Abstract: sugarcane juice is a very well-known and popular beverage in brazil, and provided it is properly exploited, it has a high market potential. the aim of this research was to evaluate the physicochemical, microbiological and sensory stability of pure sugarcane juice and mixed with fresh lemon and pineapple juice, subjected to a heat treatment (70 °c/25 min) and/or gamma radiation (2.5 kgy) and stored in high density polyethylene bottles. the data were evaluated by variance analysis and their mean values compared by tukey's test. processing of the sugarcane juice reduced the microorganism load without significantly altering the physicochemical composition, aroma and flavor of the beverages in comparison with the control. luminosity was higher in the product subjected to the heat treatment combined with gamma radiation than that resulting from the other treatments. the polyphenol oxidase activity in the processed beverages was significantly lower than in the control. the addition of fruit juice to the sugarcane juice did not modify the latter's physicochemical composition. however, the addition of 10% pineapple juice to the sugarcane juice increased the manganese and reduced sugars content when compared with pure sugarcane juice and with sugarcane juice mixed with 4% lemon juice.

We report a case of a 73-year-old female, laundress/farmer, hypertensive, with symptomatic pulsatile lump of 1.5 x 0.5 cm at the right anatomical snuffbox of the right hand, with slow and progressive growth and local pain in the past 10 years. The patient presented no neurological symptoms, cyanosis, infection or local trauma history. Allen"s test was negative, and color Doppler ultrasound confirmed presence of radial artery aneurysm in the anatomical snuffbox. Surgical treatment via aneurysmectomy of radial artery in the snuffbox with proximal and distal ligation was carried out. She had good operative course with no signs of digital ischemia. Histopathological test confirmed diagnosis of arterial wall (true aneurysm). She remains asymptomatic in outpatient follow-up. There is no definition as to which aneurysms distal to the axillary artery could be followed without a surgical procedure. As the patients had normal Allen"s test and local pain, proximal and distal ligation was chosen and had good outcome.

Venancio, Aline Cristine Pinto;Aguiar, Gesilene Ribeiro de;Lopes, Patrícia da Silva;Alves, Dimitri Ramos;
Revista Brasileira de Parasitologia Veterinária , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-29612010000300006
Abstract: forty-one specimens of mandi-amarelo pimelodus maculatus lacépède, 1803 (siluriformes: pimelodidae) and 54 specimens of jundiá rhamdia quelen (quoy & gaimard, 1824) (siluriformes: heptapteridae) were collected from the paraíba do sul river, volta redonda, state of rio de janeiro, brazil between november 2007 and october 2008. these fish underwent necropsy so their infracommunities of metazoan parasites could be studied. the same three species of parasites were collected in the two fish species studied. these were one monogenean, one nematode, and one hirudinean. cucullanus pinnai (travassos, artiga, and pereira, 1928) (nematoda: cucullanidae) and aphanoblastella sp. (monogenea: dactylogyridae) were the dominant species with the highest prevalence in p. maculatus and r. quelen. the parasite species of p. maculatus and r. quelen showed an atypical over-dispersed pattern of distribution. no parasite species showed significant correlation between the body total length of the siluriform hosts and their prevalence and abundance. the parasite species richness showed a mean value of 0.87 ± 0.67 (0 -2) and 0.57 ± 0.56 (0 -2) in p. maculatus and r. quelen, respectively, and no correlation with the body total length.

Revista Brasileira de Hematologia e Hemoterapia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-84842010000500018
Abstract: chanarin-dorfman syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disease that may be associated with ichthyosis and is characterized by the presence of intracellular lipid droplets in the cells of many different tissues, in particular in keratinocytes and granulocytes. mutations in the gene that encodes the abhd5 protein of the esterase/lipase/thioesterase subfamily have been identified as the main cause of the disorder. the extracutaneous manifestations are heterogeneous, both in intensity and characteristics. systemic involvement may include hepatosplenomegaly, double-sided cataracts, growth retardation, myopathy, ataxia and bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. (1) since the first reports of the syndrome (1) only 30 patients have been described in the literature, mostly from middle eastern countries.(2) the diagnosis is confirmed by the presence of lipid droplets in granulocytes of peripheral blood.(3)

Abstract: objectives: to describe the results of a nutrition intervention program aiming to promote healthy eating habits among schoolchildren. methods: an uncontrolled intervention study was conducted covering 162 schoolchildren from the 3rd and 4th grades of two educational institutions (public and private) in the city of florianópolis, santa catarina, brazil. a short-term nutritional education program was run over the course of seven weekly meetings. an eating habits questionnaire was applied. weight and height data were taken before and one month after the intervention conclusion. results: although no changes were detected in the schoolchildren nutritional profile, there was a significant reduction in the cookies consumption brought from home among private school boys and in the public school, there was a significant increase in the school meals and fruit consumption. conclusions: after the intervention, it was observed that it had increased the frequency of some attitudes and more healthful eating habits. the period between the program conclusion and the second anthropometric examination can not have been enough to provoke changes in the body mass index. this experience can be applied in other institutions and, for its better effectiveness, it must count with the school community participation (mainly parents and professors).
