Alvaro Franco
This paper summarizes both, author's experience and a monographic review of current aspects in children and adolescent liaison psychiatry. From conceptual definitions, aspects regarding children's developmental ideas about illness and death are studied. Types of consultations are outlined, with brief references to the more frequent chief complaints.
éTICA Y CONDUCTAS SUICIDAS
FRANCO ZULUAGA,ALVARO;
Revista Colombiana de Psiquiatría , 2001,
Abstract: from a bioethical perpective, this paper reviews conflicts faced by psychiatrists and other physicians with suicidal patients in the emergency room. four ethical theories are presented: utilitarism or searching the best consepuences; kantism, focused on priciples rather than in consequences; liberal individualism, with human rights protecting life, freedom, expression and property: and principialism or common moral based on principles. it also studies suicidal behaviors through bioethical priciples (autonomy, harmless, beneficial and fair approaches) and poses a treatment model for this type of behaviors.
Referentes teóricos para el análisis de la reforma del sistema de salud colombiano
Franco-Giraldo,Alvaro;
Revista Gerencia y Políticas de Salud , 2012,
Abstract: the purpose of this topic review was to define themes for interpreting the health reform and guide a new model system. the method was a literature review on theories of public policy, relating to the analysis, quasi-markets in health and integrated networks of health services (inhs) and primary health care (phc). it contrasts the logic of public health (collective-citizen) and micro economic logic (individual-consumer). it analyzed the colombian reform (law 100/93 and 1438/2001), based on theories of policy choice, classical approaches cycle policies and neoclassical theory, the structural reform based on the right to health, equity and theories of public policy (critical and constructivist approach). it concludes a need to continue the ideological debate on structural reform of the health system. similarly, continue with technical developments, instrumental and implement strategies for integrated networks of health services and primary health care, to strengthen integrated health systems.
éTICA Y CONDUCTAS SUICIDAS ETHICS AND SUICIDAL BEHAVIORS
ALVARO FRANCO ZULUAGA
From a bioethical perpective, this paper reviews conflicts faced by psychiatrists and other physicians with suicidal patients in the emergency room.
Primary Health Care (phc): Back to the Past?
Alvaro Franco-Giraldo
Revista Facultad Nacional de Salud Pública , 2012,
Abstract: Primary health care is analyzed as the alternative throughwhich health systems will recover the role they had during thelate twentieth century: working with other sectors to implementhealth promotion actions to improve the users’ quality of lifeand equity. A renewal is presented in recognition of the effortsduring the final century to establish primary care policies andprograms as the core of the health systems, emphasizing thereorientation of health services. This paper discusses the principles and methods establishedby the new proposal for primary health care. This renewalproposal raises expectations regarding its return to the past,not only as a strategy but also because it raises hopes at a timeof global crisis whose impact on health services is evident.The first question posed here is: Is there really a renewal?The discussion focuses on the following topics: phc and thedeterioration of health indicators in many areas in the world,social inequalities and health inequities, the weaknesses inthe declarations of Alma Ata understood as “medicine forthe poor,” the renewal of phc as opposed to the critical healthstatus in countries and the opposing progress of the neoliberalglobalization, phc and the political conceptions of the Right,phc and the reform to the reform of the health systems;coordination of phc with health promotion and public health,the changes in the contexts and the new economic crisis in thisglobal event. The paper concludes with a call to revitalize theprocesses of the health systems from a political standpoint, andto rethink the sanitary reforms of the health systems basing thereasoning on primary health care, which is the focus of theirtransformation.
A Look at Sequential Normal Scores and How They Apply to Financial Data Analysis  [PDF]

Journal of Applied Mathematics and Physics (JAMP) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/jamp.2018.64069
Abstract: Statistical methods for analyzing economic data need to be timely, accurate and easy to compute. To accomplish this, parametric models are often assumed, but they are at best approximate, and often lack a good fit in the tails of the distribution where much of the interesting data are concentrated. Therefore, nonparametric methods have been extensively examined as alternatives to the constrictive assumptions of parametric models. This paper examines the use of Sequential Normal Scores (SNS) for transforming time series data with unknown distributions into time series data that are approximately standard-normally distributed. Particular attention is directed toward detecting outliers (out-of-control values), and applying subsequent analytic methods such as CUSUMs and Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (EWMA) schemes. Two examples of stock market data are presented for illustration.

