Botulinum toxin injection: a review of injection principles and protocols
Rapp, David E.;Lucioni, Alvaro;Bales, Gregory T.;
International braz j urol , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1677-55382007000200002
Abstract: despite the favorable outcomes seen using botulinum toxin (btx) for voiding dysfunction using btx, a standardized technique and protocol for toxin injection is not defined. we reviewed the current literature on intravesical btx injection for do (detrusor overactivity). specific attention was placed on defining optimal injection protocol, including dose, volume, and injection sites. in addition, we sought to describe a standard technique to btx injection.
Surgical technique using AdVance? Sling placement in the treatment of post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence
Rapp, David E.;Reynolds, W. Stuart;Lucioni, Alvaro;Bales, Gregory T.;
International braz j urol , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1677-55382007000200015
Abstract: objectives: to describe and illustrate a new minimally invasive approach to the treatment of male stress urinary incontinence following prostatectomy. surgical technique: our initial experience consisted of four patients treated with the advance sling for post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence. sling placement involves the following steps: 1. urethral dissection and mobilization, 2. identification of surgical landmarks, 3. placement of needle passers through the obturator foramen, 4. mesh advancement, 5. mesh tensioning and fixation, 6. incision closure. comments: based on our initial experience, we believe that the advance male sling system may be a safe technique for the treatment of male stress urinary incontinence. this technique is easy to perform and may offer a reproducible, transobturator approach. further patient accrual is ongoing to assess the safety and reproducibility of this technique. also, additional study will focus on efficacy standards and complication rates.
Teacher Education Reform in the United States and the Theoretical Constructs of Stakeholder Mediation )
International Journal of Education Policy and Leadership , 2007,
Abstract: In the United States, 48 of the 50 states have adopted standards-based policies that attempt to reform teacher education and licensing from an input-based course and credit system to one based on outcomes and performance through their authority to approve preparation programs. This article draws from qualitative, collective case study research that examines implementation tensions between the new program approval policies and the program administrators, faculty, and students of teaching at three Wisconsin teacher-preparing institutions.The findings suggest that stakeholders' beliefs and sensemaking mediate the policy directives to the point that program completers continue to receive the same preparation despite reform efforts. The theoretical constructs to support this claim are presented and potentially shed light on stakeholder mediation in other educationreform efforts.

Properly twisted groups and their algebras
John W. Bales
Mathematics , 2011,
Abstract: A twist property is developed which imparts certain properties on the twisted group algebra. These include an involution * satisfying (xy)*=y*x* and an inner product satisfying = and =. Examples of twisted group algebras having this property are the Cayley-Dickson algebras and Clifford algebras.
A catalog of Cayley-Dickson-like products
John W. Bales
Mathematics , 2011,
Abstract: A catalog of all 32 Cayley-Dickson-like doubling products on ordered pairs (a,b),(c,d) for which (1,0) is the left and right identity and for which xx* and x*x equal the square of the norm of x given the conjugate (a,b)*=(a*,-b). Only eight of these are true Cayley-Dickson doubling products, since 24 of them do not satisfy the quaternion properties. Each of the eight Cayley-Dickson products has a distinctive representation in the Fano Plane.

Cayley-Dickson and Clifford Algebras as Twisted Group Algebras
John W. Bales
Mathematics , 2011,
Abstract: The effect of some properties of twisted groups on the associated algebras, particularly Cayley-Dickson and Clifford algebras. It is conjectured that the Hilbert space of square-summable sequences is a Cayley-Dickson algebra.
Brownian dynamics simulations of an idealized chemical reaction network under spatial confinement and crowding conditions
Giovanni Bellesia,Benjamin B. Bales
Physics , 2015,
Abstract: We investigate, via Brownian dynamics simulations, the reaction dynamics of a simple, non-linear chemical network (the Willamowski-Rossler network) under spatial confinement and crowding conditions. Our results show that the presence of inert crowders has a non-nontrivial effect on the dynamics of the network and, consequently, that effective modeling efforts aiming at a general understanding of the behavior of biochemical networks in vivo should be stochastic in nature and based on an explicit representation of both spatial confinement and macromolecular crowding.
