Abstract: this study aimed to understand how information on oral health is carried in the printed media in the state of espírito santo, brazil. this was a qualitative study using content analysis on 66 articles relating to the subject that were carried in the newspapers a gazeta and a tribuna between march 2004 and june 2009. the empirical material originated seven analytical categories: accountability of the individual, extreme realities, popular image of dentists and their offices, pathologization of halitosis, aesthetic valuation, determinants of oral health and prevention and habits. the media's approach towards oral health cuts across a complex of social, cultural, political, biological and economic factors. this highlights the importance of communication in context with the interests of society. thus, the communication may be interactive, with dialogue, and its critical power in education and health promotion may be explored, thereby consciously relaying consumerism in oral health.

Abstract: this study seeks to outline the main characteristics of the texts on oral health that appeared in the printed media in the state of espírito santo from 2004 to 2009, in order to analyze and compare the issues, approaches and journalistic relevance related to the theme prioritized in a tribuna and a gazeta newspapers. exploratory documentary research was conducted, based on quantitative content analysis of the material, which established that the issues included ranged from information about oral health policies, community service and prevention of oral health diseases, to the "aesthetic tendencies" of the smile. it also covered the dissemination of new technologies and dental specialties and there was a predominance of even-numbered pages, fewer first page texts and full-page coverage. this implies a moderate appreciation of these issues, different editorial projects, plus the difference in target audience that determined the journalistic standard and the predominance of specialized sources. despite the oral health articles not revealing journalistic "scoops", they can be reworked using conscious journalistic techniques, in order to elicit the extraordinary from the ordinary, giving rise to texts of social relevance in both newspapers.
Cómo el predicador ha de reprender en el púlpito los pecados públicos de los Reyes
Luciana Gentilli
Impossibilia : Revista Internacional de Estudios Literarios , 2012,
Abstract: The ardent intellectual debate, which is developed in Spain throughout the Seventeenthcentury, on the lawfulness of reproaching the king from the pulpit presupposes the ability to distinguishwhat is useful from what is ethically reprehensible. Therefore, it is essential the adoption by the preachersof a reasonable strategy based on both the intentional concealment of the most dangerous truths and theimplementation of a sophisticated communication mechanism in function of the rules of royal decorumand stratified morality. Speaking in an indirect way, silent accusation, demure reticence are the mosteffective techniques to fit the status of the listener, without thereby giving up the educational work.

Abstract: the aim of this study was to analyze the professor-student relationship at the federal university of espírito santo's school of dentistry and to discuss the possible impact this relationship has in the teaching-learning process. this is a quantitative exploratory study under which questionnaires containing both closed and open questions were applied to 130 students and 40 professors. the results show that 49% of the students and 45% of the professors believe the professor-student relationship is good. when asked whether they had been reprimanded by the professors in front of a patient, 35% of students responded they had never been, while 65% said they had at least once. the trust in education was worked on by asking the professor if he or she would bring a relative to be treated at the school's clinics. in total, 47% responded positively, showing confidence in the students, in the professors' guidance, and in the quality of care as a guide for their decisions. the professor-student relationship is considered good for both, but a few factors were singled out as negative interferences in the quality of the teaching-learning process, such as the lack of accessibility and educational and social interaction among the players, the professors' arrogance and bullying, and the students' lack of understanding of their limits.
First report of freshwater leech Helobdella stagnalis (Rhyncobdellida: Glossiphoniidae) as a parasite of an anuran amphibian
Rocco Tiberti,Augusto Gentilli
Acta Herpetologica , 2010,
Abstract: The authors describe the first case of parasitism on anuran amphibian, Rana temporaria, by the freshwater leech Helobdella stagnalis, in a mountainous area of northwestern Italy. The presence of skin abrasions and haemorrhages attributable to leech attack discards the hypothesis of a simple phoretic relationship between leech and frog.
Diet of the asp viper Vipera aspis in woodland habitats of the Po plain (NW Italy)
Luca Canova,Augusto Gentilli
Acta Herpetologica , 2008,
Abstract: The diet of Asp viper Vipera aspis was studied in forested habitat of Northern Italy The species feeds on a low number of preys, possibly reflecting the reduction of small mammal richness in woodland habitats.
Effect of suprathermal electrons on the intensity and Doppler frequency of electron plasma lines
P. Guio,J. Lilensten
Annales Geophysicae (ANGEO) , 2003,
Abstract: In an incoherent scattering radar experiment, the spectral measurement of the so-called up- and downshifted electron plasma lines provides information about their intensity and their Doppler frequency. These two spectral lines correspond, in the backscatter geometry, to two Langmuir waves travelling towards and away from the radar. In the daytime ionosphere, the presence of a small percentage of photoelectrons produced by the solar EUV of the total electron population can excite or damp these Langmuir waves above the thermal equilibrium, resulting in an enhancement of the intensity of the lines above the thermal level. The presence of photo-electrons also modifies the dielectric response function of the plasma from the Maxwellian and thus influences the Doppler frequency of the plasma lines. In this paper, we present a high time-resolution plasma-line data set collected on the Eiscat VHF radar. The analysed data are compared with a model that includes the effect of a suprathermal electron population calculated by a transport code. By comparing the intensity of the analysed plasma lines data to our model, we show that two sharp peaks in the electron suprathermal distribution in the energy range 20-30 eV causes an increased Landau damping around 24.25 eV and 26.25 eV. We have identified these two sharp peaks as the effect of the photoionisation of N2 and O by the intense flux of monochromatic HeII radiation of wavelength 30.378 nm (40.812 eV) created in the chromospheric network and coronal holes. Furthermore, we see that what would have been interpreted as a mean Doppler drift velocity for a Maxwellian plasma is actually a shift of the Doppler frequency of the plasma lines due to suprathermal electrons. The VOISE Algorithm: a Versatile Tool for Automatic Segmentation of Astronomical Images
P. Guio,N. Achilleos
Physics , 2009, DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2009.15218.x
Abstract: The auroras on Jupiter and Saturn can be studied with a high sensitivity and resolution by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ultraviolet (UV) and far-ultraviolet (FUV) Space Telescope spectrograph (STIS) and Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) instruments. We present results of automatic detection and segmentation of Jupiter's auroral emissions as observed by HST ACS instrument with VOronoi Image SEgmentation (VOISE). VOISE is a dynamic algorithm for partitioning the underlying pixel grid of an image into regions according to a prescribed homogeneity criterion. The algorithm consists of an iterative procedure that dynamically constructs a tessellation of the image plane based on a Voronoi Diagram, until the intensity of the underlying image within each region is classified as homogeneous. The computed tessellations allow the extraction of quantitative information about the auroral features such as mean intensity, latitudinal and longitudinal extents and length scales. These outputs thus represent a more automated and objective method of characterising auroral emissions than manual inspection.
A New Method for Determining Geometry of Planetary Images
P. Guio,N. Achilleos
Physics , 2010,
Abstract: This paper presents a novel semi-automatic image processing technique to estimate accurately, and objectively, the disc parameters of a planetary body on an astronomical image. The method relies on the detection of the limb and/or the terminator of the planetary body with the VOronoi Image SEgmentation (VOISE) algorithm (Guio and Achilleos, 2009). The resulting map of the segmentation is then used to identify the visible boundary of the planetary disc. The segments comprising this boundary are then used to perform a "best" fit to an algebraic expression for the limb and/or terminator of the body. We find that we are able to locate the centre of the planetary disc with an accuracy of a few tens of one pixel. The method thus represents a useful processing stage for auroral "imaging" based studies.
