Horticultura Brasileira , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-05362011000300013
Abstract: we verified the relation among the evaluated characters in field and greenhouse, concerning to the evaluation to root-knot nematode (meloidogyne spp.) for the carrot crop, to identify for which ones it is possible to differentiate among genotypes and to verify the possibility of evaluation only in one environment or the elimination of characters with high correlation. thirty eight and thirty one families from the carrot populations '0812518' and '0812519', and the cultivars brasília and kuronan as tolerant and susceptible standards, respectively, were evaluated. in a field whose soil was naturally infected by a mix of meloidogyne incognita race 1 and meloidogyne javanica, the selection to resistance to root-knot nematode was based on lower percentage of infection in the root, of the major genotypes of carrot production in t/ha and reproduction factor; and in greenhouse, to each one of the same nematode species and too for a mix of both, was evaluated the index of gall and index of egg mass. there is no possibility of selection in only one condition or the elimination of some characters, indicating that, to obtain more yielding and more tolerant cultivars, the combined selection in the various characters and environments are necessary. in the field experiment, it was only possible to differentiate the genotypes for root yield. in the greenhouse, it was possible to identify superior genotypes for all characters tested. however, the average population was not better than the 'brasilia' standard that originated these populations. this result confirms the necessity to search for more efficient methods of selection.

Abstract: the variety group 'brasília' is still largely cultivated during the summer season in brazil. these open pollinated cultivars are adapted to warm climates/regions and they present field resistance to the leaf blight disease complex and to root-knot nematodes (genus meloidogyne), which are the two major biotic problems in tropical and subtropical regions. however, some cultivars of the 'brasília' group have important genetic disorders with negative impacts on the visual, sensorial, and nutritional quality of the roots. 'brs planalto' is a new open pollinated cultivar released by the embrapa vegetable crops breeding program, aiming to minimize much of these problems. 'brs planalto' was developed after 18 cycles of recurrent selection based upon the performance of half-sib progenies using the cultivar brasília as the basic germplasm. evaluations were carried out in each selection cycle for a set of phenotypic traits using two replications (1 m2 plots) with about 100 roots per plot of each half-sib family. 'brs planalto' has a darker orange root color when compared to 'brasília' due to the higher accumulation of the carotenoid pigments α-carotene and β-carotene (vitamin a precursors). in addition, 'brs planalto' displays uniform xylem and phloem color and low incidence of precocious bolting during the warm season. 'brs planalto' has lower green and purple root shoulder incidences as well as lower frequency of white halo in the root tissue when compared to 'brasília'. 'brs planalto' has also a more uniform root pattern (shape and size) when compared to other cultivars of the 'brasília' group. 'brs planalto' is adapted to both conventional and organic crop systems and presents a very high yield potential. therefore, 'brs planalto' might occupy a strategic role in the brazilian carrot agribusiness chain due to its improved visual and nutritional root qualities when compared to other cultivars of the 'brasília' variety group.

Socio-economic and Institutional Factors Influencing Farmers’ Perception of Privatization of Agricultural Extension Services in Kaduna State Nigeria
DE Yusuf, DF Omokore, MW Musa
Journal of Agricultural Extension , 2011,
Abstract: This study was determined farmers’ perception of privatization of agricultural extension services in Kaduna state. Socio-economic characteristics of farmers and the institutional factors influencing farmers’ perception towards the privatization of agricultural extension services were investigated. Two out of the four KADP zones were used for the study. A total of 80 constituted the sample size for the study. Descriptive (frequency and percentage) and Inferential (Tobit regression) statistical techniques were used for data analysis. The findings revealed that education (X2) and farmers’ awareness of extension privatization (X10) were positively significant to perception while age (X1), membership of cooperative (X8) and quality of extension service delivery (X9) were negatively significant to farmers’ perception of extension privatization to farmers. This finding suggests that farmers should be properly sensitized and well educated on issues concerning Extension privatization. This will actually expose them to know what privatization entails, including the benefits and advantages they can derive from the privatized extension practice.
Tecnologia e humaniza??o em ambientes intensivos

Revista de Administra??o Pública , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/s0034-76122010000600005
Abstract: Este artigo analisa as possíveis formas de discrimina o no local de trabalho direcionadas a funcionários homossexuais masculinos de bancos públicos e privados. This article analyzes the possible forms of discrimination against gay employees of public and private banks. Initially we discuss the basic concepts related to studies on discrimination in general and the relationship of these concepts with the discrimination of homosexuals. In regard to the type of research methodology is qualitative, using a script of semi-structured interview for data collection. We interviewed ten works, employees of two federal public banks and a private bank with capital entirely national. For the analysis of data was used the analysis of discourse developed by Michel Foucault. It is concluded that the respondents are targets of direct and indirect discrimination on grounds of their sexuality. Discrimination manifests itself directly in the deficiency of normative public banks studied to ensure and clarify the real rights of workers who have homosexual marriages homoafetivos as well as the complete lack of rules that establish rights for homosexuals in private bank. However, the question that most interviewees are uncomfortable is the indirect discrimination expressed in the workplace.

Abstract: This research presents the psychometric properties and indicators of factorial validity related to the Brazilian version of love styles scale - LAS. The purpose of this measure is to evaluate six cognitive dimensions of romantic love, according to the theory proposed by John Lee: Eros, Storge, Ludus, Mania, Pragma and Agape. Five hundred and nine people of both sexes took part on the study, 222 of whom were men (43,6%) and 287 were women (56,4%). Mean participant age was 27,9 years old (SD = 9,6) for the male group and 26,4 years (SD = 8,5) for the female group. Participants answered to an online version of the original 42-item Likert scale that had been translated to Portuguese. Exploratory factor analysis results demonstrated consistency on the scale’s six dimension structure, and independence among the resulting factors. Scales’ Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient ranged from 0,55 to 0,81, indicating the viability to use that measure.
Sewage input effects on the macroinvertebrate community associated to Typha domingensis Pers in a coastal lagoon in southeastern Brazil

Brazilian Journal of Biology , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1519-69842007000100010
Abstract: this study was carried out at imboassica lagoon, located in an urban zone in the municipality of macaé, rio de janeiro state, brazil. this lagoon has been subject to anthropogenic impacts due to the increasing city population, such as the input of sewage. areas of variable degree of anthropogenic influence in the lagoon were compared regarding the structure of the macroinvertebrate community associated to typha domingensis leaves. for sampling, we used 35 x 20 cm net plastic bags, with 6.8 mm mesh containing t. domingensis leaves for colonization. two different sampling stations were selected: station a, under direct input of sewage; and station b with lesser sewage influence. the bags were removed after 20, 40 and 75 days of colonization. for each sample the shannon-wiever diversity, pielou evenness, jaccard similarity indices, correspondence analysis and taxonomic richness were calculated. a total of 31,874 individuals were sampled, belonging to 34 taxa. the main taxonomical groups were: oligochaeta (41%), chironomidae (40%), ancylidae (4.6%), polymitarcyidae (4%) and thiaridae (3%). at station a, the taxonomic richness, the evenness and diversity values were lower than in station b. on the other hand, the total density was three times higher in station a than in b. it was already possible to discriminate the community structure of each sampling station in the first sampling. trichoptera and ephemeroptera were the main exclusive groups of station b and are considered good water quality indicators due to their high sensibility to contamination. the major contribution to discriminate between the macroinvertebrate communities of the two sample stations came from chironomidae, oligochaeta and ephemeroptera.
