Abstract: the purpose of this work is to estimate the density and the population size of four primate species [alouatta clamitans cabrera, 1940; callicebus nigrifrons (spix, 1823); callithrix aurita (é. geoffroy, 1812); cebus nigritus (goldfuss, 1809)] which occur in a fragment of atlantic forest of approximately 350 hectares located in pouso alegre, state of minas gerais, as well as to give subsidies for the conservation of those species in the area. the population surveying was carried out through the distance sampling method in linear transects (distance sampling). data were collected between april and august 2008 from four transects deployed in the study area. the density and population size were calculated using the software distance 5.0 and were estimated in 23,83 ± 9,78 ind./km2 for callicebus nigrifrons, 14,76 ± 5,92 ind./km2 for callithrix aurita and 7,71 ± 2,13 ind./km2 for cebus nigritus. the population size was estimated in 83,0 ± 34,0 individuals for c. nigrifrons, 52,0 ± 20,8 individuals for callithrix aurita and 27,0 ± 7,4 individuals for cebus nigritus. with regard to the howler monkey (a. clamitans), it was stated out that just a group with six individuals survive in the area. in conclusion, the chances for these isolated populations to survive are slim due to the risk of stochastic events. the creation of ecological corridors connecting the study area to the other fragments, besides the translocation of individuals from other areas of the atlantic forest to this region, could provide alternatives to ensure the viability of these populations in a long-term. therefore, it is necessary to consolidate public policies in pouso alegre that lead to the creation, enlargement and management of conservation units and incentives for the adoption of productive practices based on sustainability in these areas of ecological interest.

In Brazil, the National Curricular Guidelines (DCN) have determined that the medical professsional must act in the primary and secondary levels of attention and solve the prevalent health issues with quality. UNIPLAC’s medical course was created in 2004, enrolling 40 students per year, with an innovative methodological proposal of active teaching: the Problem-Based Learning (ABP). Furthermore, UNIPLAC’s medical course offers support scenarios of extreme importance to the students, such as Laboratory of Professional Practice (LPP) and Morphofunctional Laboratory (LMF). LPP promotes the learning of semiology skills, medical procedures, clinical laboratory and communication. The objective is to identify the student’s attendance in LMF. A quantitative and descriptive research was conducted through reading the LMF’s logbook between January 2004 and December 2012. The focus of the research was tutors and teachers who were in the coordination of the medical course. LMF is a privileged space for the development of the pedagogical approach based on problematization and integration of a several learning areas.

Background: The root canal length (RCL) estimates is an essential step for total endodontic therapy procedures. The aim of this study was to measure the RCL in a sample of extracted primary anterior teeth and compare the data obtained with the literature for educational and clinical purposes. Materials and methods: Seventy extracted primary anterior upper and lower teeth were selected according to the following inclusion criteria: absence of root resorption and/or internal root canal anatomy complications, and no previous root canal manipulation. The teeth were assigned to six groups: upper central incisors (UCI; n = 15), upper lateral incisors (ULI; n = 13), upper canines (UC; n = 20), lower central incisors (LCI; n = 6), lower lateral incisors (LLI; n = 3), and lower canines (LC; n = 13). RCL was measured by the direct method after insertion of a #15 K-file with a silicone stopper in the root canal until the root apex and measuring with a millimetre rule. Results: Mean RCL values (mm)?obtained were UCI = 14.33 ± 1.69; ULI =
A multiparameter chaos control method applied to maps

Brazilian Journal of Physics , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-97332008000500002
Abstract: chaos is a kind of nonlinear system response that has a dense set of unstable periodic orbits (upos) embedded in a chaotic attractor. the idea of the chaos control is to explore the upo stabilization obtaining dynamical systems that may quickly react to some new situation, changing conditions and their response. the ogy (ott-grebogi-yorke) method achieves system stabilization by using small perturbations promoted in the neighborhood of the desired orbit when the trajectory crosses a specific surface, such as a poincaré section. this contribution proposes a multiparameter (mp) method based on ogy approach in order to control chaotic behavior using different control parameters. as an application of the proposed multiparameter general formulation it is presented an uncoupled approach where the control parameters do not influence the system dynamics when they are not active. this method is applied to control chaos in maps using two control parameters. the two-dimensional hénon and ikeda maps are of concern. results show that the proposed procedure can be a good alternative for chaos control since it provides a more effective upo stabilization than the classical single-parameter ogy approach.

Abstract: The wood-decay fungi are able to bioconvert a wide variety of lignocellulosic residues due to the secretion of extracellular enzymes. The use of agricultural wastes as substrate for mushroom cultivation or enzymes production can help to solve environmental problems caused by inadequate discharge in the nature. The production of hydrolytic and oxidative enzymes by Pleurotus pulmonarius developed in solid state system using orange waste as substrate was evaluated in this work. Among the hydrolytic enzymes, pectinase was the main enzyme produced by the fungus, presenting the highest enzymatic activity of 9.4 U/mL after 35 days of cultivation. Considering the oxidative enzymes, laccase was the main enzyme produced with maximal activity of 12.2 U/mL obtained after 20 days of cultivation. Low enzyme levels of manganese peroxidase, β-glucosidase and β-xy-losidase were detected with activity peaks at the end of the cultivation. The enzymatic levels of amylase, carboxymethyl cellulase and xylanase were similar and less than 1.5 U/mL. No aryl-alcohol oxidase activity was detected. NDF, ADF and cellulose values increased during 45 days of cultivation. There was no lignin degradation during the study period and the fungus culture in orange solid waste caused protein enrichment in the substrate. Our results demonstrate that P. pulmonarius was an efficient producer of two important industrial enzymes, pectinase and laccase in a cheap solid state system using orange waste as substrate.
