Efeitos da sele o para peso pós-desmame sobre medidas corporais e perímetro escrotal de machos Nelore de Sert ozinho (SP)

Abstract: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito indireto da sele o para peso pós-desmame sobre medidas corporais e perímetro escrotal de 809 machos Nelore, pertencentes às popula es selecionadas (NeS e NeT) e controle (NeC), da Esta o Experimental de Zootecnia de Sert ozinho. As análises estatísticas foram executadas usando-se modelos de touros, sendo que a fonte de varia o aleatória, touro, foi aninhada dentro de rebanho. Os efeitos fixos considerados foram: rebanho, ano de realiza o da Prova de Ganho de Peso (PGP), idade de vaca em anos e idade do animal em dias como covariável. A mudan a genética, obtida como a diferen a dos rebanhos selecionados em rela o ao rebanho controle, foi 40,2 e 44,3 kg, para peso aos 378 dias (P378), para os rebanhos NeS e NeT, respectivamente. As mudan as para as demais características, na mesma ordem, foram 4,5 e 4,5 cm para altura na garupa (ATPF); 6,2 e 7,0 cm para perímetro torácico (PTOR); 5,8 e 6,3 cm para comprimento do corpo (COM); 2,9 e 2,0 cm para comprimento do dorso (DOR); 1,7 e 2,4 cm para comprimento da garupa, (GAR); 1,0 e 1,3 cm para distancia de ísquios (ISQ); 1,8 e 2,6 cm para distancia de íleos (ILEO); e 1,3 e 2,2 cm para perímetro escrotal (PE). Os resultados deste estudo mostraram que a sele o direta para peso pós-desmame promoveu respostas positivas correlacionadas nas dimens es de regi es do corpo de machos Nelore.

Abstract: Os objetivos deste estudo foram estimar as tendências e os parametros genéticos e fenotípicos do peso padronizado aos 378 dias de idade (P378), medidas corporais e perímetro escrotal de machos Nelore, pertencentes às popula es selecionadas e controle da Esta o Experimental de Zootecnia de Sert ozinho. As herdabilidades, estimadas considerando-se modelo de touro e modelo animal, foram, respectivamente, 0,53±0,12 e 0,36 para P378; 0,38±0,11 e 0,58 para altura na garupa; 0,31±0,10 e 0,10 para perímetro torácico; 0,40± 0,11 e 0,13 para comprimento do corpo; 0,39±0,11 e 0,30 para comprimento do dorso; 0,33±0,10 e 0,12 para comprimento da garupa; 0,08± 0,07 e 0,14 para distancia de ísquios; 0,23±0,09 e 0,08 para distancia de íleos e 0,57±0,13 e 0,44 para perímetro escrotal. A correla o genética mais alta entre P378 e medidas corporais foi encontrada para perímetro torácico (0,86 ± 0,08); as demais variaram de 0,46 a 0,72. Os resultados deste estudo mostraram que, em fun o dos valores médios a altos das herdabilidades estimadas para P378 e da maioria das características de medidas do corpo dos animais, houve considerável varia o genética aditiva nesses atributos. Além disso, devido às altas correla es genéticas de P378 com a maioria das características, pode-se concluir ser bastante provável que grande parte dos genes que controlam o peso pós-desmame também seja responsável pelo desenvolvimento das diferentes regi es do corpo de machos Nelore. A magnitude desses parametros justifica a tendência genética positiva nas características de sele o direta e nas secundárias.
Test post-weaning duration for performance, feed intake and feed efficiency in Nellore cattle

Abstract: this study was conducted to determine optimum test duration for measuring performance, feed intake and feed efficiency. sixty young nellore bulls were submitted to feeding performance test and fed in individual pens to determine feed intake and performance over 112 days. body weight was determined every 28 days, after fasting of water and feed for 16 hours. changes in variance, relative variance and pearson and spearman correlations among data from shortened test periods (28, 56 and 84 days) and full test period (112 days) were used to determine optimum test duration. test duration for average daily gain, dry matter intake, feed:gain ratio and residual feed intake could be shortened to 84, 28, 84 and 84 days, respectively, without reducing significantly the reliability of measurements for animals fed in individual pens.
Feed efficiency of Nellore cattle selected for postweaning weight

Abstract: two nellore herds were compared, one selected for greater postweaning weight and the other, control, selected for average postweaning weight, to evaluate the effects of 29 years of selection on feed efficiency. sixty nellore males (41 selected and 19 control) averaging 205 kg and 267 days of age were evaluated in individual pens during performance test. performance and dry matter intake were used to determine the following feed efficiency traits: feed conversion; residual feed intake; residual gain; partial growth efficiency; relative growth rate and kleiber ratio. after the 112-day experimental period, control animals showed lower body weight when compared to selected animals, however, they did not differ for dry matter intake (% of body weight), rib-eye area and fat thickness at the 12th rib subcutaneous region and on the rump region. dry matter intake (kg/day) and average daily weight gain from selected animals were, respectively, 19.4% and 26.4% higher than the control ones. the highest average daily weight gain by selected animals promoted significant improvement, around 6%, on feed conversion; 70 g/day on residual gain; and 17% on kleiber rate. the other feed efficiency traits (residual feed intake, partial growth efficiency and relative growth rate) did not differ between herds. the 29-year selection for post-weaning weight did not affect feed efficiency of nellore cattle.

