Abstract:
This article analyzes the major stakeholders in the Brazilian construction industry from the viewpoint of the companies in this sector, as well as how these organizations relate to their stakeholders with regard to the topic of sustainability in the construction. The study was based on the principle that the relationship with stakeholders is one of the foundations for the inception and continuity of activities toward sustainability. The findings of which show that the construction companies start the sustainability implementation process without the involvement of external stakeholders. This survey points out the difficulty faced by Brazilian construction companies in relating to their stakeholders. There is the perception that the customers and other actors do not value sustainability-oriented activities, but, at the same time, the relationship of the companies with these stakeholders is limited to disclosure of information. This characteristic of the industry reveals a need for sustainability projects that take into consideration, since their formulation, the stakeholders’ perceptions. The importance of this article lies in the recognition that, although the topic of sustainability is discussed at all levels, studies that examine how specific construction industries have been dealing with it are still rare.
Barriers and Challenges to the Sustainability Requirements Implementation in Public Procurement of Engineering Works and Services  [PDF]

Open Journal of Civil Engineering (OJCE) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/ojce.2017.71001
Abstract:
The environmental damage arising from the construction and engineering services was responsible for the appearance of several norms and resolutions regulating and directing the sector’s performance. In this article, we research how professionals with experience in public bids assess the difficulty degree of the implementation of those requirements and how they assess the environmental legislation regarding the protection and conservation of the environment, impact on costs, deadlines and the solution to environmental problems. The results show that industry professionals consider as “high” the level of difficulty to implement the addressed sustainability requirements, and that the Brazilian environmental legislation does not comply with its environmental protection role, increases the possibility of delays and costs of projects and services and hampers the emergence of solutions that could solve environmental problems.

Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de S?o Paulo , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-46652003000500004
Abstract: dermatophytosis are superficial mycoses caused by fungi that can invade stratum corneum and keratinized tissues. in order to study the frequency of dermatophytes species and the clinical manifestations caused by these fungi, in s?o paulo, sp, brazil, the authors analyzed cultures isolated at the mycology laboratory from a selected population (15,300 out-patients of the hospital das clínicas, department of dermatology, faculty of medicine of university of s?o paulo) from january 1992 to june 2002. the most prevalent dermatophyte was trichophyton rubrum (48.7%), followed by microsporum canis (20.9%), trichophyton tonsurans (13.8%), trichophyton mentagrophytes (9.7%), epidermophyton floccosum (4.1%), and microsporum gypseum (2.5%). these agents determined more than one clinical manifestation, i.e., tinea corporis (31.5%), tinea capitis (27.5%), tinea unguium (14.8%), tinea cruris (13.9%), tinea pedis (9.9%), and tinea manuum (1.9%). clinical variants of dermatophytosis and their relationship to the etiologic agents were studied and the results were compared to those obtained in previous studies in other regions of brazil and in other countries.

Abstract: Aim: To evaluate data related to mental work functioning of workers with cancer diagnosis in radiotherapy in a private service in the city of Campinas, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Method: It consists in a cross-sectional, observational and analytical study with comparison between cancer patients and healthy people, using the Brazilian version of the Work Role Functioning Questionnaire (WRFQ-Br). Descriptive and statistical analysis is performed by the Mann-Whitney test. Results: There was a significant difference between the groups in the evaluation of mental demand; however, the population diagnosed with malignant neoplasm submitted to radiotherapy had unexpected higher scores, reflecting lower mental exigency. Conclusions: The observed context may occur due to extensive support of family, government and interdisciplinary team of health care for individuals diagnosed with cancer. This data provide support for new research studies related to the importance of the work to promote mental health, considering aspects related to social interaction and productivity as the support system members. The importance of disseminating these results and limitation is based in the necessity of investments to improve research and actions to promote the permanence and early return to work for cancer survivors in Brazil and Latin America.

Abstract: Clostridium difficile is a nosocomial enteric pathogen, considered the main etiological agent of antibiotic-associated diarrhea in hospitals. C. difficile is resistant to several antimicrobial agents used in empiric treatment protocols, which confers selective advantages to this species as compared with other members of the intestinal microbiota. The aim of this study was to evaluate and identify possible alterations of the intestinal microbiota population resulting from the use of antimicrobials associated with infections by C. difficile (CDI). Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) was used to evaluate fecal samples from two groups: healthy subjects and patients with C. difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD). A decrease in bacterial diversity was highlighted by the low number of bands in samples from CDAD patients, compared with healthy subjects. This may indicate that antibiotic treatment would affect bacterial diversity, leading to a significant difference between the intestinal microbiota of these two groups, but further studies are still needed. Firmicutes and Verrucomicrobia phyla were detected mainly in healthy individuals, and these could be related to protection factors against the CDI. Klebsiella variicola/K. pneumoniae were found mostly in samples from CDI patients. This study shows the effects of antimicrobials and the CDI itself on human intestinal microbiota.

Abstract: objective: cervical spondylotic myelopathy (scm) is a dysfunction related to spinal cord degeneration typical of aging. in the imaging studies can achieve a measure of the torg index to estimate cervical stenosis. we aim therefore to measure the torg index in x-rays and magnetic resonance (mr), to investigate possible discrepancies between the methods of measurement. methods: the torg index was measured on radiographs and mr of the cervical spine, obtained by determining the relationship between the posterior surface of the vertebral body and the nearest point to the corresponding laminar line, divided by the sagittal diameter of vertebral body. results: a total 29 patients has participated, 10 women and 19 men, with mean age of 48.1 ± 11 years, weight 68.7 ± 5kg and height 1.68 ± 0.6m. there were significant differences between the torg index calculated by radiography and mr, and lower rates observed on mr (radiography: 0.73 ± 0.17 vs. rm: 0.48 ± 0.14, p <0.05). however, both measurements reflect the same result: absolute cervical stenosis (torg index < 0.8). conclusions: our results confirm reports by other authors who believe that the torg index measured by radiography, as recommended, minimizes the actual cervical canal stenosis. our study suggests that mri allows better estimate of the degree of stenosis, although our results regarding the degree of cervical stenosis were statistically similar.

Abstract: this article seeks to depict the city of s?o paulo?s labour market in the period before the 1930s, sheding light on the social groups that shaped its formation and stressing its main characteristics in terms of occupational structure. it describes a situation of extreme labour instability and flexibility, which are somewhat linked to a structural and congenital excess of labour force.
