Open Journal of Gastroenterology (OJGas) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ojgas.2016.64014
Abstract: Aim: There were no data about esophageal cancer in Burundi. The aim of the study was to highlight the epidemiological, clinical and histopathological aspects of the esophageal cancer. Method: A retrospective study over a 24-years period (from January 1988 to December 2011) was carried out at Kamenge university hospital, including patients with esophageal cancer. The cases were selected on basis of the histological evidence of the cancer. Results: A total of 34 cases were retrieved and included for analysis. Among them, 24 patients (70.5%) were males. The esophageal cancer constituted 8.6% of digestive cancers over the period of the study. The average age was 50.9 years. It was revealed by dysphagia in 32 patients (94.1%) and was concomitantly metastatic in 12 patients. The squamous cell carcinoma was 30 cases (88.2%). 27 patients underwent a curative resection, but the outcome and prognosis were poor. In-hospital mortality and morbidity rates were respectively 8.8% and 17.7%. Conclusion: The present study showed evidence that the esophageal cancer in our country had the same characteristics and distribution as well as in developing countries. It had a poor prognosis and efforts had to be done in the early cancer detection.
ADRB2, ADRB3, BDKRB2 and MTNR1B Genes Related to Body fat Modulation and Its Interaction with Physical Activity and Blood Pressure  [PDF]
Aline Marcadenti
Open Journal of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases (OJEMD) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ojemd.2015.57012
Abstract: Hypertension (HTN) is the risk factor that most contributes to mortality rates in the world, followed by physical inactivity and obesity. Despite the influence of genetic factors on the genesis of HTN, blood pressure levels are strongly influenced by environmental factors such as physical inactivity and overweight, characterizing it as a polygenic disease. Genetic components and environmental factors such as physical exercise may modulate the phenotype of individuals predisposed to medical conditions such as HTN, independently of modifiable factors such as increased levels of adiposity; however, studies have shown that polymorphic forms detected in genes involved in the mechanisms of blood pressure regulation and also related to body fat modulation may interact with physical activity levels and HTN. The aim of this article is to review the interactions between polymorphisms in ADRB2, ADRB3, BDKRB2 and MTNR1B genes, physical activity and blood pressure.

Abstract: Wastewater stabilization ponds generate low cost by-products that are useful for agriculture. The utilization of these by-products for soil amendment and as a source of nutrients for plants requires a high level of sanitation and stabilization of the organic matter,to maintain acceptable levels of soil, water and air quality. In this study, two aquaculture wastewater treatment systems;recirculating system and a floating plant bed system were designed to improve the quality of irrigation Water in local communities with low income. In both systems the grass species Lolium perenne Lam was used as a plant biofilter while vegetable specie Amaranthus viridis was used to evaluate the performance of the system and the suitability of the phyto-treated water for irrigation. It was found that the harmful material removal rate for recirculating system was 88.9% for TAN (total ammonia nitrogen),90% for NO2--N,64.8% for NO3--N while for floating plant bed system 82.7% for TAN,82% for NO2--N and 60.5% for NO3--N.Comparative analysis of the efficiency of waste element removal between the two systems revealed that both systems performed well, however, plant growth was not robust for floating plant bed system while recirculating system is energy consuming.Although both systems did not attain sufficient levels of TN (total nitrogen) and TP (total phosphorus) load reduction, the treatment with L.perenne remarkably improved the irrigation water quality.A.viridis plants irrigated with the phyto-treated discharge water had lesser concentrations of heavy metals in their tissues compared to those irrigated with untreated discharge. The control plants irrigated with untreated discharge were also found to be highly lignified with few stems and small leaves.
Sapiezinskas, Aline;
Horizontes Antropológicos , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-71832012000200006
Abstract: this article aims to discuss how it is formed the so called "design artcraft", which comes to life with the convergence of technical practices of designers and the "traditional knowledge" of artisans. this knowledge is said to be passed from generation to generation. taking into account my fieldwork experience with artisans in brasília, i try and unveil how emerges the notion that artcraft production should follow formal and aesthetical requirements in order to please the consumers and thus succeed in the market. some "myths" regarding the artcraft work are put at stake on the paper, which shows how symbolic disputes among artisans, designers and institutions emerge in the field. i chose to approach artcrafts in brasília as a field, in accordance to the concept of pierre bourdieu. by so doing, i was able to identify the most relevant social actors and the roles they play in this specific case. this concept also allows me to reveal the power struggles that institute practices and form this field. i try to link bourdieu's approach to the symbolic interactionism of georg simmel and erving goffman. although these authors have their particularities, both share the common notion of a social constructed reality through the experience of the actors within a specific context. in addition to these references, i also incorporated in my analysis a perspective of geertz, who emphasizes the importance of the context and interpretation for the symbolic anthropology.
Writing Citizenship: Flexible Forms of Belonging in Kao Kalia Yang’s The Late Homecomer
Aline Lo
Hmong Studies Journal , 2011,
Abstract: This article draws on the idea of a more flexible category of citizenship from Michel Laguerre and Bonnie Honig, arguing that Kao Kalia Yang’s The Latehomecomer presents readers with a displacement narrative that negates national belonging and the traditional myth of immigrant America, and, instead, upholds an idea of self-identification that is based not on the nation-state, but on family continuity and finding refuge in writing.
Aline Magnien
In Situ : Revue de Patrimoines , 2005, DOI: 10.4000/insitu.9352
The American memorial church of Chateau-Thierry, dedicated in 1924 has been built by two architects, Paul-Philippe Cret and Achille-Henri Chauquet. The church is adorned by a stained glass church window showing La Fayette welcoming Pershing and by some others stained glasses representing parables by David Burnand from sketches of his father Eugène Burnand. American churches supplied the pulpit and other furniture to adorn the building in memory of the soldiers died in the battle front. By its architecture, its furniture and the circumstances of its edification, the memorial church of Chateau-Thierry deserves a study
Aline Vennemann
Trajectoires , 2011,
Abstract: Civilité et barbarie vont de pair.
Helg, Aline
Revista de Indias , 1998,
Abstract: Blacks joined en masse the struggle for Cuba's independence from its beginning. In the process, many increased their expectations regarding their position in an igualitarian future. This article explores some dimensions of Afro-Cubans' war experiences and discusses the concerns their massive participation raised among certain white separatist leaders who did not hesitate to jeopardize Cuba Libre's most decisive victory against Spain and to lobby for U.S. intervention in order to limit the revolutionary potential of the war.