Abstract: the objective of this study was to evaluate the indirect effects of selection for post-weaning weight on body measures and scrotal perimeter of 809 nellore males from selected herds (nes and net) and control herd (nec), of the esta??o experimental de zootecnia de sert?ozinho. the statistical analyses were performed by using a sire mixed model where the random source of variation, sires, was nested within herds. the fixed effects were herds, year of performance test (pgp), age of cow and age of the animal as a covariate. the average genetic change for final weight, corrected for 378 days of age (w378), calculated as a deviation from the nec herd, were 40.2 and 44.3 kg for the nes and net herds, respectively. the correlated changes, for the other traits were, in the same order, 4.5 and 4.5 cm for hip height (hh); 6.2 and 7.0 cm for chest girth (cg); 5.8 and 6.3 cm for body length (bl); 2.9 and 2.0 cm for dorsal line length (dl); 1.7 and 2.4 cm for rump length (rl); 1.0 and 1.3 cm for distance between pin bones (dpb); 1.8 and 2.6 cm for distance between hip bones (dhp); and 1.3 and 2.2 cm for scrotal perimeter (sp). the results of this study showed that the direct selection for postweaning weight promoted correlated positive responses in the body dimensions and also in the scrotal perimeter of nellore males.

Abstract: linear regressions were developed to estimate the chemical empty body composition of cattle from three genetic groups (caracu, cas; selected nellore, nes; and control nellore, nec) using the physical and chemical compositions of the 9th-10th-11th rib section. fifty six intact males (20 cas, 20 nes and 16 nec) were slaughtered at 20-24 months of age. the content of water, protein, ether extract and ashes were determined in rib section and on samples obtained after grinding and homogenization of all body tissues (blood, hide, head + feet, viscera and carcass). the physical components muscle, fat and bones were also determined in the rib section. the best estimates of empty body components were obtained using the same estimator components as in rib section. the amounts of water and ether extract of the rib section accurately allowed to estimate the total water, ether extract and protein in the empty body of animals. the amounts of muscle and fat in the rib section allowed estimating with efficiency the total of water, ether extract and protein in the empty body of animals. to estimate the empty body total ashes three multiple equations were developed (one for each genetic group) with satisfactory coefficients of determination. these equations included as estimators the amounts of muscle and fat in the rib section. the physical and chemical compositions of the rib section can satisfactorily estimate the chemical components of the empty body of animals. equations described in the literature can estimate with precision the amounts of ether extract and water in the body empty of animals of this study.

Abstract: data from 44 bulls of the genetic groups selection nellore (nes), control nellore (nec) and caracu (ca) herds born in 1999 were used to evaluate the effects of selection for post weaning weight on carcass traits and meat cuts yields at 378 days of age (p 378). the animals were randomly distributed into two experimental classes: restricted feeding (ar) and ad libitum feeding (al) including 8 animals from the nes and ca groups and 6 animals from the nec group. animals of each class were slaughtered in pairs when the animals al group reached 4 mm of ultrasonic fat thickness on longissimus dorsi muscle, between the 12th and 13th ribs. the interaction between genetic group and feeding class was not significant for most of the traits evaluated. the genetic group effect was significant. animals of the ca and nes groups were heavier at slaughter and ca animals required longer feedlot period to reach the desired fat thickness. higher slaughter weights of these animals changed their carcass, hindquarter, forequarter and spare ribs weights. the selection for p 378 in the nellore group resulted in heavier weights at slaughter, heavier carcasses and primary cuts, but lower meat tenderness, although within reasonable values of shear force (below 5.0 kgf).

Abstract: data from 56 bulls of the genetic groups selection nellore (nes), control nellore (nec) and caracu (ca) herds born in 1999 were used to evaluate the effects of selection for weight at 378 days of age (p 378) on the chemical composition of empty body weight. the animals were randomly distributed to three experimental classes: initial slaughter (ai), restricted feeding (ar) and ad libitum feeding (al). the ai class included 4 animals of each genetic group and the ar and al classes included 8 animals from the nes and ca groups and 6 animals from the nec group. after the adaptation period was finished, animals of the ai class were slaughtered and those from the other classes (ar and al) started the feeding period which was defined by the time required by the animals of the al class to reach 4 mm of fat thickness. animals of the ar class of all genetic groups were also slaughtered. the selection for post-weaning weight did not promote any change on body composition of the animals. the interaction between genetic group and feeding class was not significant for most of the traits evaluated. the genetic group effect was significant. lower fat and higher protein percentages of empty body were observed in animals of the genetic group ca, probably due to their larger mature body size.

Abstract: the objectives of this study were to estimate the genetic trends and also the genetic and phenotypic parameters for body weight at 378 days (w378), body measurements and scrotal circumferences of nellore males from selected and control populations of the esta??o experimental de zootecnia de sert?ozinho (sp), brazil. the heritability estimates, considering sire and animal model were, respectively, 0.53± 0.12 and 0.36 for w378 days; 0.38±0.11 and 0.58 for hip height; 0.31±0.10 and 0.10 for chest girth; 0.40± 0.11 and 0.13 for body length; 0.39± 0.11 and 0.30 for dorsal line length; 0.33± 0.10 and 0.12 for rump length; 0.08 ± 0.07 and 0.14 for distance between pin bones; 0.23± 0.09 and 0.08 for distance between hip bones and 0.57± 0.13 and 0.44 for scrotal circumference. the highest genetic correlation between w378 and body measurements was found for chest girth (0.86 ± 0.08), and the others ranged from 0.46 to 0.72. based on the median to high heritability values found for the majority of traits, it is expected to exist a good amount of additive genetic variability controlling their variation. in addition, due to the highest correlation between w378 and most of the traits, it is probable that most part of the genes that control post-weaning weight might control the growth of different regions of animal body. the good values for the genetic correlation and heritability explain the positive genetic trends for direct and secondary traits in the selection for w378.
