Acta Cirurgica Brasileira , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-86502003001100003
Abstract: although sentinel node procedure has been used world wide, there are many aspects to be defined and better standardized. this study address if the experimental model in rats is appropriate for sentinel node biopsy. in this model, the lymph nodes are showed by lymphoscintigraphy, they are dyed by patent blue and identified by intraoperative gamma probe detection. it isn?t necessary to use magnification for the procedure. the model demonstrated that sentinel node biopsy in rats is feasible. so, besides allowing researches in this field, the model is useful for training and diffusing this technique.

Abstract: the aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of an extract of the artemisia vulgaris l. (mugwort) on the labeling of blood constituents with technetium-99m (99mtc). blood samples from wistar rats were incubated with a mugwort extract and the radiolabeling of blood constituents was carried out. plasma and blood cells were separated by centrifugation. aliquots of plasma and blood cells were also precipitated with trichloroacetic acid and centrifuged to isolate soluble and insoluble fractions of plasma and blood cells. radioactivity in each fraction was counted and the percentages of radioactivity (%ati) was calculated. mugwort extract decreased significantly (p<0.05) the %ati on the blood compartments and on the blood cells proteins (insoluble fraction). the analysis of the results indicates that the extract could have substances that could interfere on the transport of stannous through the erythrocyte membrane alterating the labeling of blood cells with 99mtc.

Abstract: the relationships between environmental exposure to risk agents and health conditions have been studied with the aid of remote sensing imagery, a tool particularly useful in the study of vegetation cover. this study aims to evaluate the influence of environmental variables on the spatial distribution of the abundance of lutzomyia longipalpis and the reported canine and human visceral leishmaniasis (vl) cases at an urban area of campo grande, state of mato grosso do sul. the sandfly captures were performed in 13 residences that were selected by raffle considering four residences or collection station for buffer. these buffers were generated from the central house with about 50, 100 and 200 m from it in an endemic area of vl. the abundance of sandflies and human and canine cases were georreferenced using the gis software pci geomatica. the normalized difference vegetation index (ndvi) and percentage of land covered by vegetation were the environmental variables extracted from a remote sensing ikonos-2 image. the average ndvi was considered as the complexity of habitat and the standard deviation as the heterogeneity of habitat. one thousand three hundred sixty-seven specimens were collected during the catch. we found a significant positive linear correlation between the abundance of sandflies and the percentage of vegetation cover and average ndvi. however, there was no significant association between habitat heterogeneity and the abundance of these flies.

Evaluation of Dental Eruption of Third Molars in the Length of Mandible
Sousa Filho,Gilberto de; Amorim Júnior,Adelmar Afonso de; Lins,Carla Cabral dos Santos Accioly; Silva Neto,Joaquim Celestino da;
International Journal of Morphology , 2009, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-95022009000400055
Abstract: the aim of this work was to evaluate the eruption of the third molar teeth in the length of the mandible using the orthodontic documentation obtained between 2005 and 2006 as sampling method, a total of 193 cases of both sexes. the cephalometric analysis and panoramic radiographic studies were chosen from two clinics randomly selected in the city of recife - pernambuco - brazil. it was analyzed the linear size of mandibular bone by the use of mcnamara's cephalometric analysis, and also the presence or not of dental retention of inferior third molar teeth with the help of panoramic radiographic study, evaluating the commitment of these retentions with the effective length of mandible. the work concluded that when the effective mandibular length is small induces a dental retention of these third molars, mostly the left inferior third molar, which 46.5% of the cases was observed as retained. however, in 53.8% of the cases was observed the absence or no-formation of these dental germs for the left inferior third molar and 60% for the right, showing a big size of the effective length of the mandible exposing that the no-formation of these teeth was not directly related to the lack of space in the dental arch. the study demonstrated that the sexual dimorphism does not influence the eruption of these teeth, however, according to age, was emphasized a dependence concerning about dental eruption, retention or absence of left inferior third molar.

Abstract: the femoral hernia is formed when a peritoneal diverticulum l passes through the femoral ring. it occurs more often in the women and on the right side. literature is controverted on the form of the surgical ring femoral, and omissive on its dimensions. for another side, it does not supply explanations of physiological or anatomical nature that justify the greatest incidence of the femoral hernia to the right. searching to determine the form most frequent of the surgical femoral ring and its dimensions, as well as clarifying why more femoral hernias occur in the right side, the authors carried out through dissections in twenty five adult male corpses. as far as the morphology in the concerned rings shaped like a trapeze were found in the 48%; with a triangular shape 44% and of semi circular 8%. regarding the morfometry, the average size of the areas of the right side was 0,67 cm? , and the left side 0,60 cm, fact that could justify the biggest incidence of hernias in the right side
