Abstract: the aim of this work is to recover the debate on social movements and explore possibilities of organizational analysis from the theory of frames and political opportunities. for this, we discuss how the debates on social movements have produced several possibilities for analysis, which attempt to address a fundamental dichotomy in the field, the choice between "strategy" or "identity" as a focus of collective action. among the alternatives formulated to overcome the dichotomy, there are theories and frames of political opportunities that together seek to rescue the cultural and political dimensions of social movements. to discuss the contribution of these theories in the fields of public administration, public policy and social management, we examine examples of empirical analysis that made use of this literature recently in brazil. although developed in other socio-political context, we believe that this approach has great theoretical and analytical potential can be tested in other reviews that seek to understand these dimensions of collective action in social movements in the brazilian context.

Social Movements and Organizational Analysis: exploring possibilities from the theory of frames and political opportunitiesAbstractThe aim of this work is to recover the debate on social movements and explore possibilities of organizational analysis from the theory of frames and political opportunities. Abstract: The biofilm consists of a diverse community of microorganisms attached on biotic and abiotic surfaces, formed by Candida albicans. In the oral cavity, the presence of biofilm is the first step towards the development of dental caries and periodontal disease, which makes it necessary to assess the effectiveness of new alternatives, such as the use of plant extracts, to promote prevention. We evaluated the inhibitory activities of the extract of the jabuticabeira leaf (Myrciaria cauliflora) and leaf extract of guava (Psidium guajava L) in biofilm formation by Candida albicans, as this yeast is generally associated with diseases of the mouth. Microplates were used for yeast cultivation and to assess the degree of biofilm formation inhibition through the tack checked by turbidity in the ELISA reader. None of the extracts inhibited biofilm formation at the concentrations used.

Abstract: in order to obtain a better understanding of what is citrus, 33 cdna libraries were constructed from different citrus species and genera. total rna was extracted from fruits, leaves, flowers, bark, seeds and roots, and subjected or not to different biotic and abiotic stresses (pathogens and drought) and at several developmental stages. to identify putative promoter sequences, as well as molecular markers that could be useful for breeding programs, one shotgun library was prepared from sweet orange (citrus sinensis var. olimpia). in addition, est libraries were also constructed for a citrus pathogen, the oomycete phythophthora parasitica in either virulent or avirulent form. a total of 286,559 cdna clones from citrus were sequenced from their 5? end, generating 242,790 valid reads of citrus. a total of 9,504 sequences were produced in the shotgun library and the valid reads were assembled using cap3. in this procedure, we obtained 1,131 contigs and 4,083 singletons. a total of 19,200 cdna clones from p. parasitica were sequenced, resulting in 16,400 valid reads. the number of ests generated in this project is, to our knowledge, the largest citrus sequence database in the world.

Abstract: Background. End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients under hemodialysis (HD) have high mortality rate. Inflammation, dyslipidemia, disturbances in erythropoiesis, iron metabolism, endothelial function, and nutritional status have been reported in these patients. Our aim was to identify any significant association of death with these disturbances, by performing a two-year follow-up study. Methods and Results. A large set of data was obtained from 189 HD patients (55.0% male; 66.4 ± 13.9 years old), including hematological data, lipid profile, iron metabolism, nutritional, inflammatory, and endothelial (dys)function markers, and dialysis adequacy. Results. 35 patients (18.5%) died along the follow-up period. Our data showed that the type of vascular access, C-reactive protein (CRP), and triglycerides (TG) are significant predictors of death. The risk of death was higher in patients using central venous catheter (CVC) (Hazard ratio [HR] =3.03, 95% CI = 1.49–6.13), with higher CRP levels (fourth quartile), compared with those with lower levels (first quartile) (HR = 17.3, 95% CI = 2.40–124.9). Patients with higher TG levels (fourth quartile) presented a lower risk of death, compared with those with the lower TG levels (first quartile) (HR = 0.18, 95% CI = 0.05–0.58). Conclusions. The use of CVC, high CRP, and low TG values seem to be independent risk factors for mortality in HD patients. 1. Introduction Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) have a high mortality rate [1, 2] that far exceeds the mortality rate for the non-ESRD population [3]. In the past half-century, the widespread use of hemodialysis (HD) to prolong life of ESRD patients has been a remarkable achievement, preventing death from uremia in these patients. Nowadays this therapy has expanded widely and is being used by an increasing elderly patient population, leading to significant economic consequences to patients and to healthcare systems. Our present knowledge of the mechanisms leading to increased death in this context is incomplete. In the last years, this medical field has known significant technological and pharmacological improvements. Although some evidence may suggest that mortality rate among dialysis patients has decreased over the last few years, actually, patient’s survival is still low. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been considered the most common cause of death in these patients [4]. Cardiac arrest and congestive heart failure are more prominent causes of cardiovascular death than acute myocardial infarction in patients with uremia. A higher mortality rate within the

Abstract: vascular epiphytes are frequent in mesic habitats and mid-elevation regions. the present study investigated the diversity and species composition of epiphytic bromeliads in the natural reserve of serra do teimoso (rnst) located in a transitional area between ombrophilous and semideciduous forests. adapted from the "rapid and representative sampling of vascular and non-vascular epiphyte diversity of tropical rain forests" protocol, our survey method used eight phorophytes of cariniana legalis (martius) kuntze found between 284 and 573 m a.s.l.. we registered 19 morphospecies and 526 bromeliad groups. almost one third of the species were classified as widely distributed and 27.3% are endemic to southern bahia. shannon index was 2.2 nats.ind-1 and the estimated number of species in this area was 25 (sd = ± 3.5). most c. legalis harbored a similar abundance and species composition of epiphytes, which was dominated by hohenbergia and aechmea species. this study registered the occurrence of three species that are new to the state of bahia, and one genus was collected for the first time in the rnst. results are in accordance with the known pattern of lower epiphytic diversity in drier locations. since all new records are exclusive to the crowns of large trees, the sampling of these new records was only possible because climbing techniques were used. compared to other methodologies for floristic surveys, the one employed here demanded lower sample effort and yielded similar results. large trees play an important role for epiphytes due to the concentration of species and individuals on them. thus, the utilization of canopy methodologies in other field surveys would be desirable to sample appropriately epiphytes in large trees.
