Morphological and physiological variation between queens and workers of Protonectarina sylveirae (de Saussure) (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Epiponini)

Abstract: morphological and physiological variation between queens and workers of protonectarina sylveirae (de saussure) (hymenoptera, vespidae, epiponini). the neotropical swarm-founding wasps, epiponini, range from the absence of morphological differentiation between castes to highly distinct castes. we measured eight body parts of females of two colonies of protonectarina sylveirae (de saussure, 1854). anova and discriminant analysis evidenced significant differences between castes, as previously observed by other authors for other species of epiponini. however, some females previously categorized as queens, were actually workers, supported by our statistic analyses. these individuals showed intermediate morphological features between queens and workers, having distinct patterns of hairs and clypeal spots. the castes of p. sylveirae are distinct, however intermediate individuals may be found in colonies promoting social flexibility.

Abstract: This paper considers the relationship between economic growth and minimum wage. Minimum wage helps reduce poverty and maintain a minimum standard of living. However, it is also claimed that minimum wage has a negative effect on employment and GDP. This paper develops a simple two-period overlapping generation model with three economic policies, minimum wage, unemployment benefit, and public investment that improves labor productivity. The government imposes tax on firms to finance public capital and unemployment benefit under a balanced budget. We show that economic growth is promoted with an increase in minimum wage and the ratio of public investment to tax revenue.
Nasolabial bilateral cyst as cause of the nasal obstruction: Case report and literature review

Abstract: Introduction: The nasolabial cyst is a rare disease, usually unilateral, benign, of embryonic origin, located in soft parts from the nasolabial folds and nasal wings. The diagnosis is essentially clinic, take into consideration the cyst topography, that is usually asymptomatic. Objective: This article has as main goal the description of a unusual case of nasolabial bilateral cyst with nasal obstruction, its treatment, anatomic pathological and accompaniment, besides the literature review. Case Report: Female patient, brown, 24 years old, showing bulging in nasolabial region and nasal obstruction. Physical and complementary exams with nasolabial cyst. Indicate surgical treatment of excision of the lesion. Final Considerations: The nasolabial bilateral cyst, although is rare, is a possible cause for the nasal obstruction, with good response to surgical therapy.

Abstract: Structure analyses for hydrate models of ethyleneimine oligomer (5-mer as model of PEI) were investigated by quantum chemical calculations. Conformation energies and structures optimized for hydrate models of (ttt)5 and (tgt)5 conformers were examined. Hydrate ratio, h [h = H2O/N (mol)], was set from 0.5 to 2. In anhydrates, (tg+t)5 conformer was more stable (?1.8 kcal/m.u.) than (ttt)5. In hydrates, (ttt)5 conformers were more stable (?0.7 - ?4.3) than (tg+t)5. These results corresponded to experimental results that anhydrous linear PEI crystal changes from double helical to single planar chain in hydration process. Structures calculated for (ttt)5 agreed in those observed for hydrates of PEI. In all (tg+t)5 conformers, O???H bonds between waters were found with the decreases of N???H bonds between imino group and water. The O???H bonds in (tg+t)5 conformer resulted in its high chain torsion, and strongly related with instability and structure change (large swelling).

Abstract: Purpose: Little research has been reported to date on the usefulness of olprinone in pediatric cardiac surgery, and no standard pediatric infusion protocol is currently established. Our study sought to confirm that the regimen described herein rapidly achieves the requisite plasma olprinone concentrations. Methods: For the purposes of our study, we enrolled 13 patients: 7 biventricular repair candidates and 6 Fontan-type operation candidates. We administered a continuous infusion of olprinone to our study subjects at 0.3 μg/kg/min with no loading dose starting approximately 30 minutes (min) before weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). We performed blood sampling at 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 min after the start of infusion and at the same elapsed intervals after separation from CPB. We measured plasma olprinone concentrations using ultra-fast liquid chromatography. Results: We observed effective plasma olpri-none concentrations (>20 ng/ml) at 30 min after weaning from CPB, or at 60 min after the start of infusion. Conclusion: We conclude that continuous olprinone infusion at 0.3 μg/kg/min without a loading dose initiated immediately after the release of aortic cross-clamping or immediately after the completion of all surgical procedures quickly and reliably achieves effective plasma concentrations.

Numerical Simulation of Interaction between Supersonic Flow and Backward Inclined Jets Surrounded by Porous Cavity  [PDF]

Abstract: As one of supersonic mixing techniques, a supersonic mixing technique using a cavity and a porous wall has been proposed. The cavity and the porous wall generate the low speed region in the cavity, which enhances mixing the main flow with the jets. In this study, numerical simulations were conducted to clarify the effects of backward inclined jets on the mixing technique using a porous wall and a cavity. In the numerical simulations, three patterns of jet injections which combined normal jets with backward inclined jets were studied. As a result, the combination of a backward inclined jet and a normal jet generates the suction flow behind the backward inclined jet, which is useful for making the injected jets flow into the cavity. In addition, the introduction of backward inclined jets reduces the total pressure loss. On the other hand, the mass flow rate through the porous holes decreases with increase in the number of the backward inclined jets.

A Preliminary Environmental Assessment for the Preservation and Restoration of Fujian Hakka Tulou Complexes

Abstract: In 2007 and 2009, research trips were taken, mainly in the Fujian province of China, to investigate the construction materials, methods, structures and floor plans of Hakka Tulou. Researchers lived in several Tulou, interviewed residents and experienced traditional Hakka lifestyle. Typically, Tulou are located in remote regions at relatively high elevations in climatic conditions characterized by hot summers, cold winters, and with high incidents of typhoons and earthquakes. The extent of damage and level of preservation were examined with respect to the age of many of these structures, the relatively harsh environment, and changing demographics in the region. The majority of occupants are now elderly. They maintain a traditional and efficient lifestyle utilizing minimum electricity, water, and energy. This study discusses the findings from these two field trips and assesses environmental load and sustainability within the context of current environmental standards using the Japanese Comprehensive Assessment System for Building Environmental Efficiency (CASBEE) from data collected at Cheng Qi Lou. The goal was: firstly to undertake a preliminary environmental assessment to determine sustainable elements of Hakka Tulou construction methods; secondly, to identify potential sustainable solutions to preserve existing structure; and finally, to identify appropriate sustainable solutions to repair and retrofit damaged and underutilized structures to modern living standards, while retaining traditional building techniques and lifestyle.