Neotropical Entomology , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1519-566X2004000300004
Abstract: the effect of seven natural diets on the development and reproduction of bonagota cranaodes (meyrick) was evaluated under laboratory conditions. the experiments were carried out at the temperature of 23 ± 1oc, with 70 ± 10% of rh and a photoperiod of 16:8h (l:d). the larvae were reared on apple, grapevine and honeysuckle (lonicera japonica). on the first two foods three types of diet were used: spring leaves, summer leaves and fruits. the number of instars varied from five to seven. the larvae reared on apple leaves had, in general, fewer instars than those reared on grapevine and honeysuckle leaves. the duration of larval development differed between diets. the larvae reared on spring apple leaves showed the shortest duration, and those on fruit the longest. the larvae survival was lower on fruit than on leaves, and on apples it was particularly low (17.8%). the female pupae reared on honeysuckle were heavier than those reared on the other diets. the cycle from the egg to the emergence of adults varied between 41 days on spring apple leaves and 60 days on apples. the females reared on honeysuckle and spring apple leaves were the most fecund, whereas the females on apples did not oviposit. honeysuckle and spring leaves were the most suitable foods. apples, on the other hand, were the least suitable diet, which leads one to think that larvae could hardly complete their whole cycle on this fruit.
Effects of larval diet on the development and reproduction of Argyrotaenia sphaleropa (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)
Bentancourt, Carlos M.;Scatoni, Iris B.;Gonzalez, Alvaro;Franco, Jorge;
Neotropical Entomology , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S1519-566X2003000400004
Abstract: the effect of six natural diets on the development and reproduction of argyrotaenia sphaleropa (meyrick) was measured under laboratory conditions, at 23 ±1oc temperature, 70 ± 10% rh, and photoperiod of 16l:8d. larvae were reared on three types of diet (spring leaves, summer leaves and fruits) from two different host plants (apple tree and grapevine). larval development, number of instars, survival, weight of pupae, fecundity, and fertility varied as a function of diets. the shortest time span of larval development, the greatest pupal weight, and the greatest adult fecundity and fertility was observed on insects feeding on spring apple leaves. the duration of larval development was longer on fruits than on leaves. the lowest larval survival occurred on apple fruits. larvae with a higher number of instars generally had an increase in the time span of larval development. larval development time span (4 out of 6 treatments) as well as pupal development time span (5 out of 6 treatments) was sex dependant. on all diets the females deposited the highest number of eggs on the first day of oviposition. the results obtained reinforce the hypothesis that the larvae of a. sphaleropa first feed on both apple and grapevine leaves, and then move to the fruits, where they cause serious damage.

Italian Journal of Agronomy , 2012, DOI: 10.4081/ija.2012.e31
Abstract: The increasing demand for energy and expected shortage in the medium term, solicit innovative energy strategies to fulfill the increasing gap between demand-supply. For this purpose it is important to evaluate the potential supply of the energy crops and finding the areas of EU where it is most convenient. This paper proposes an agro-energy supply chain approach to planning the biofuel supply chain at a regional level. The proposed methodology is the result of an interdisciplinary team work and is aimed to evaluate the potential supply of land for the energy production and the efficiency of the processing plants considering simultaneously economic, energy and environmental targets. The crop simulation, on the basis of this approach, takes into account environmental and agricultural variables (soil, climate, crop, agronomic technique) that affect yields, energy and economic costs of the agricultural phase. The use of the Dijkstra’s algorithm allows minimizing the biomass transport path from farm to collecting points and the processing plant, to reduce both the transport cost and the energy consumption. Finally, a global sustainability index (ACSI, Agro-energy Chain Sustainability Index) is computed combining economic, energy and environmental aspects to evaluate the sustainability of the Agroenergy supply chain (AESC) on the territory. The empirical part consists in a pilot study applied to the whole plain of Friuli Venezia Giulia (FVG) a region situated in the North-Eastern part of Italy covering about 161,300 ha. The simulation has been applied to the maize cultivation using three different technologies (different levels of irrigation and nitrogen fertilization: low, medium and high input). The higher input technologies allow to achieve higher crop yields, but affect negatively both the economic and energy balances. Low input levels provides, on the average, the most favourable energy and economic balances. ACSI indicates that low inputs levels ensure a more widespread sustainability of the agro-energy chain in the region. High ACSI values for high input levels are observed only for areas with very high yields or near the processing plant.
