Abstract: DIMENSIONS AND SPACES OF SOCIAL INNOVATION. Following a period in which the idea of innovation was almost exclusively associated with the technological domain, the notion of social innovation has over the past few years gained increasing recognition and come to be used in a variety of contexts. In most of the of the market, usually without direct intervention by the State, and primarily aimed at social inclusion through the activity of the third sector. However, the conceptual discussion within the scope of Project LINKS has led us to further delimit the scope of the concept of social innovation, in order to define the conceptual framework of the research. Thus, we suggest that social innovation be regarded as consisting of any new response enjoying social recognition that both seeks and achieves social change while fulfilling three criteria: i) the satisfaction of human needs not met through market mechanisms; ii) the advancement of social inclusion; and iii) the empowerment of agents or actors that are actually or potentially subject to processes of social exclusion/marginalisation, thereby triggering changes of varying intensity in power relations. Having identified the central object of our research, it becomes indispensable to render operative the concept of social innovation, in order to produce a “roadmap” that makes it possible both to carry out a systematic comparative reading of the case studies and to define a set of indicators to be used in extensive analysis. In this paper, we begin by presenting the analytical dimensions that we consider to be most relevant: i) What is social innovation?; ii) Why is there social innovation?; iii) How does social innovation come about?; iv) Who produces social innovation?; and v) Where is social innovation produced? The discussion around these five analytical dimensions enables us to put forth a schematic roadmap that makes it possible to move forward in the analysis and interpretation of the actual social-geographical reality of social innovation. This roadmap emphasises certain aspects of social innovation, such as its nature, stimuli, resources and dynamics, as well as the characteristics of both its agents and its milieu, which, it is argued, tends to be characterised by a set of specificities that we can subsume under the concept of “plasticity”. In the second part of the article, we focus on the experience of microcredit in Portugal under the light of the conceptual framework presented in the first part. After a brief presentation of the concept and history of microcredit, we briefly describe its intr

Bridges across the Mediterranean sea: an introduction to the Maghreb-Southern Europe migration system
Alexandre Abreu,Jo?o Diogo Mateus
Finisterra - Revista Portuguesa de Geografia , 2004,
Abstract: The current geopolitical importance of the Mediterranean isheightened by the fact that it is both a dividing physical barrier between a developed Europe and a chronically peripheral Africa and one of the main structuring corridors for international migration. This note builds on the assumption that the Maghreb-Southern Europe migratory flows are best analysed in a “migration systems” approach and makes a contribution to the awareness of the history andpresent characteristics of the flows within this particular system. The note is divided into five sections: Section 1 further specifies the object of the note; Section 2 provides a brief historical account of the main periods and events of relevance to the dynamics of this migration system; Section 3 is a quantitative analysis of thestocks and flows of North African immigration to European countries in the recent past; Section 4 looks into these flows in further detail, seeking to identify some of their recent characteristics; finally, Section 5 identifies some foreseeable (economic, institutional, demographic,…) developments that are likely to affect the future dynamics of the system.

Abstract: The use of non-timber is a valuable alternative for the conservation of tropical forests. Juçara (Euterpe edulis Mart.) is considered one of the main alternatives in the Atlantic Forest for the production of açaí pulp. However, there are few studies that aim to evaluate their production. The present study aimed to construct a probabilistic model to predict the production of Euterpe edulis bunches, using dendrometric variables and competition index. Twenty plots of 10 × 50 m were sampled in an area with said specie, showing the arboreal entities with diameter at breast height > 4.8 cm, and recording the Euterpe edulis phenomena. The main variables influencing the production of bunches were assessed using logistic regression model. The logistic regression showed the variables diameter breast height (DBH) and total height (h) as significant to explain the variation between productive and non-productive entities. The competition index tested was not significant (p-value = 0.221). The model of prediction of curl production in Juçara can be written as: Zi = -6.878594 + 0.2522454

Abstract: the article analyses the content of 136 environmental policies - eps of companies operating in brazil and which have been certified in accordance to the requisites of nbr iso 14001:1996. these companies were identified in the "certified companies listing" in the magazine revista meio ambiente industrial - edi??o especial, may/june 1999 and july/august 2001 issues. the eps actual texts were obtained through direct requests made to the companies, via e-mail and/or postmail, and, also, captured from the companies' websites when at the disposal of interested parties. the content of the eps was analysed from the point of view of whether or not there was an explicit indication in the ep text that an economical and financial criterium has been employed in the management decision process, in face of the other expressions expliciting the companies' stand in relation to meeting legal requisites and to offering benefits to society. it has been verified that the tools provided to the interested parties are inadequate and, mainly, that company outside communication is inefficient and ineffective. it has been found that 73% of the eps do not reveal an environmental management concern regarding economical and financial aspects. furthermore, it has been found that 58% of the eps are included in the category of those that voluntarily commit to an environmental performance which is beyond the compulsory minimum required, however they do not submit their actions to any cost and benefit analysis of an economical and financial nature. finally, the results found permit one to infer that there is a difference between the environmental performance expressed in the writings (the "theory") and the management practices experienced and described at work.

Abstract: brazilian soil surveys are mostly outdated, with few details, usually based on discovery and recognition. this fact can be ascribed to the traditional, slow and expensive soil survey method, requiring a great number of field observations. thus, faster and cheaper soil mapping techniques must be developed. the objective of this study was to characterize soil mapping units in the region of ibaté and s?o carlos, state of s?o paulo, measuring slopes and altitudes, based on a digital elevation model (dem). first a semi-detailed soil map was drawn based on the traditional methodology. then, the dem was elaborated using contour lines of the region, from which maps with different slope and elevation classes were extracted. by cross tabulation each soil was determined in each slope and elevation class. each soil responded differently in relation to the slope classes. however, an overlapping of two or more soils can occur in the limit ranges. in the study area, the typic haplustox can be found predominantly in higher and plain areas. low weathered soils such as the typic udorthent are however found at different slope levels. it was concluded that knowledge on the soil distribution in the relief is very important for soil surveys. the dem have similarities with the soil map and can contribute with some information. soil variations are however extremely complex, which makes field observations indispensable.

Abstract: Piatã grass (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Piatã) is a tropical grass cultivating in pasture production system. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of nitrogen levels (0, 125, 250, 375 and 500 kg·N·ha-1) on structural characteristics and forage production of Piatã grass. The experiment comprised of twenty grass parcels arranged in randomised completely casualties design. This study was carried out between November of 2007 and April of 2008, with 175 experimental days. A quadratic effect (P < 0.05) was verified for nitrogen dosage on canopy height, final leaf blade length and leaf area index. Nitrogen fertilisation altered the population density of tillers, with estimated maximum value of 955 tillers·m-2 at a nitrogen dose of 357 kg·ha-1. A quadratic effect (P < 0.05) was also verified for nitrogen levels on the production of total and green leaf blade dry matter, with estimated maximum values of 19,253 and 11,548 kg·ha-1·year-1?for nitrogen levels of 411 and 384 kg·ha-1, respectively. However, a considerable portion of forage production obtained by nitrogen addition occurred from stem production. The productions of green leaf blade dry matter, tiller density, leaf blade length and leaf blade index are all variables related to structural aspects and pasture quality, with all attaining their highest values at a mean nitrogen application level of 380 kg·ha-1.
