Journal of Applied Oral Science , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-77572009000700006
Abstract: this research consisted of a quantitative assessment, and aimed to measure the possible discrepancies between the maxillomandibular positions for centric relation (cr) and maximum intercuspation (mi), using computed tomography volumetric cone beam (cone beam method). the sample of the study consisted of 10 asymptomatic young adult patients divided into two types of standard occlusion: normal occlusion and angle class i occlusion. in order to obtain the centric relation, a jig device and mandible manipulation were used to deprogram the habitual conditions of the jaw. the evaluations were conducted in both frontal and lateral tomographic images, showing the condyle/articular fossa relation. the images were processed in the software included in the newtom 3g device (qr nnt software version 2.00), and 8 tomographic images were obtained per patient, four laterally and four frontally exhibiting the tma's (in cr and mi, on both sides, right and left). by means of tools included in another software, linear and angular measurements were performed and statistically analyzed by student t test. according to the methodology and the analysis performed in asymptomatic patients, it was not possible to detect statistically significant differences between the positions of centric relation and maximum intercuspation. however, the resources of cone beam tomography are of extreme relevance to the completion of further studies that use heterogeneous groups of samples in order to compare the results.

Abstract: the magnitude of occasional discrepancies between the centric relation and maximal intercuspation positions remains a controversial subject. this study quantitatively evaluated the possible discrepancies in the condyle/mandibular fossa relationship between these positions using cone-beam computed tomography. twenty young and asymptomatic volunteers were distributed equally into normal occlusion and angle class i, ii and iii malocclusion groups. they were submitted to one tomographic scan in maximal intercuspation and one in centric relation. measurements were performed on lateral and frontal cuts of the patients' temporomandibular joints, and the data collected were compared using student's t test at a significance level of 5%. the results showed that there were no statistically significant differences between the centric relation and maximal intercuspation positions in young and asymptomatic patients with practically intact dentitions using cone-beam computed tomography.

Abstract: purpose: to describe the characteristics of pregnancies complicated by maternal syphilis and fetal death. methods: retrospective descriptive study performed by reviewing the medical records of 48 pregnant women with maternal syphilis and fetal death outcome admitted to hospital geral de nova igua?u, baixada fluminense, state of rio de janeiro, during the period from 2005 to 2008. birth weight >500 g and fetal death documented by death certificate were the inclusion criteria. the following aspects were analyzed: sociodemographic factors, reproductive history, aspects of the current pregnancy, prenatal care, venereal disease research laboratory (vdrl) testing, and other gestational conditions, in addition to syphilis. the fetal deaths were classified as maternal, placental or fetal. percentage, mean, standard deviation (sd), maximum and minimum values were reported. results: the mean maternal age was 22.7 years (sd=0.9 years), and at least 50% of the patients had low educational level. at hospital admission, 68.8% of the subjects were in the third trimester, with a mean gestational age of 29.2 weeks (sd=0.5), and more than 50% were in labor. the vast majority of fetal deaths (93%) occurred before maternal hospitalization. among the patients who received prenatal care (54.2%), 30.8% had no vdrl test, 30.8 and 15.4% had a reactive and non-reactive result, respectively, and none had more than one prenatal vdrl test. at the time of childbirth, most of the mothers (95.8%) carried out vdrl testing. overall, the vdrl titers varied from 1:1 to 1:512, with predominant values >1:4 (91.7%). in 23% of cases other clinical conditions related to fetal death, in addition to syphilis, were found. conclusions: the infection was the main clinically identified cause of fetal death in this patient series. fetal death occurred during the preterm period and in the presence of high titers of maternal infection, suggesting recent syphilis infection.

Revista de Saúde Pública , 1979, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101979000300006
Abstract: in order to quantify the extent of the number of unregistered births and to identify the factors responsible for this, 2,893 interviews were carried out in a probabilistic sampling of homes in the urban area of salvador, bahia, in 1977. thirty-two percent of the children under the age of 12 months identified in these interviews were still not registered. excluding infants under 15 days of age, this percentage was 29.9%, and among children over 60 days old (the maximum period permitted by law) it fell to 27.5%. the intervening variables found to be positively associated with birth registration were maternal income, parental education, status of the residential area, coverage by social security, and baptism of the child. the probability of registration decreased at higher birth orders. among the births registered, 41% were registered after the 15th day and 14% after the 60-day legal limit.
Natalidade em Salvador, Bahia (Brasil)
Almeida,Maura Maria Guimares de;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 1981, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89101981000100006
Abstract: in a random sampling of 2893 households in salvador, ba, brazil, the birth rate was focused on, the fertility rate was found to be 96.87 per 1000 women of child-bearing age, and the birth rate was 32.97. for this survey, residential area and mother's occupation were used as income indicators which pointed out two inverse relationships: 1) an inverse association between the number of children and income was statistically significant; 2) the same was true in the mother's educational level versus number of children.

Abstract:
Background: The root canal length (RCL) estimates is an essential step for total endodontic therapy procedures. The aim of this study was to measure the RCL in a sample of extracted primary anterior teeth and compare the data obtained with the literature for educational and clinical purposes. Materials and methods: Seventy extracted primary anterior upper and lower teeth were selected according to the following inclusion criteria: absence of root resorption and/or internal root canal anatomy complications, and no previous root canal manipulation. The teeth were assigned to six groups: upper central incisors (UCI; n = 15), upper lateral incisors (ULI; n = 13), upper canines (UC; n = 20), lower central incisors (LCI; n = 6), lower lateral incisors (LLI; n = 3), and lower canines (LC; n = 13). RCL was measured by the direct method after insertion of a #15 K-file with a silicone stopper in the root canal until the root apex and measuring with a millimetre rule. Results: Mean RCL values (mm)?obtained were UCI = 14.33 ± 1.69; ULI =

There is already a great number of practical experiences with agroecological transition in the coffee plant (Coffea arabica L.), in small properties at the South region of Minas Gerais state, which inspired this research. The experiment was installed in a coffee crop (variety Catuaí Amarelo, spacing 4.0 x 0.7 m and 6 years) agelocated in Lavras, (Minas Gerais state, Brazil). After the first year of agroecologic transition, the effects of organic and conventional management in the nutrition and productivity were evaluated. The experimental design used was the lattice balanced 4x4 in factorial scheme 3x2x2 with five replications and four additional treatments. The used organic management is efficient in the supply of N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Mn, B, Zn, Cu, and Fe for the coffee plant in production. The treatments of organic management showed a similar productivity to theconventional one due to the existence of nutrient reserves in the soil.

Abstract: this study aimed at understanding the social role played by brazilian physical therapists by drawing on their practices. empirical data included the recordings of 89 interviews with physical therapists, data from the sao paulo state first census of physical therapists, and information on physical therapy undergraduate courses. the analysis showed that mainstream physical therapy is strongly linked to the healing model, of liberal ideology; training courses are mostly private and concentrated in the country's southeast, richest region. results sustain evidence of a fragmented professional practice, encouraged by the hegemonic model, but also of signs of conflict between two opposing concepts of health care. the hegemonic model takes the part for the whole, fragments body and knowledge, bears on liberalism, where health is taken as a commodity; health care services focus on illness and value specialization. the counter-hegemonic principles, while not denying the relevance of technical knowledge, value social and human dimensions of professional practice, focus on the person, aim at integration of services and support interdisciplinarity. the counter-hegemonic model tends to widen physical therapy practice beyond the clinic toward a humanized social role, in accordance with the national health system guidelines. it also allows for rethinking therapists current social place, offering parameters for reorientating the profession course of action.
