Castro, Lucia Rabello de;Mattos, Amana Rocha;Juncken, Elaine Teixeira;Monteiro, Renata Alves de Paula;Villela, Helena Antunes Maciel;
Psicologia em Estudo , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-73722006000200023
Abstract: the present work discusses the construction of 'otherness' understood as a permanent elaboration of the position of the subject facing the demands of contemporary subjetivation. the notion of difference is evoked in order to deal with the subjective movement, open and unstable, in the construction process of the other and of self. the contemporary city is brought here, through the discursive production of young people, in an intervention-research project, in which about 60 youth in the city of rio de janeiro, with ages between 11 and 13, from five different institutions, were invited to talk about their relationships with the other in the city. in this project, named city workshops, the youth debated about their difficulties in living together with the other and about the conflicts and the strangeness inherent in this relationship. through the analysis of group narratives, it was possible to establish the most significant figures of 'otherness' such as 'the loner', 'the poor' and 'the fox', which, regarded here as 'scales', determine new productions of meaning in the relationship i- the other in the city. we discussed how these figures of otherness are related to conflicts produced by contemporary demands, such as, individualization and the need to be included in the consumption society.

(Apoio: CAPES) The present work discusses “The metropolis and the mental life”, Georg Simmel's seminal 1903 text, using its main points to underline contemporary experiences of freedom in urban spaces. From its release, Simmel's text has become a reference in the social sciences for studies of Modernity, individualism and the subjectivities produced in daily metropolis life. Positing these themes as the ground for any significant discussion about freedom, independence and autonomy, we use Simmel’s arguments, and other authors that comment on his text, as a base toward thoughts about these topics. I suggest an reexamination of the valorization of individual freedom as a freedom of choice, and how this conception of freedom divides citizens from collective pursuits and, consequently, the political realm.

Oil, Product Price Deregulation and National Development in Nigeria

Pakistan Journal of Social Sciences , 2012, DOI: 10.3923/pjssci.2011.294.300
Abstract: Through the decades, the determination of the appropriate pricing mechanics of petroleum products has remained a thorny issue in Nigeria. Two schools of thought, producing robust debates have emerged over the issue. Pro-deregulation or liberalization theorists champion the cause for the determination of retail prices by market forces. They argue that public sector subsidies are unsustainable, wasteful and lead to graft in the downstream sub-industry. There is an abundance of demonstrable credit in this standpoint; institutional and infrastructural decay in the distribution chain have for long, remained the hallmark of government monopoly. But market forces do not always produce optimal outcomes. These concerns are fueled by skepticisms about wages, labour and the scope of distribution markets. There is also evidence showing a disconnect between the petroleum economy and other sectors of the national economy. The study finds that the just distribution of economic benefits derived from petroleum production has proven elusive.
Communication: A Challenge to the Nigerian Church
Chika Asogwa,Damian Amana
Asian Culture and History , 2012, DOI: 10.5539/ach.v4n1p90
Abstract: This paper took off recognizing the zeal of the African Church specifically the Nigerian Church. The relationship between communication and the community was discussed in this paper, good communication is very essential for the growth of every human community and where this is lacking there will be a problem as in the Nigerian Church. In discussing the communicative nature of the ecclesial community, it clearly said that the church is born out of the communication of the “Word” of the father that took flesh in the world (incarnation). This paper further explored the basic communication problems of the Nigerian Church and also offered some recommendations. The Catholic Church in Nigeria needs to “purge itself of non-communicational practices and implant within its fabric, the christo-centric model of a participatory communication”.

Journal of Geoscience and Environment Protection (GEP) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/gep.2018.67005
Abstract: This study investigated the antifungal activity of leaf extracts of Prosopis africana and Anacardium occidentale against Macrophomina phaseolina, the causal agent of root rot of Sesamum indicum L. Phytochemical analysis of the two plants showed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, tannins, flavonoids and anthraquinones in petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, methanol and water extracts. The effectiveness of the two medicinal plants viz: P. africana and A. occidentale was tested against the causative agent of root rot of Sesamum indicum L. The effect of plant leaf extracts on mycelia growth of the test organism shows that both P. africana and A. anacardium reduced the mycelia growth significantly as compared to the control (plate, 2, 3, 4). The antifungal property of P. africana and A. occidentale makes these plants of potential interest for the control of the fungi Macrophomina phaseolina.
