emergence test, speed of emergence index, seedlings shoot and root length, percentage of O2 and CO2 from respiratory activity and the expression pattern of the enzymes alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH). The seeds quality varied among lines, allowing the selection of lines with best performance. The respiratory activity was lower in seeds of lines with high quality. The enzyme ADH was an excellent marker to infer about the quality of seeds, and the variation in the expression of MDH did not depend on the quality of rice seeds. The lines BRS Esmeralda, CMG1896 and CMG1509 showed high physiologic quality in their seeds, and therefore, they should receive higher attention in rice breeding programs.

Design: Review of a medical chart from a patient with Arnold-Chiari syndrome that underwent to cochlear implant surgery. Case report: A 6 year-old female, with meningomyelocele and congenital hydrocephalus, deaf in the past 3 years, after meningitis. At that time, she used oral language with adequate speech development. Tone audiometry revealed bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss. The MRI was compatible with the Arnold-Chiari syndrome. Cochlear implantation was performed on the left ear with MED-EL? Implant (model SONATATi100). Currently, the child is 12 year-old, performs speech therapy three times a week, with good hearing and language development. Conclusion: Despite the presence of Arnold-Chiari syndrome (Chiari type II) with neurological disorders and with ventriculoperitoneal shunt, patient had good hearing results after cochlear implant surgery.

Abstract: throughout the history of the public health system, several care models have been constructed to guide actions in this field, with particular emphasis on the biomedical model, the community medicine model and the "in defense of life" model. this article deals with the analysis of a drug prevention project in the school environment, conducted in santa maria (rio grande do sul), and discusses the relationship of this proposal with the models of health care. from this experiment, we were able to observe that it is necessary to break with the hegemonic paradigm and to structure drug prevention activity in accordance with alternative models, thereby permitting students, teachers and community to partake on the role of promoters of their own health.

Abstract: the objective of the research was to evaluate the composition and acceptance of pork sausages manufactured with whey protein concentrate (wpc) or with protein concentrate containing high level of b-lactoglobulin (hereof called b-lactoglobulin) as fat substitutes. seven treatments were established, a control containing 20% of fat, and six containing different levels of wpc or b-lactoglobulin addition (three treatments containing 10% of fat and 0.2%, 0.5% or 1.0% of wpc, and three treatments containing 10% of fat and 0.1%, 0.3% or 0.6% of b-lactoglobulin). each treatment was repeated in five batches, and the samples of each batch was evaluated the first and seventh day after processing and storage at 4°c. the samples were analyzed for protein (g 100g-1), fat (g 100g-1), moisture content (g 100g-1), caloric value (kcal/g) and sensory analyses. the results of protein, fat and caloric value were different between the group control and the other treatments (p£0.05). additionally, the moisture content and sensory analyses results showed that there was no difference (p>0.05) for the different treatments used in this experiment. the protein concentrates were efficient for the fat substitution in pork sausages, in the treatment levels used in the current experiment, complying with the specifications of the brazilian legal requirements.

Abstract: this study aimed to characterize the impact of violence suffered by women in family relationship dynamics and identify the transgenerational violence in women who suffered physical aggression. the study was exploratory-descriptive and adopted a qualitative methodology. the participants were 10 women who had suffered physical violence and had made a complaint in a police station for the care of women. data collection was conducted through semi-structured interview which subsidized the construction of the family genogram. for data analysis, the empirical basis theory (grounded theory) and the software atlas / ti 5.0 were used. there are a number of reasons for the participants to have remained with the aggressors, despite having suffered other situations of violence and the impact of violence on children and adolescents who lived next to them. with the construction of the genogram, the transgenerational violence was revealed, and the members of their families of origin had a similar pattern of family relationship. it is understood that the results of this study reinforce gender relations and violence as transgenerational important points to consider when thinking and implementing research, policies and actions related to women in violent situations.
