Salud mental , 2008,

Abstract: introduction tobacco use is considered a worldwide public health problem because of the amount of death and disease it causes. the who reports that 30% of the adult population in the world are cigarette smokers, and that nearly five million of these will die within one year. prospective studies performed by the who show that if current tobacco use continues, in 2020 there will be 8.4 million deaths due to tobacco-related diseases every year; seven out of 10 of these deaths will occur in emergent countries, like mexico. more than 53000 tobacco users die every year in mexico because of tobacco-related diseases, and at least 147 of these die daily. data from the national addictions survey (nas) 2002 showed that 26.4% of the people between 12 and 65 years old were active tobacco consumers; this amounted to nearly 14 million individuals. of these, 7.1% were under 18 years old. the number of tobacco consumers in mexico has increased from nine million in 1988 to 14 million in 2002. according to the nas, 52% of the users smoke on a daily basis, and 61.4% of them began smoking when they were minors. to know the actual consumption levels, it is important to consider some factors: the number of cigarettes a person smokes, the different situations where a person smokes, and the social and physical consequences of smoking. thus, it would be possible to develop a consumer classification (i. e. soft consumers, mild consumers, and hard consumers). there may be numerous causes for a person to be ill. when speaking about the harmful effects of tobacco use, the literature is clear in stating that these begin with the first cigarette smoked. however, it can take up to 30 years for a consumer to notice the damage on his health after his/her consumption began; but within the first ten years there are problems in lung function and in physical endurance. when a person starts smoking there are acute and unpleasant side effects that are rarely associated with smoked tobacco use. consumption

Background: Sexual assault is a traumatic and painful event, which affects victims of both genders, across all socioeconomic levels, with serious consequences for physical, psychological, and social health. Objective: Determine the characteristics of sexual assault and its consequences in adolescents at a sexual and reproductive health center. Method: Analytic and cross-sectional study of 573 adolescents seen at a reproductive medicine center (CEMERA) in the period 2003-2010 and who reported history of sexual abuse. Patient's clinical records were reviewed to study the characteristics as well as the consequences of sexual abuse. Results: The abuse was reported as sexual abuse in 86.5% of the cases and as rape in 13.5%. In 48.5% of the cases, the aggressors were relatives of the victims. The most vulnerable group is between 5-9 of age, representing 41.2% of the cases. For 39.2% of the cases, the sexual abuse was reiterative, and in 43.4 %, the abuse took place on the victim's home. 70% of the victims told someone about the abuse; 45.9% of those revealed their abuse in a dela

Abstract: In this study we have sampled over 800 unrelated individuals from the population of Spain, and have genotyped them with a genome-wide coverage. We have carried out linkage disequilibrium, haplotype, population structure and copy-number variation (CNV) analyses, and have compared these estimates of the Spanish population with existing data from similar efforts. In general, the Spanish population is similar to the Western and Northern Europeans, but has a more diverse haplotypic structure. Moreover, the Spanish population is also largely homogeneous within itself, although patterns of micro-structure may be able to predict locations of origin from distant regions. Finally, we also present the first characterization of a CNV map of the Spanish population. These results and original data are made available to the scientific community. The large genotyping studies in the last decade have revolutionize genetic studies. Our current ability to characterize the human genome is unprecedented [1-3], and is contributing to improve our understanding of the genetic etiology of common diseases.Genetic admixture is one of the caveats for genetic association studies [4], and has fostered the comparative study of the genetic structure of different human populations. A large number of studies are underway to identify the similarities and differences among existing human populations [2,3]. These studies started comparing the general human populations such as Africans, Asians and Europeans, but have recently focused on the more specific subgroups within them [5-8]. It seems that, as genetically similar as humans are, we can now tune the genetic "microscope" so that subtle genetic differences among related subpopulations can be detected [9], even among regions within a country [10,11].The Neocodex Biobank and Genome Research Consortium is planning a number of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in several complex phenotypes. Our basic and general strategy will consist in the systematic
Prevalencia de Trichomonas vaginalis en trabajadores sexuales

Medicina (Buenos Aires) , 2011,
Abstract: trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection (sti) usually associated to vaginitis, urethritis, cervicitis and pelvic inflammatory disease, which can cause infertility. the aim of this retrospective longitudinal study was to determine trichomonas vaginalis prevalence in a population of male and female sex workers in mendoza, argentina. a cohort of 720 people who attended the sti program in this province was retrospectively analyzed. from february 2007 up to june 2009, 1692 samples were processed using a reposition sampling method. the age and sex distribution of the population was: 687 women/33 men, from 15 to 65 years old. trichomoniasis prevalence determined for this population at risk was 7.6% in women only, men did not present infection. the high prevalence shown for this risk group suggests a great vulnerability of this population to contract other more serious stis. in another sense, it also shows a remarkable lack in the use of mechanical barriers to prevent sexually transmitted diseases (stds). the present research justifies the elaboration of standardized procedures guide to diagnose t. vaginalis within the framework of the reproductive health program (prosar).

Computación y Sistemas , 2008,
Abstract: ambient computing refers to the development of physical environments enhanced through information and communication technology to better serve the needs of users. in contrast with traditional computer applications, ambient computing offers a vision in which computer support migrates from the desktop to the physical environment, thus demanding natural means of interaction, in contrast with the traditional keyboard and mouse. this approach to computing is particularly well suited for working environments characterized by local mobility, frequent activity switching, and intense collaboration, as it is often the case in healthcare. this paper provides a comprehensive overview of research conducted in mexico for several years towards the development of an ambient computing environment in support of hospital work, the ihospital. the paper describes the research methodology used, major findings, ambient computing technology that has been designed and developed as a response to the needs identified, and results from its evaluation with potential users.

Abstract: the a thalassaemia diseases in most cases are caused by deletions that affect one or two of the a genes, being less frequent the cases due to punctual mutations, insertions or deletions of a few pairs of bases, which have been denominated no deletion a thalassaemias. the objective of this investigation was to determine the incidence of the no deletion a thalassaemia in patients with a thalassaemia using molecular biology techniques. we studied 517 individuals of the san carlos hospital (thalassemia molecular research center, madrid-spain) between january 2001 and december 2003, in whom iron deficiency anemia had been ruled out, that presented microcytosis and hypochromia and that presented normal hba2, hbf and eef from normal hbs. the two types of no deletion a thalassaemia most frequently described in the mediterranean were studied: 1) a hph due to deletion of 5bp in the ivs i and 2) anco due to a change in the initiation codon of the gene. of the 517 cases studied, 40 (7.7% of the cases) represented a no deletion a thalassaemia. of these cases, 28 were positive for ahph of the a2 gene, 24 in the heterozygote state, one homozygote and three double heterozygotes associated with the 3,7 kb deletion. the remaining 12 cases were positive for the anco of the a2 gene, 10 heterozygotes, one homozygote and one double heterozygote associated with the 4,2 kb deletion. the no deletion a thalassaemias represent < 8% from the cases in our environment. the ahph is the most frequent type of no deletion a thalassaemia and its haematological abnormalities are more manifest that the ones present in the cases of anco
