Abstract: Background: Detection of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) in acute ischemic stroke patients poses diagnostic challenge. The aim of this study was to predict the presence of PAF by means of 12-lead ECG in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Our hypothesis was that P-wave dispersion (Pd) might be a useful marker in predicting PAF in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Methods: 12-lead resting ECGs, 24-hour Holter recordings and echocardiograms of 400 patients were analyzed retrospectively. PAF was detected in 40 patients on 24-hour Holter monitoring. Forty out of 360 age and gender matched patients without PAF were randomly chosen and assigned as the control group. Demographics, P-wave characteristics and echocardiographic findings of the patients with and without PAF were compared. Results: Maximum P-wave duration (p=0.002), Pd (p<0.001) and left atrium diameter (p=0.04) were significantly higher in patients with PAF when compared to patients without PAF. However, in binary logistic regression analysis Pd was the only independent predictor of PAF. The cut-off value of Pd for the detection of PAF was 57.5 milliseconds (msc). Area under the curve was 0.80 (p<0.001). On a single 12-lead ECG, a value higher than 57.5 msc predicted the presence of PAF with a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 73%. Conclusion: Pd on a single 12-lead ECG obtained within 24 hours of an acute ischemic stroke might help to predict PAF and reduce the risk of recurrent strokes.

International Journal of Mathematics and Mathematical Sciences , 2002, DOI: 10.1155/s0161171202012607
Abstract: The scattering number of a graph G, denoted sc(G), is defined by sc(G)=max{c(G−S)−|S|:S⫅V(G)    and   c(G−S)≠1} where c(G−S) denotes the number of components in G−S. It is one measure of graph vulnerability. In this paper, general results on the scattering number of a graph are considered. Firstly, some bounds on the scattering number are given. Further, scattering number of a binomial tree is calculated. Also several results are given about binomial trees and graph operations.

Supporting the Teaching Researcher

REDU : Revista de Docencia Universitaria , 2012,
Abstract: ABSTRACT Tensions between the research and teaching roles in university are well recognised. Past teacher training practices have only partially considered such issues and indeed the motivations, bias and priorities of the teaching researcher. This paper provides an overview of teacher training (content and process) that is suited for the research-focused environment. Particular attention is given to a training approach that has been recently adopted at Imperial College London. The approach involves practice-based and experiential learning, support and input from a broad community (e.g. peers, senior peers and education experts), clear discipline contextualisation and ownership, and emphasis on the potential parallels between teaching and research and the value of teaching to research. Furthermore, teaching practices that capitalise on researcher and institutional strengths are encouraged, and exemplified through the notion of research-supporting teaching.
Complete fourier direct magnetic resonance imaging (CFD-MRI) for diffusion MRI

Frontiers in Integrative Neuroscience , 2013, DOI: 10.3389/fnint.2013.00018
Abstract: The foundation for an accurate and unifying Fourier-based theory of diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW–MRI) is constructed by carefully re-examining the first principles of DW–MRI signal formation and deriving its mathematical model from scratch. The derivations are specifically obtained for DW–MRI signal by including all of its elements (e.g., imaging gradients) using complex values. Particle methods are utilized in contrast to conventional partial differential equations approach. The signal is shown to be the Fourier transform of the joint distribution of number of the magnetic moments (at a given location at the initial time) and magnetic moment displacement integrals. In effect, the k-space is augmented by three more dimensions, corresponding to the frequency variables dual to displacement integral vectors. The joint distribution function is recovered by applying the Fourier transform to the complete high-dimensional data set. In the process, to obtain a physically meaningful real valued distribution function, phase corrections are applied for the re-establishment of Hermitian symmetry in the signal. Consequently, the method is fully unconstrained and directly presents the distribution of displacement integrals without any assumptions such as symmetry or Markovian property. The joint distribution function is visualized with isosurfaces, which describe the displacement integrals, overlaid on the distribution map of the number of magnetic moments with low mobility. The model provides an accurate description of the molecular motion measurements via DW–MRI. The improvement of the characterization of tissue microstructure leads to a better localization, detection and assessment of biological properties such as white matter integrity. The results are demonstrated on the experimental data obtained from an ex vivo baboon brain.

Journal of Animal and Veterinary Advances , 2012,
Abstract: Queen honeybees of different races such as A. m. carnica, A. m. ligustica, A. m. caucasica (NEA-TKV) and A. m. caucasica (NEA-Camili) races and west Anatolia (Mu?la) and central Black Sea (Tokat) region genotypes were raised in central Anatolia (Sivas) from May to Aug in 2001. The acceptance ratio of larvae, the mating ratio, the preoviposition period, the volume of spermatheca and the number of spermatozoa in per spermatheca were investigated. In this study the significant (p<0.05 and p<0.01 respectively) differences were found among genotypes in terms of preoviposition periods and the volume of spermatecha. However, periods had significant (p<0.01, p<0.01, p<0.05 and p<0.01 respectively) effects on the acceptance rate of larvae, preoviposition period, volume of spermatheca and the number of spermatozoa. This result indicated that environment or climatic conditions had greater effects on the reproductive physiological characters of the queens than the genotypic structure. The preoviposition period of the A. m. carnica was (15.04?0.23 day) longer than those of the other genotypes. Queens could mate at the average temperatures at around 18-19EC. There were significant positive correlations between the temperature and the number of spermatozoa, whereas there were negative correlations between temperature and the volume of spermatheca, between the number of spermatozoa and the volume of spermatheca, between the preoviposition period and the number of spermatozoa in the per spermatheca.

Abstract: The present situation of public libraries and the policies adopted concerning public libraries in the western world and Turkey have been surveyed based on some news items, official policy papers and professional literature for the purpose of reviewing Turkish public library policy using a comparative approach. The findings of the study indicates that Turkey seems to be following the same principles with Europe in broad terms. However, it has been concluded that the full potential of the public libraries are not likely to be utilized because of the oversight of the gap in their service level compared to their European counterparts all these decades, and also because of emphasizing the cultural function of the public libraries rather than the role they can play in transitioning to knowledge society, contributing to closing the gap between the rich and the poor, helping with social inclusion and contributing to lifelong learning. Abstract: Public libraries developed in the mid-nineteenth century to meet the need of the industrial society for more knowledgeable people. The right to have access to information adopted by the United Nations in 1946 strengthened the role of the public library as a main channel for people to get information. Is there still a role for the public library in the information society? The answer to this question is yes. Just as books, the benefits of the information and communication technologies should be there for everyone. It is of great concern that there is a gap between the information rich and the poor. The public library is an opportunity to bridge this gap. The learning individual required by the knowledge based global economy will need the public library more than ever to have access both to print and electronic sources. Halk kütüphaneleri bu u urumun kapanmas i in f rsatlar yarat r. Bilgiye dayal küresel ekonomik düzenin insan olan renen birey, bas l ve elektronik kaynaklara eri ebilmek i in her zaman oldu undan daha fazla halk kütüphanelerine gereksinim duyacakt r.
