Jesus, Pedro A.P.;Vieira-de-Melo, Rodrigo M.;Reis, Francisco J.F.B.;Viana, Leila C.;Lacerda, Amanda;Dias, Jesangeli S.;Oliveira-Filho, Jamary;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2006000200007
Abstract: cognitive symptoms are common in patients with congestive heart failure (chf) and are usually attributed to low cerebral blood flow. in the present study, we aimed to evaluate global cognitive function (mini mental state exam mmse) in relation to both cardiac function (evaluated by echocardiogram) and cerebrovascular hemodynamics (evaluated by transcranial doppler tcd) in chf patients. in 83 patients studied, no correlation was found between echocardiographic parameters and mmse scores. in contrast, a significant correlation was found between right middle cerebral artery (rmca) mean flow velocity and mmse score (r=0.231 p=0.039), as well as between rmca pulsatility index and mmse score (rs= -0.292 p=0.015). after excluding patients with a previous history of stroke, only rmca pulsatility index correlated with mmse score (rs=-0,314 p=0,007). the relationship between high cerebrovascular resistance and worse cognitive scores suggest that microembolism may be responsible for a significant proportion of cognitive symptoms in chf patients.

The valves inside veins have an important function in directing blood to the heart. The objective of this research was to perform a macro- and microscopic study of heart vein valves in pig hearts, and establish possible morphofunctional correlations. The hearts of 30 pigs from the Landrace and Large White breeds were used, of both sexes, which were submitted to a morphometric and histological study in a scanning electronic microscope. Valves were found in the interior of the magna and median heart veins in 100% of studied cases. In the hearts used for histological analysis, 291 valves were found, of which 178 were unicuspid (61.17%), 86 bicuspid (29.65%), and 27 tricuspid (9.28%). The valves found in the wall of magna and median heart vein were made up of collagen, elastic andmuscle fiber beams. It is concluded that valves are frequently found in the heart veins of pigs, with predominance in the proximal half, both in magna heart vein as in the median heart vein.

All types of immobilization contribute to muscular atrophy and, in a few days, the muscles undergo volume reduction or loss of function, known as atrophy. Thus, with one or two weeks of immobilization, metabolic activities are considerably reduced and muscle fibers are replaced by dense fibrous scar tissue. This study has as objective to analyze the effect of joint immobilization of the soleus muscle of posterior members of rats on morphometric profile view, at periods of 7 and 14 days. Ten male Rattus navergicus albinus, Wistar variety, were used, separated into two groups of 5 animals each, with the first group submitted to immobilization for 7 days and the second for 14 days. The experiment control was acquired from the right contralateral member of each animal. The immobilization of the left posterior member was done by adapted orthesis. The morphometric analy
