Abstract: background: percutaneous coronary intervention (pci) has become one of the most commonly performed cardiac procedures in clinical practice. due to improvement in outcomes, reduced acute complication rates, the need to reduce costs and the limited availability of hospital beds, elective pci with same-day discharge has become an interesting option. methods: single-center registry with a retrospective evaluation of all patients undergoing elective pci who were discharged on the same day, from january 2009 to march 2012. the rates of major adverse cardiac events (death, myocardial infarction, target-vessel revascularization and stroke), in addition to stent thrombosis, vascular complications and re-hospitalization between hospital discharge and the first 30 days of follow-up were determined. results: sixty-nine patients were evaluated with mean age of 64.5 ± 11.2 years, most of them were male (82%), and 28% were diabetics. all patients had stable coronary artery disease and type a or b1 lesions (36% and 36% respectively). radial access was the most commonly used approach (89%), with 5 f introducer sheaths in 56% and 6 f in the remaining patients. procedure success was obtained in 98.5%. no clinical events were observed at the 30-day follow-up. conclusions: our results demonstrated that same-day discharge was safe for patients with low clinical and angiographic risk undergoing elective pci with no procedure-related complications.

Three Applications of V.3 Google Maps: Just for Display of Data, or Analysis as Well?  [PDF]
Alan G. Phipps
Journal of Geographic Information System (JGIS) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jgis.2014.65045
Abstract: A question about the analytical capability of Google maps is answered for three examples of pin maps, and polyline and polygon maps that are computer-programmed with the third version of the Google maps application. One map reads XML data stored on the home server, whereas another downloads its data from an online fusion table, and the third includes pre-programmed data. Each map permits users to query mashup layers after the map has loaded. However, an analytical capability comparable to GIS should require users to have access to their data for analysis with their own functions while the map is loading. The technical constraint of asynchronous loading of data for Google maps is illustrated for each map. In conclusion, only one map has an analytical capability that is achieved by means of deprecated synchronous loading of data.
Measuring Exterior Housing Quality in Four Older-Urban Neighbourhoods in Windsor, Ontario  [PDF]
Alan G. Phipps
Journal of Building Construction and Planning Research (JBCPR) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/jbcpr.2016.41002
Abstract: Four theoretically-deduced hypotheses about geographical and temporal variations in exterior housing quality within a neighbourhood are summarized as a renovation- or deterioration-of-self effect, a contagion-down-the-street effect, a distance-from-riverbank effect, and a distance-from core effect. These hypotheses are tested with data for the exterior conditions of hundreds of single- detached (-like) houses that have been individually surveyed twice with the same instrument in four older-urban neighbourhoods in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Each surveyed house’s rated conditions of 12 exterior attributes are in particular utilized to calculate its overall exterior quality as a percentage above or below normal. Findings are that houses’ exteriors had average “normal” weathered conditions for Canada. Even so, overall exterior housing qualities in three neighbourhoods exemplified a hypothesized deterioration-of-self effect and proximity-to-core effect, as they had especially declined from their original survey to their resurvey for houses located near to a core such as downtown or a casino. In addition, the hypothesized distance-from-riverbank effect was observed in one neighbourhood where overall exterior housing quality linearly deteriorated with farther distance from a riverbank. Finally, overall exterior housing qualities had no observable contagion-down-the-street effect, and so, residents were not reacting positively or negatively to their neighbours’ maintenance and improvement of their homes’ exteriors. The practical implications of the study’s findings are discussed in the conclusion.
Long-Lasting Effects of Undernutrition

Abstract: Undernutrition is one of the most important public health problems, affecting more than 900 million individuals around the World. It is responsible for the highest mortality rate in children and has long-lasting physiologic effects, including an increased susceptibility to fat accumulation mostly in the central region of the body, lower fat oxidation, lower resting and postprandial energy expenditure, insulin resistance in adulthood, hypertension, dyslipidaemia and a reduced capacity for manual work, among other impairments. Marked changes in the function of the autonomic nervous system have been described in undernourished experimental animals. Some of these effects seem to be epigenetic, passing on to the next generation. Undernutrition in children has been linked to poor mental development and school achievement as well as behavioural abnormalities. However, there is still a debate in the literature regarding whether some of these effects are permanent or reversible. Stunted children who had experienced catch-up growth had verbal vocabulary and quantitative test scores that did not differ from children who were not stunted. Children treated before 6 years of age in day-hospitals and who recovered in weight and height have normal body compositions, bone mineral densities and insulin production and sensitivity.

