Abstract: introduction: minimally invasive and video-assisted cardiac surgery (vacs) has increased in popularity over the past 15 years. the small incisions have been associated with a good aesthetic effect and less surgical trauma, therefore less postoperative pain and rapid recovery. objectives: to present our series with vacs, after 6 years of use of the method. methods: 136 patients underwent vacs, after written consent, between september 2005 and october 2011, 50% for men and age of 47.8 ± 15, 4anos, divided into two groups: with cardiopulmonary (cec) (gccec=105 patients): mitral valve disease (47/105), aortic disease (39/105), congenital heart disease (19/105) and without extracorporeal circulation (cec) (gscec=31 patients): cardiac resynchronization (18/ 31), cardiac tumor (4/31) and minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting (6/31). gccec was held in right minithoracotomy (3 to 5 cm) and femoral access to perform cannulation. results: in gccec, mean length of icu stay and hospital stay were respectively 2.4 ± 4.5 days and 5.0 ± 6.8 days. twelve patients presented complications in post-operative and five (4.8%) death. ninety-three (88.6%) patients evolved uneventful, were extubated in operating room, and remained a mean of 1.8 ± 0.9 days in icu and 3.6±1.3 days in the hospital. in gscec, were mean 1.3 ± 0.7 days in icu and 2.9 ± 1.4 days in hospital and without complications or deaths. conclusion: the results found in this series are comparable to those of world literature and confirm the method as an option the conventional technique.
Melhoramento do cafeeiro: VI - estudo e interpreta??o, para fins de sele??o, de produ??es individuais na variedade bourbon

Abstract: the present study was undertaken to get information on the following questions of primary importance in coffee breeding : a) the number of years during which individual plants must have their yields recorded, in order to select the best mother trees for progeny tests; b) the number of years of individual progeny plant records, necessary for selection of the best progenies on the basis of total progeny yield ; c) the relation between the yields of mother plants and of their progenies. an attempt to answer the above questions was made through the analysis of data furnished by the coffee department of this institute from a plot of 1107 plants (1 hectare), of coffea arabica, var. bourbon, planted in 1930 for mother tree selection and individual plant recording. these plants have now 19 consecutive years of individual yield records, and some of them have progenies with 12 to 15 years of yields available for the scope of this investigation. from the study of such a group of mother trees and of their f1 progenies, the following conclusions can be drawn, assuming that the best plants are in fact those which have the highest total yields up to the present time : a) selection of high yielding coffee mother trees is most efficient when they are already fully grown, on the basis of at least 14 years of production. selection at early ages is not so effective. b) the efficiency is approximately the same whether the selection is based on total yield after 14 years, or when it is based on the latest biennial yield, such as the 13th plus the 14th, or even when only a single high yield of a late year is considered. this conclusion was drawn from the number of plants which, belonging to the 25 and 100 best after 19 years of yield, were found among the 25 and 100 best plants at different periods of time. from the 100 plants with the highest yield after 19 years, 59 were among the 100 best plants after 12 years; 71 were among the 100 best plants after 14 years, and so on (page 183). the
Genética de Coffea XXIV - Mutantes de Coffea arabica procedemtes da Etiópia

Abstract: very little is known about the genetic variability of the species coffea arabica in its native home - the south-west of ethiopia. only more recently an increased interest is being noted with regard to the native coffee of this region and seed samples of wild, cultivated and subspontaneous coffee types have lately been gathered by various agricultural experts. several small seedling populations from ethiopia were received in campinas in 1952 and 1953. studies on genetic constitution of some of them is now being carried out. it was noted that the "eritrean moca" coffee (pi 205 413, usda) is identical to the semperflorens mutant, being homozygous for the alleles sjsj. the results of the artificial pollination with the murta variety (ttnana) revealed that from 33 analysed coffee plants from ethiopia, 23 carry the alleles it, probably in the homozygous condition. the alleles tt characterize the variety bourbon, and its presence in ethiopia indicates that this region and not the reunion island, as formerly thought, is the place of origin of this important commercial variety. the typica variety (ttnana) also occurs in ethiopia. plants of the abyssinica variety were frequently found in some of the seedling populations. although the alleles responsible for its main characters are not yet known, it was noted that abyssinica plants carry the alleles tt. other populations, segregating for abyssinica characteristics bear the alleles it. the coffee type ennarea or ennaria does not seem to belong to this variety. the genetic analysis of the color of the young leaves revealed that the allele br is frequently found in the imported plants. a new recessive allele, semierecta (se) with a phenotypic effect somewhat similar to the dominant allele erecta (er) was observed. plants with large fruits and seeds, macrocarpa, were noted but no information is available with regard to its genetic constitution. coffee seedlings with a small foliaceous and-persistent calyx were found in the populat
Genética de Coffea: IV. instabilidade do par de alelos Na-na de Coffea arabica L.
Carvalho, Alcides;
Bragantia , 1941, DOI: 10.1590/S0006-87051941000600001
Abstract: 1. the cases already mentioned by krug (4) of the somatic mutations of the na-na pair of aleles of coffea arabica l. were discussed. it is emphasized that the murta variety of this species has probably been originated from the bourbon variety by mutation of one member of the pair na-na (na-na → na-na). 2. three new cases of somatic mutations of this pair of genes are described, namely : a) a plant of the nana variety, with the main branch supposed to be of the bourbon type; the leaves are however smaller and thicker than those of the typical bourbon variety ; now the nana part is dead, living only the mutated one. b) another plant of the nana variety showing a lateral branch of the murta variety. c) a coffee-plant, also of the nana variety, which at different periods showed mutations affecting : entire branch, pairs of leaves, a single leaf, half of a leaf, or a little area of the leaf. 3. the most frequent direction of the mutation of the na-na factor is from the recessive to the dominant condition as commonly happens with other mutable genes (1, 2). 4. it seems that the na-na pair is stable in the germinal tissue, as the ratios cbtained in the progenies of murta plants are not far from the expected ones and those obtained from nana plants are all of this type. 5. it is supposed that the differences in the degree of mutability of the na-na aleles in different plants are due to modifying factors.
