Influence of Residual Basal Area on Longleaf Pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) First Year Germination and Establishment under Selection Silviculture  [PDF]
Ferhat Kara, Edward F. Loewenstein
Open Journal of Forestry (OJF) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ojf.2015.51002
Abstract: Even-aged silvicultural methods have been successfully used to manage longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) forests for wood production; however, successful use of uneven-aged methods to manage this ecosystem is less well documented. In this study, the effects of varying levels of residual basal area (RBA) (9.2, 13.8, and 18.4 m2·ha-1) on longleaf pine germination and establishment under selection silviculture marked using the Proportional-B method were observed. In addition to RBA, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was measured, and the relationships between light penetration, germination, and growth were examined. The study found an inverse relationship between RBA and the number of germinants, but the mortality of germinants was not influenced by RBA. PAR also had a significant positive effect on germination, but, did not affect mortality of germinants. In addition, RBA and PAR had no effect on mortality or growth of planted seedlings. Continued monitoring of seedling recruitment into the stand will be required to determine the efficacy of the system. However, nothing in the first year data suggests that this approach will not be successful in sustaining an uneven-aged stand.
Exploring the Implementation of Individual Care Plans in Relation to Characteristics of Staff  [PDF]
Anna Condelius, Ulf Jakobsson, Staffan Karlsson
Open Journal of Nursing (OJN) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ojn.2016.68062
Abstract: The aim was to explore the implementation of individual care plans in municipal elderly care in relation to characteristics of staff. Data regarding characteristics of staff were derived through a questionnaire distributed to all staff working in the care for older people, (N = 908, n = 245) in four municipalities in Sweden. The number of care plans established during a one-year period was collected through a contact person in each municipality. In total 47 individual care plans were established during the study year. Significantly more staff in the municipality that had the most number of established individual care plans agreed that there had been sufficient education (p = 0.017), sufficient time (p = 0.002) and routines established regarding individual care plans (p = 0.014) and had a significantly better job satisfaction (p = 0.001), compared to staff in the other municipalities. Implementation leaders may need to take the working conditions and the perception of available resources among staff into consideration in the on-going process of implementing individual care plans.
General Practitioners, Patients, and Care Givers Support the Use of a Telegeriatric Memory Disorder Consultation for Older Adults  [PDF]
Melinda Martin-Khan, Salih A. Salih, Jeffrey Rowland, Richard Wootton, Leonard C. Gray
Advances in Alzheimer's Disease (AAD) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/aad.2015.41001
Abstract: Evidence has shown that diagnosis of dementia is reliable via video conference, but uptake of telehealth in this field has been slow. The aim of this paper was to consider the feasibility of implementing a telegeriatric memory disorder consultation as a standard clinical service and to assess stakeholder satisfaction with such a service. Method: The focus was on patient population located some distance from access to specialist services. General Practitioners (GPs) located in a remote area referred patients for a video consultation (VC) for cognitive assessment. A satisfaction survey was completed by referring GPs, patients or care givers, and the geriatrician. Results: Seven GPs agreed to participate in the pilot. Nine patients were referred for assessment, eight were diagnosed with dementia. GPs identified the specialist input as significant to patient care. Participants interacted with the specialist on a level that was comparable to a face-to-face assessment. Conclusion: It was clinically feasible to implement a telegeriatric memory disorder clinic. GPs, patients and their families living in a remote area found that a telegeriatric memory consultation was a highly satisfactory alternative to traveling to a major city for a memory assessment. Key Points: 1) GPs judged the diagnosis and recommendations by the specialist to be reliable and would recommend the service; 2) Rather than travel a long distance to see a specialist, attending the appointment via video conference is a suitable alternative for geriatric cognitive assessment.

Abstract: a descriptive and cross-sectional study including 62 families where old patients live was conducted at "luis augusto turcios lima" outpatient clinic from january to june 2010 aimed at identifying some characteristics of familial environment. the houses of these families were visited in order to collect the data related to familial structure, number of family members and the elderly were taken applying a test of familial perception ff-sil. measures to sum up were calculated to achieve the qualitative data (absolute frequencies and percentages). the elderly living with extended families of 4 and 6 members and 2 old people in the group of families prevailed. the greatest number of old people considered family role was satisfactory in their homes.

Abstract: a descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out with the elderly of "hermanos barcon" popular council, from january to june 2011 aimed at determining the behavior of their disabilities. the target group included 2011 old people and the sample 200. the survey for the disability risk factor was applied. results were analyzed by means of rate calculation, absolute frequencies and percentages. physical disabilities are close related to the sequelae of hip fractures, whereas low educational levels and lost of social role were the psychosocial variables most associated with this disability. mental disabilities, female sex, low school degrees and unemployment prevailed in advanced ages.

Revista Cubana de Medicina General Integral , 1998,
Abstract: a retrospective, longitudinal and descriptive study was conducted to determine the behavior of family apgar among noninstitutionalized, living together aged patients who had no alternations of the cognitive sphere and who received medical attention at two family physician?s offices located in the rural community of the teaching polyclinic of san cristóbal, during 1995, 70 elderly patients were surveyed and the results were statistically processed using the chi square method by a computerized system. every value associated to a probability under 0.05 was considered as significant. the perception of family functionability in the elderly from nucleated families was statistically remarkable. there was a very important correspondence between the evaluation of functionability granted by the elderly to his family and that one detected by the researcher. no statiscally significant relationship was observed between family apgar and the age of these patients, or be tween their present work activity and the behavior of the functions assigned and assumed by them