Abstract:

Work is a fundamental activity for human beings not only because it provides the benefit of a wage but also because it allows the subject to draw primitive anxieties that are evoked only in the frame of human-work relations. In Brazilian context, removed workers are often victims of prejudice beyond the organization space, triggering feelings of weakness and uselessness. The absence from work may also jeopardize both physical and mental health. Thus, this study aims to understand the psychosocial factors (social support, affect, coping skills and perception of future and health status) involved in absenteeism and the process of withdrawing work and its consequences on people’s lives. A qualitative approach was chosen for gathering and analyzing data. Four workers from different professional categories participated in this qualitative study. It was observed that stop working brought serious implications for the lives of investigated subjects, who reported feelings of estrangement, fear, emptiness, depression, helplessness and dependence. The most frequent difficulties in relation to absenteeism refer to the part of the tie break of social and financial issues. The main strategy for dealing with problems arising from job withdraws was to seek social support from friends and family. Regarding plans and the prospective, they experienced a critical period (immobilization), requiring a process of (re)adapting to the new situation ahead. Given the above, it is noteworthy to understand that the consequences of absenteeism or temporary withdrawing of labor become a necessary measure to preserve physical and mental health; a task open to interventions of work and organizational psychology.

Abstract: The present work presents the results of our studies of the family Cyperaceae in the northeastern Brazilian States of Pernambuco and Paraiba. The introduction includes a historical synopsis of previous work and summarizes the main types of vegetation found in the región. Keys for identification of the 22 genera and 127 species which comprise the catalogue are included. The species are enumerated for each genus, along with synonyms which have been employed in the región, material examined, frequency, habitat, general geographic distribution, and taxonomic observations where appropriate. More than half of the species are new records for Pernambuco and Paraiba. Two species are reported as new to science. Fuirena lainzii Luce o & M. Alves (1996) and Scleria pernambucana Luce o & M. Alves (1997). Two species are first reports from the American continent, Pycreus pumilus (L.) Nees and P. pelophilus (Ridley) C.B. Clarke, and two are first repoits for Brazil, Kyllinga nemoralis (J.R. Forster & G. Forster) Dandy ex Hutchinson & Daziel and Scleria mexicana (Liebm.) Boeck. Six genera and 10 species are new citations for the northeastem región of Brazil. A lectotype for Cyperus grossianus T.M. Ped. is chosen. Additionally, new localities are given for regional endemisms considered for be rare; other findings represent disjunctions of considerable biogeographical importance.
Measuring Exterior Safety of Canadian Residential Neighbourhoods  [PDF]

Journal of Building Construction and Planning Research (JBCPR) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jbcpr.2014.22012
Abstract: A safety audit measures the safety of 36 exterior attributes of properties and streets in a low-density residential neighbourhood in terms of four principles of modern crime prevention through environmental design, namely, territoriality, natural surveillance, activity support and access control. Eighty-three residents have walked around each of their small neighbourhoods, and audited the safeties of its area, individual private properties, and adjacent area in daylight; and the safeties of its area, properties, and exterior lighting in darkness. Findings are that older-urban neighbourhoods’ overall safety percentages and attribute safeties in daylight and darkness were consistently lower than those in newer suburban, rural or small-town ones; and frequently lower than those in newer-urban neighbourhoods, or older suburban, rural or small-town ones. Recommendations are about improving 12 less safe or unsafe attributes by means of physical planning and environmental design. Also having identified those attributes, we speculate about replicating the safety audit via online Street Views of existing Canadian neighbourhoods.
