Metabolic abnormalities and overweight in HIV/AIDS persons-treated with antiretroviral therapy
Leite, Luísa Helena Maia;Sampaio, Ana Beatriz de Mattos Marinho;
Revista de Nutri??o , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-52732008000300002
Abstract: objective: to describe the proportion of overweight among patients with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome and correlate overweight and highly active antiretroviral therapy with metabolic complications. methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted among human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome outpatients undergoing nutritional therapy from 2000 to 2006 in a university health center. the sample consisted of 393 human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome patients. nutritional and medical records were used as a source of data on personal, clinical and biochemical information. data analysis included descriptive statistics and the chi-square test. results: sixty-nine percent of the patients were males aging from 26 to 49 years. overweight and obesity were identified in 49% of this population. the most important metabolic complications were low levels of high-density lipoprotein (70%) and high levels of triglycerides (48%) and cholesterol (40%). higher body mass index was associated with higher lipid levels and more evidence of insulin resistance. conclusion: this study demonstrated an important proportion of overweight and obesity among human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome patients. these results suggest that nutritional interventions and lifestyle modifications may be useful strategies to decrease the cardiovascular risk in this population.
Risco cardiovascular: marcadores antropométricos, clínicos e dietéticos em indivíduos infectados pelo vírus HIV
Leite, Luísa Helena Maia;Sampaio, Ana Beatriz de Mattos Marinho;
Revista de Nutri??o , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-52732011000100008
Abstract: objective: this study described the anthropometric, clinical and dietary markers associated with cardiovascular risk in hiv-infected persons. methods: a cross-sectional study was done with 100 adults with hiv/aids from rio de janeiro city. the cardiovascular risk was estimated by the framingham risk score. dietary intake was evaluated by a 24-hour dietary recall and a food frequency questionnaire. variables were compared by the student's t- and chi-square tests. results: most of the patients were males (63%) with a mean age of 41.8 years, sd=9.6 years and 77% were taking antiretroviral drugs. the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 52%, overweight, 47%, and 53% had a framingham risk score >10%. the main cardiovascular risk factors potentially modifiable were: low high-density lipoprotein (70%), high cholesterol (35%), hypertension (35%), smoking (23%) and high blood glucose level (21%). persons with framingham risk score >10% had a tendency to consume diets high in cholesterol (p=0.720), sodium (p=0.898), sugar/sugary foods (p=0.032) and low in fiber (p=0.273), and consumed more alcoholic beverages (p=0.053). lifestyle assessment revealed higher smoking prevalence and low levels of physical activity in the group with framingham risk score >10, but the differences were not significant. conclusion: the results of this study show that patients with hiv/aids under the highly active antiretroviral therapy and higher framingham risk score do not follow the recommendations for the primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases, reinforcing the need of encouraging them to make lifelong healthy food choices, stop smoking and increase their levels of physical activity.

Revista da Associa??o Médica Brasileira , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-42302006000600018
Abstract: objective: to evaluate the cognitive performance of the elderly with psychosis, depression and dementia in a mental health outpatient unit. methods: the mini-mental state examination (mmse) and the cambridge cognitive examination (camcog) were applied to 86 patients above 60 years of age referred for evaluation due to memory complaints. patients were diagnosed according to dsm iv criteria. socio-demographic data were expressed as means (standard deviation); mmse and camcog score of patients with psychosis, dementia and mood disorders were compared using student's t test and anova. results: of the total sample (age: 70.87 (sd=6.61); male=32; female=54; illiterate=41, educated=45; 17 (19.7%) had dementia, 11 (12.8%) psychosis and 58 (67.4%) mood disorders. the mmse of the total sample was 21.07 (sd=6.61) and the camcog = 61.50 (sd=19.78). mmse/camcog of each diagnosis: dementia: 16.76 (sd=6.25)/48(sd=20.49); psychosis: 20.9 (sd=5.87)/60.09 (sd=13.54); mood disorders: 22.36 (sd=5.49)/66.03 (sd=18.88). the mmse and camcog scores of patients with dementia were significantly lower than those of patients with mood disorders (anova p < 0.01). the score of patients with psychosis was not different from scores of those with dementia and mood disorders (p >0.05). conclusion: a brief cognitive evaluation permits a differentiation between dementia and depression but not between psychosis and depression in elderly patients of a psychiatric outpatient unit, who had complained of memory impairment. these data may be useful to develop an easy and low cost protocol to attend the population of public health services.

Abstract: a series of 15 ω-aminoalkoxylxanthones containing methyl, ethyl, propyl, tert-butylamino and piperidinyl moieties were synthesized from a natural xanthone isolated from a lichen species. these compounds were tested for their in vitro antibacterial properties against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and cytotoxicity against a number of human tumor cell lines was too evaluated. the newly synthesized derivatives revealed selective activity against staphylococcus aureus (gram-positive), and the most promising results are for a multidrug resistant strain, for which six of these compounds showed good activity (mics 4 μg/ml). many derivatives inhibited tumor cells growth and most compounds were active on multiple lines.

Abstract: Este trabalho apresenta a aplica o do índice RDE (Rela o Declividade-Extens o) para a identifica o de regi es sujeitasa deforma es tect nicas ao longo da bacia hidrográfica do Rio do Peixe, regi o ocidental paulista.

Freitas, Ana Beatriz Machado de;
Revista Brasileira de Linguística Aplicada , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-63982012000100009
Abstract: augmentative and / or alternative communication is a field of assistive technology which encompasses resources to help people with severe speech and language impairments to express themselves. however, communication does not always overcome functional responses within a limited linguistic repertoire. the article discusses language and subject of enunciation, their relations with authorship development and as well as implications to subjective constitution of the non-speech people. theoretically it was based on the bakhtin’s enunciative-discursive principles and on the cultural historical theory of human development. it emphasizes the role and responsibility of the mediator when he contributes, through his dialogue, to increase a significant communication and authorship or, conversely, when he can restrict these possibilities.
